Hearts put their faith in Pinilla with new contract

Published Date: 07 May 2008
HEARTS striker Mauricio Pinilla has signed a new three-year contract with the club after a deal was struck to buy the Chilean outright from Inter Milan.
Despite admitting recently he was itching for a return to his homeland so he could be closer to his two-year old daughter Agustina, the internationalist has performed a U-turn and is now desperate to kick-start his Tynecastle career.

The 24-year-o
ld, who is currently recovering from knee ligament damage he sustained in training in January, has been plagued by injuries since joining the club from Sporting Lisbon in summer 2006.

Pinilla has only managed eight appearances and scored two goals in two years at the club.

Hearts bought out Sporting's half stake in Pinilla when he made the move to Gorgie but are now believed to have struck a deal with Italian giants Inter to own the player exclusively.

The player's agent Hugo Rubio, who helped broker the deal which runs until summer 2011, said: "Mauricio has signed for another three years, he is happy and is looking forward to staying in Scotland."

Meanwhile, the frustrations suffered by Hearts caretaker manager Stevie Frail were evident after Monday night's 2-1 defeat at Falkirk. Frail has toiled manfully to keep Hearts on the rails this season, but the reasons behind the club's failure to reach the top six this season were apparent as the Tynecastle side went down at the Falkirk Stadium.

Frail says that meddling from the non-coaching staff at the club has a detrimental affect on the side.

Hearts said Frail would have full control of first team affairs when he was handed the role at the turn of the year but it appears that club owner Vladimir Romanov can't resist influencing the caretaker manager from afar.

Just last month, Frail backed Romanov over the adopted-Lithuanian's order not to play contract-rebel Anthony Basso.

However, in a brave move, Frail has gone public over his thoughts on the interloping by the club's powerbrokers.

He said: "Things have to change, not so much on the pitch; a lot of things happen off the pitch.

"There needs to be more of a focus and go for the same goal, right from the first day of pre-season; have no interference and have everyone pull in the same direction."

Frail is already looking ahead to the new season and identifying players.

He said: "To go with younger players next season you need to make sure you have quality and experience round about them.

"We need to make sure the ones that do come in enhance us, and there are good players out there who could do that and make us a better team."

SAINT COLLIN

ST JOHNSTONE have signed former Dundee United striker Collin Samuel on a two-year contract.

The Trinidad & Tobago international was allowed to leave Toronto FC last month and returns to Scotland a year after leaving United.

"Colin has been enjoying his time in Toronto, but his wife and family have been back here in Scotland and that has not been ideal and he has been keen to return to them," said St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes, who played alongside Samuel at Tannadice.

"When I found that out, I spoke with Mo Johnston who is the director of soccer at Toronto and moved quickly to bring him to Saints."

Romanov has maybe signed Pinilla to sell him on to sharpish as he has done nothing to suggest he has what it takes to play in the SPL , a big Jessie
'Frail is already looking ahead to the new season identifying players ' this must be a wind up this is scary , this is the guy that rates Elliot ,this is the guy who persists with 2 holding defensive midfielders while losing 2-o , mind you i remember when Robbo had a list of targets for Romanov and i doubt any were signed up as they were not on Vlads list .

Another fantastic signing from Hearts which will give the rest of the bottom 6 even more hope of finishing above the tarts next season.
How much are they paying him a week for an occasional appearance? More than the cost of a scale model of the new stand?
Enjoy the bottom 6 next year too.

Good Sing Mauricio Pinilla .but Another injury will be bad . Good Luck.

Samuel return is good. St Johnstone will be better strong.

Quick question.

If he has been signed up agaon with a view to punting him off quickly, who on earth will be gullible enough to take him off Hearts hands?

Honestly, he's scored less goals for Hearts than the Tynie Dancer an is unreliable at best it would seem...

#3 You're having a laugh. Samuel has had a couple of good games in the entire time he's been in Scotland. Apparently, he wasn't even that good in Canada!

Pinilla??? Is this a step forward?

Now Frail wants total control of a team where results, to put a kind slant on them, have not been of the standard expected? Has the mini-world of East Scotland gone mad?!

Not the news we are looking for Vlad, and if this is an indicator of our "ambition" I fear for us.
Let's just hope the manager who's coming in is the real deal, because any more puppets at the club and we could open a summer show on Porty Beach, for the bairns.
I'll be interested to count the number of Hearts fans who come on, and think this is a good signing for us.
I ain't one of them.

