Hearts 1 - 2 Kilmarnock: Late Bryson goal ends Jambos' home winning streak

Published Date: 04 October 2008
A LATE strike by Kilmarnock's Craig Bryson consigned Hearts to defeat and ended their 100 per cent home record this season on an afternoon when striking deficiencies were again in evidence for Csaba Laszlo's side.

Bereft of creativity, the hosts suffered in the final third and were outdone by a lively Ayrshire side despite dominating long periods of the second half.

Mehdi Taouil opened the scoring with a sublime first-half free-kick before Larry Kingston produced a controlled equaliser prior to the interval. Hearts controlled the play thereafter but could not convert heavy ball possession into goals and sustained a suckerpunch nine minutes from time through Bryson.

Perhaps one positive for the hosts was the display of home debutant Mike Tullberg. The Dane started for the first time since joining on loan from the Italian club Reggina and looked brimming with endeavour and physical strength. He was heavily involved during the opening stages, which were openly contested by two attack-minded sides.

It required a set-piece on 19 minutes to ignite proceedings as Jamie Mole suffered for his loose pass in midfield, which preceded a trip on Kilmarnock's Bryson. After the striker's wayward ball in behind Michael Stewart, the visitors assumed possession and, striving to redeem himself, Mole tracked back to impede the advancing Bryson on the edge of Hearts' penalty area and was cautioned. Taouil expertly curled the free-kick away from Marian Kello into the top left corner of the goal.

As natives got restless Mole became the focal point of their anger, although the Kilmarnock captain Manuel Pascali did plenty to incur criticism with some quite brutal tackles in midfield.

Home supporters settled in their seats again when Kingston levelled on 34 minutes. Tullberg, from the left flank, played an intelligent reverse pass to Michael Stewart but his left-footed strike careered off Simon Ford to Kingston. The Ghanaian calmly slotted the ball low to Alan Combe's right from 20 yards and looked thoroughly relieved at doing so.

The Hearts defence continued to look less than convincing whenever Kilmarnock ventured forward, an issue which ought to have featured in Laszlo's interval address. The Hungarian must have recognised that his side required to assert themselves more but that they appeared somewhat inhibited during the opening 45 minutes was down to Kilmarnock's pressing game.

A flowing forward move saw Jason Thomson cross for Kingston, however the ambitious first-time finish was high and did not trouble Combe.

Thereafter Hearts began to dominate with Tullberg replaced by Christian Nade as overhead conditions neared monsoon proportions.

With 15 minutes remaining, this match was teetering on a knife-edge. The hosts fashioned a useful opening when Saulius Mikoliunas' though pass put Kingston face-to-face with Combe on 77 minutes, but the visiting goalkeeper's impressive reflexes saw him smother the shot.

Hearts continued attacking with the ever-animated Laszlo urging them forward from his technical area. However, Kilmarnock produced a stinging winner with nine minutes remaining.

A high ball out of defence was gathered by Bryson and, following a tidy interchange with substitute Donovan Simmonds, the midfielder stroked the ball past Kello with his left foot. With that, home shouldered dropped as a second half into which they threw everything neared its conclusion.

Audrius Ksanavicius' cross saw Kingston nod the ball over Combe's crossbar during the final moments, while Kello was down sharply to his right to repel Kilmarnock substitute Gavin Skelton's controlled shot.

But, ultimately, Bryson's strike was sufficient to secure Jim Jefferies a priceless victory and end Hearts' impressive home sequence in the process.

Hearts (4-4-1-1): Kello; Thomson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Kingston, Karipidis, Stewart, Mikoliunas; Mole; Tullberg. Subs: Balogh, Palazuelos, Aguiar, Ksanavicius 55 (for Mole), Nade 63 (for Tullberg), Makela 88 (for Mikoliunas), Rapnik.

Kilmarnock (4-4-2): Combe; Lilley, Ford, Wright, Hamill; Invincibile, Pascali, Bryson, Taouil; Sammon, Fernandez. Subs: Rascle, Murray, Gibson, Skelton 87 (for Taouil), Flannigan, Cox, Simmonds 70 (for Sammon).

Referee: Craig Thomson.

