Frail fights backs against critics of his time as Hearts boss

STEPHEN FRAIL has mounted an impassioned defence of his Hearts tenure in the wake of criticism from supporters, rejecting out of hand suggestions that he had lost respect within the dressing-room.
Unsure of Vladimir Romanov's plans for him this summer, Frail spoke to the Evening News stressing his desire to remain at Tynecastle in some capacity. His contract expires in a matter of weeks and Romanov has yet to announce details of the club's man
agement structure for next season.

The former full-back will continue as interim manager until told otherwise, a role he insists has not damaged his credibility. Hearts finished their bottom-six fixtures with defeat to Gretna on Tuesday night but Frail maintains that results between January and the SPL split prove he had the squad's respect.

In a candid interview, he explained his willingness to co-operate with foreign players who were allowed to return home before the season had ended. Frail said he did everything in his power to help the team despite being personally chastised by a section of the support.

"I had to try and manage the situation as best I can. I tried to get results," he stated. "The discipline is always a problem. People say the players didn't respect me, I know they did because I got results. Whether or not that keeps me in a job, I don't know. I do know that, whatever happens, I can hold my head up high. I can assure all the Hearts fans that I worked my backside off 24-7 to try and make a success of it.

"Of course I want to stay, I'm not sure how many other people want that now when I listen to the fans. But I know what job I've done with the group of players we had. We went from second bottom to within touching distance of the top six, losing our top goalscorer (Andrius Velicka) in that period. I've said often that our results between January and the split would have had us in third."

Frail adhered to the personal wishes of certain players by letting them begin their summer break earlier than others. He dismissed the notion that his decisions had fostered any ill-feeling amongst those who stayed.

"Of the foreign lads, I've come and gone with all of them. They've all had an extra day here or there depending on circumstances so there shouldn't be any resentment. I tried to manage each case differently and one or two went home early. Fernando Screpis played on Tuesday night and left on Wednesday morning, because he has a long flight to Argentina.

"Christos Karipidis also went early and Miko's wife was due their baby so that's why he went back to Lithuania last week. The rest of the guys who were fit were all training on Wednesday and then were given their fitness programmes for the summer before saying goodbye to one another."

Neil McCann and Ibrahim Tall have left Tynecastle for the final time. McCann has joined Falkirk on a two-year contract while Tall is now back in France seeking a new club after his contract expired.

Speaking about his move, McCann said: "The organisation and ethic of what John (Hughes, manager), Brian (Rice, assistant) and George (Craig, managing director) are trying to do to take Falkirk places is exactly why I took the step to be here."

why let a good defender like tall leave for free when we were being offered money for him last season? whenever i've seen him he's been good (a damned sight better than zaliukas) yet we're quite happy to let him fester away picking up a hefty wage packet and then canter across to france to find a new club at the end of his contract?

bizarre. mind you, i wouldn't expect any logic from proceedings at tynecastle, that would be naive wouldn't it??

Shaggy, it isn't about working hard, or doing your best.
I am certain you did both, but that isn't enough. If it were I could do your job.
I watched every home game this past season and a few away games.
WE WERE DIRE, apart from the odd blip.
During your period of "full" autonomy" I watched some of the most abysmall performances from a Hearts team.
If you are kept on as a youth coach that's fine, but if it were down to me, I would clean out the whole coaching set up, including that eegit, Korobotchup.
We need a guy to come in with his "team" and begin the re-building that is so desperately required.
Thanks for doing your best Shaggy...Adios Amigo!

I would jump at the chance to join falkirk too as how many other clubs are organised so well that they can even lay claim to having a rice assistant?

I mean I know diet is important but to have a role in the coaching staff dedicated to making sure the players have the right type of rice to eat is admirable.

Whoever this Brian guy is i think we should sign him... He could perhaps get big Nade on a rice diet and therefore have him moving like a guy in his early to mid twenties rather than a diseased carthorse one milk round off the glue factory.

Good luck Terry.

Frail you are missing the point mate we don't have a problem with you as a person, just stop trying to claim you have responsibility over team selection.l

I await my call from Tynecastle to enquire when I will be renewing my season ticket which I have had since the Wheatfield was built and the terracing before that.

NEW MANAGER REQUIRED URGENTLY

and a fecking clear-out of all the deadwood and there is plenty there.

I have no doubt that Stevie Frail, or should that be shaggy, gave it his all. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough and while I agree on some of his points, he is not the man to take Hearts up to 3rd or better.

If Romanov is serious, and wants my £420 odd quid he'd better show the same enthusiasm and sign CRAIG LEVEIN or someone of a similar ilk as a matter of urgency.

If not, I will decide when and what games I go to watch. You don't display your enthusiasm and neither will I. I will keep the cash and put you Mr Romanov on a performance related scheme. I pay you when I see quality.

Tall and McCann to leave - well that's more deadwood gone! Hopefully the page can now be turned and if enough new blood and energy can be put into the club then I think we might have something to look forward to in the next few seasons!

Frail has done his best, but we need a proper manager with full control over first team selection!

We should be thanking him.

Frail, you seem a pleasant guy, but your own words and actions show you dont understand what you are doing. An effective manager can assess a situation, tell you what is going wrong, tell you what he is going to do about it, make the necessary changes, then get the expected results. I'm sorry, you're fired.

I agree but he is not the man to take us forward now and the only reason he appears to be taking the flak is because that is what suits Vlad.