Attendance: 13,189.

why is Laszlo continuing to use such players as Ksanavicius & mole when we have better players on the bench like Palazuelos and Nade? I know Nade is not ideal but i still think he's better than Mole

GOA-JAMBO,

Back Hame 04/10/2008 17:41:02
The complete lack of effort from this Hearts team is a bigger concern than to-days result, I have witnessed all but one game this saeson and we have no quality in the team, players like Wallace, Mole, Nade, Ksanavicius, should not be playing for our club, we need honest home grown players who are willing to fight for a place in the team, that is not what happens at Tynecastle week after week we see the same players consistantly being picked even though they are not good enough to wear the maroon, Csaba if you are a football manager then questions are now being aked about your ability to pick a football team.

PS Has anyone got Mark Mcgee phone number.

Good points

Wallace played better
Kingston was the best he has been for a year

Bad Points

Laszlo made a totally stupid decision in reverting from a 4 4 2 to a 4 4 1 1 when at home to Killie and supposed to be trying to win the game. Bringing on Ksanevicius the midget was a master stroke of idiocy. This bloke should not even get in the squad never mind the team.

Our twin centre halfs should hang their heads in shame at the winner - Not for the first time do they look like they do NOT have an understanding.

You carry the can for this one mister manager - another example - Miko should have been subbed with half an hour left as he was wasting his time out there today.Total waste of space - though being played out of position.Subbed with three minutes left - do me a favour.

A draw was the appropriate result today - Killie were not worthy of a win and neither were we , simple as that.

Intellectually stimulating post as ever.......

Poor performance from Hearts. Killie just closed us down continually and forced us to hit it long. Kingstons chance was a sitter and would have put us (undeservedly) 2-1 up. That was kinda the difference the day. We had a good chance....and missed. Killie had a good chance and tucked it away.

Ksanavicius shouldn't be playing and Ruben should be in front of the defence (until Bruno is back to form). Karapidis is a good defender IMO but he simply isn't creative enough. Need Driver back pretty quickly to inject a bit of pace into the game. The Hearts fans who booed Mole 15 minutes in are a disgrace. How on earth is that going to help? Save the boos till the end.
Pass marks to Berra, Wallace, Kingston (just) and maybe Tullberg who just didn't see enough of the ball today.

Cracks starting to show with CSABA. Miko/Kari/Stewart/Mole were all less than 5/10's. Kingston carried the midfield & was by a mile our best player. CSABA should have replaced Kari/Miko & Mole with Palaz/aguier & Nade and we would have won the game. Kvasanv... should not get near the team then he adds insult too injury by bringing on Mackela... a farce,i saw him for reserves mid week and he was not good enough at that level.
Kello done well/other than 2ng goal thought defence was OK with Wallace playing better.

Was driving back feeling suicidal until a MORTON fan phoned Jim Traynor ;made me feel guilty feeling bad about the HEARTS

Always on the cards again with the predictable formation and players. Thought he was going to mix up the tactics and i actualy want the rotation policy back as some of them aren't doing the business. Lots to think about for Csaba before the visit to the smug middeners, who now think they are world beaters and flairmysters supreme after a win against a sheep side who are screaming for Calderwoods head. Will be a more determined Hearts hopefuly for that game and the players will surely be given the riot act now the honeymoon period is drawing thinner.

#37 We don't think we're world beaters and flair football is a distant memory. However, we got 3 points away from home with a stuffy performance and despite the best efforts of the 2nd worst referee in Scotland. That is something to be pleased with. Now we can all look forward to the derby rather than dread it. Do you think many of the Hearts players will have been saving themselves to put one over on their local rivals or are they really that bad? I know the Scottish guys will be up for it, but what about your foreign contingent?

In the end, its the 3 points that counts and they weren't up for what should have been a home victory today. It does not bode well. So many misplaced passes and a distinct lack of urgency. Only Kingston and Berra passed muster IMO. The time it took to sub Miko was unbelievable. And many accurate observations have already been made about the contributions of the subs.

And what about Stewart having a wee jumpy-tantrum every time something didn't work out? What is that about?

I'll quote

Bereft of creativity, the hosts suffered in the final third and were outdone by a lively Ayrshire side despite dominating long periods of the second half.

I've spoken to two of my (outcast) JT mates who agree with this. They also agree with the point that i Made last week - that Shabba was very committed. Sadly they also agreed that he was befreft of ideas.

40 Yeah would say you have to be favourites for the derby as the problem for us has been away up until today but scoring is a big problem in nearly every game so far. Something hibs are starting to do since riordans return.
Just wish Csaba would play Glen as he has got to be worth a spot alongside Tullberg and i'm confident the goals will come with an understanding that strikers in a front two if good enough would develop.