Still no word on a new manager and statements from Roman about backing 'our' man all seem to point to his imminent apointment as head coach.

I am also frustrated at the continued involvment of Ivaskevicius... Either Frail honestly thinks this guy is good enough to play for Hearts or he is being told to play him because of his nationality... Would you be happy with frail getting the job if it is either of these two scenarios?

Also the way he bigged up Piliabits and Beniusis when they were playing in the reserves, saying that they were awesome and then putting them in ahead of good players?

Either way he is either a terrible judge of player or he is taking orders from Vlad as to who plays.

BOTH SCENARIOS ARE UNACCEPTABLE!

It would have been very easy for him to have bailed by now (much like those who come on here to announce that they "urnae goin' back"), and who would have blamed him? But he didn't and his loyalty should be acknowledged.

Great idea with the PRP. Through family/friends/work I'd say I know about 30 Jambo ST holders and its split 50/50 on those that tell me they're going to/won't renew.

I too want to see the back of Romanov because I care about there being a Hearts FC in a few years.

I watched a live Liverpool game a few weeks ago and the commentators couldn't help drawing attention to the chants of the fans and their banners protesting at the clubs owners. I'd suggest that a live game is the best time for a protestest inside the ground. This will hopefully dent VRs precious pride/ego no end and prompt him to get the finger out.

Good luck son.

#30, #37...

It's a fine idea if I may say so myself. Where else do you give a considerable amount of money for a service before knowing the quality of that service. Okay, prostitution is one but at least you have an idea of the quality of the experience based on whether she is a fattie or not :o)

I have always paid up front (to Hearts, not some Hobo prozzie) and after the last year I am embarrassed to admit enough is enough. Velicka was the last straw for me...there we are, pushing for top 6, maybe even 3rd place and Romanov sells our top (and fecking ONLY) striker.

After upgrading me from Gold to Platinum in Wheatfield F, that's F for how in f*ck's name is stand F a premium seat and then wasting hours of my undoubtedly limited time on this earth watching sh1te he can sook on my alcohol soaked liver for the 400 odd quid this year.

I, yes, I will decide when I go and what games I go to watch based on the quality of the performance...

To be honest, I really doubt I will be short on a choice of tickets around old seat.

Frail has surely had his time, his teams are defensive, negative, have no spark or freedom to try and play attractive attacking football - all very depressing.

Gone - McCann, Tall

To go - Goncalves, Ivaskevikius, Zaliukas, Elliot, Stewart, Aguiar, Nade, Chesney, Miko

That would provide some gaps in the squad that could be filled by a manager who was given complete control over team affairs.

Guaranteed. Prospective manager's are not (for the most part) stupid. It is very clear Romanov continued to have "influence" on the playing squad after Frail claimed to have autonomy.

If not Frail, my money is on another Lithuanian yes man. As for signings, I expect a handful of second-rate eastern European's.

If Hearts had ANY drive or passion to succeed in the last 12-18 months we would have tried to sign Naismith, Boyd, Robson, etc.

#74 Frail stated himself that Romanov insisted he played 3 players in certain games
If that not influencing team selection dont know what is

"Unsure of Vladimir Romanov's plans for him this summer, Frail spoke..."
What sort of a way of life is that for a grown man?

It seems obvious that he is still there only because it suits Romanov that someone is there to take the flak. If he does manage to 'buy' a manager with a real background, Frail will be disposed of very quickly.

Should be doing it now actually.....

You Jambos are so lucky, what with McGhee a done deal and the 6 - 8 Million he will get to spend on players. No doubt you will get a few world cup players. You must be feeling so optomistic at the moment.

Rolland, I think if Vlad told you he was signing Chuck Norris you would believe him! Guilable? Na, not at all!!!

Charlie Mann?

I've heard hundreds of rumours coming from hearts in the last 3 years - all of them 'definite' and ending with the phrase "watch this space". I have listed below all the ones that came to fruition.

GrahamL,

I tell you what guys, I can't wait to get McGhee in. I'd like him to spend his £6m on the following players:
Cech, Riise, Micah Richards, Ronaldinho, Christiano Ronaldo, Henry
I think they'd fill in the gaps in the squad nicely. And I've heard rumours about them all looking to move in the summer. So it could happen!!!
84

Rolland,

16/05/2008 14:58:56
#83 - Ha ha very good I like that one.

Lenny - Really don't think we will get any world cup stars this yearay, might get one of the European Championships though :-)

With a new manager in place Hearts will regain there rightful p[lace as the third force and might even push an aging old firm again, not saying we can split them but we'll be in with a shout. So you hobo's enjoy your "we own the capital" because its only on loan (so your not debt free just yet).

#84 Can't do otherwise the leith mob would have had him in on trial as they scrap the barrel for a player here and there.

If you are trying to diss Chuck, he will find you. He will hunt you down and force you to watch every single Hearts game from this season. A bit over the top I know, but thats Chuck Norris for you!

But they will get injured or suspended over the course of a season so the three need to be kept ticking over.

Now I may be wrong, but Im pretty sure that Donaldson has scored more goals this season than any Hearts player. (Not the one you sold). Ready to stand corrected if wrong.

p.s I agree that Donaldson is murder, which kind of shows the standard of player Hearts have up front.

The best one I heard was Chic Young desperately trying to tell us on Sportsound that he saw it all and it was the same small group of English fans desperately scrambling around from place to place starting a riot in order to make it look like it was more people (I use the term loosly) than it was... Pathetic little appologist scum bag that he is!