That was utter mince today!
Audrey should never wear a hearts top again! His last few games have been awful, so why give the guy another shot?! He is too slow, too small, and for some stupid reason still play the high ball to him which he hasn't a hope in winning!
Kari should be back playing beside Berra and Ruben back in midfield!
Kingston had a better game today...just! I would drop him til he got of his ego cloud!
I wouldn't be too hard on Wallace, his confidence has taken a bashing as had admitted to the papers.
Jamie Mole doesn't deserve the booing he recieved from some idiots! We will just ruin that young lad if we continue!
Shaba....well i think the honeymoon period is over now but it is still obvious the shots are still getting called from Vlads office! Please keep to the 4 4 2 system and give young Glen a wee run!!
And finally, i kind of agree with muslim jambo (if he is a jambo) that i wish we could sing 'Hello hello' again but leave the orange bile out! I just feel that used to get the crowd and the team going! And just before anyone starts calling me a bigot....i am a catholic Hearts fan!

Quote from Lazslo,

"I am disappointed and angry but I won't criticise my team. At the moment I must protect my team."

What a load of bull!

Csaba, you ain't got it man, just leave now with at least some dignity.

Csaba has seen us lose 2 games in a row - SACK HIM NOW.

Aye right - get real, its only two games ffs. Get off your high horses and get behind the team. All this 'not good enough' comments - who do you all think you all are? Alan Hanson? Get real and get behind the team.

#93 - The fans ARE behind the team, Addie.

But surely you agree there are serious question marks over Laszlo's management skills?

Laszlo was also quoted yesterday as saying "We need to give something back..." and he's correct.

The players need to "get behind the fans", too. The performances and results have been dire.

Hearts fans deserve better and in my view are quite right to express their dissatisfaction.

Th club is a complete shambles and not one of these players deserves to pull on the famous jersey!! As for Romanov and al his puppets then is this not the time to act against this lot before it's too late?!

Csaba can only do the best with the talent he has available. And lets face it, there is not much is there? However, I cant help but feel he is being influenced from somewhere - I don't think the Fax machine is working in full effect, but there is pressure being applied from somewhere in the background - at the end of the day, we are mince at the moment, and until we play 4-4-2 and keep the ball on the ground (and mole on the bench), we will remain mince - still - could be worse, could be a peg seller!!

#94 Csaba is an unorthodox manager, granted his tactics are peculuar to say the least. I rised an eyebrow when he played Kari in midfiled and Eggy at Right back. I also wondered why we are playing with only one up front. That said, Eggy and Kari have played well in their respeted new positions (generally speaking). I believe Glen should be up front with Mole or Nade as far a Strikers go.

However this, 'Hearts fans deserve better' routine - why? What makes us better than the Dundee Utds and Aberdeens of this league? We are on a par with the rest of SPL and thats the harsh reality of this. If you went to Tynie yesterday expecting a win, then of course you will be disappointed, but we all need to wake up - we are not the side that won the Scottish cup and had the backbone of the National Side in the starting line up. It pains me to write this, but we need to stop thinking we are some massive club in Scotland right now and get back to 'grass routes' and encourage the team, not boo off a young kid (Mole) who is asked to do a mans job and has a dip in confidence.

#97 - I say "Hearts fans deserve better" because I think Romanov's lack of interest and mismanagement are both embarrassing and offensive.

I think too, that some of the players' performances of late have short-changed the fans.

I also happen to believe that HMFC - no matter what state we are in right now - has the potential to challenge the Old Firm.

I think we need to have that ambition and not allow ourselves to be burdened with past failures or imagine that our current state is how it's supposed to be.

But HMFC needs an owner who shares that vision and ambition and who is willing to bankroll the project. Romanov is not that man and in my view should now be looking to sell the club.

I'm realistic enough to know that perhaps such a person or group doesn't exist, but I'll keep on hoping they do for the moment.

I do understand what you've said about the current limitations. I just don't accept that it has to be this way.

I have watched hearts for 60 years now and that exhibition on saturday must go down as one of the worst ever. None of the players would have got a game for the reserves in the 50,s & 60,s There is no leadership on the park, the midfield is nonexistant and the forwards are absolutely useless and a manager that does not have a clue. That team is heading for the bottom six if not relegation.

99 - I can tell you what kind of bus you used last night- one with six wheels, seats and an engine.

Just a pity you didn't walk over the edge of the cliffs at Berwick Hoilday Centre while you were there.