#7 - Not an unqualified good signing from my perspective but could be if knuckles down and actually does what he's getting paid for. Maybe the new performance-related structure will concentrate his mind a bit more in future.

Think the guy has quality but we do need to see it.

And as for Vlad - keep your meddling fingers out!

I'm very surprised. There's never been any doubt in my mind that Pinilla could be an exceptional player for us but I can't help thinking that money would be better used on more reliable if less flashy players.

If the figures are correct, I understand he's getting not far from £12k a week with a large proportion of that in performance-related bonuses.

Surely we could have kept Velicka for a fraction of that and had change for someone else who would excite the Hearts fans rather than Pinilla which, unfortunately, is likely to split fans further.

Johnny Jambo,

07/05/2008 08:40:22
The lad has talent of that there is no doubt, but how many of these "talented" players have we had who have not performed for us. It's not the fault of the player its the way the club is being run.
And yes I think he has been signed for a quick sell off I have no doubt in my mind, and contrary to some I believe he will sell.

Hearts should have saved the pinilla cash and bought somebody who cares. The guy has had numerous chances over the last two seasons but doesn't want to play in scotland.

If vlad was serious about getting a new manager then no players would be getting signed until the new manager was in place.

So Frail is saying nothing has changed.

Never mind all the previous broken promises, this year he said there would e no team interference.
He promised a new manager.

Yet 7,000 season ticket sales?

Good to hear Frail acknowledge the need for experience...I hope he is kept on as a coach! The new manager will need to be a strong character to manage the talented premadonas we have...if someone can train guys like Kingston and Pinnila to be team players there may be hope.....that said if they manage that I think the UN could do with them in the middle east.

CBJambo,

No doubt about it Frail will be gone at the end of the season... it is obvious with this statement he has reached breaking point.

I have nothing but respect for Frail and the sterling work he has done in the face of extreme adversity, but for his sanity he must look to pastures new. I think if he took time out and got his coaching badges and started in the lower leagues like Craig Levein; we'd see that he can be a good manager, all he needs is a bit more experince at being his own man.

The Pinilla signing is another huge blow for Hearts... yes he is a talent, possibly a great one... but his attitude stinks and he can make all the promises he wants about repaying the fans and the clubs faith in him... i'd sooner he was gone.

Hearts must get back to basics and starting with a manager who DOES choose the team... clear the boards of the dead wood. Vlad is using this club as a shop window for foreign nobodys... they can't play together and simply aren't even good enough for the spl... so who will buy them?!

Nade - OUT
Kingston - OUT
Goncalves - OUT NOW!
Pinilla - OUT
Beslija - OUT
Tall - OUT
Makela - OUT

If Vlad wants to sell players for profit... he'd be well advised to look at the youth setup which is producing great young players like Berra, Wallace, Driver, Jonsson, Glen and er... Elliot and Mole!! They are the future of the club and if given the chance to shine for Hearts will go on to bigger brighter things and make the club money. I hate to say it... but our rivals down easter road have got it right where running a team is concerned!

Still not renewed ST!

Vic, Good morning fella.

I found Frails comments a bit odd too. Certainly a change in tact by him, could be he is trying to get his move out.

#15 CBJambo...you can add -Elliot, Mole, Wallace,Zaliukas and Miko to that list.
I also believe that Shaggy has almost reached the end of the line. Perhaps interferrance has been a factor in his outburst, but I also think the contempt some players have for him (as evidenced on Monday night), has tipped him over the edge.
By the way, is Vlad picking the team for Robbie's big game?
20

Starchief,

07/05/2008 10:29:01
#15 Disagree with Kingston and Tall. Think they're good players. Let's see Nade after a pre-season. I suspect he still won't be fit and should be booted but if he proves me wrong and is a 90 minute player, then should do well.
21

Prof,

07/05/2008 10:40:30
#16 Could be Frail is referring to early part of season. Who knows/cares?
Based on the team I have watched over the last few weeks, there has been only limited changes so interference if it does take place is absolutely minimal and the recent performances are down to Frail and the players. Nice guy that he is, Frail is not up to it. So either back to youth teams or out the door for him.
As for the players #15 CB Jambo is spot on
Nade – Garbage. Looks knackered before the game starts.
Pinilla and Beslija – couple of lazy skiving sick notes. No sane person would offer these waster’s contracts.
Kinsgton –Likes playing for Hearts as he only has to play a few games a season. Rest of time he suns himself aboard. Clearly working his ticket
Goncalves and Tall – two bomb scares whose specialty is spreading panic in defence
Elliot/Mole/ Makela – simply not good enough.
Next season we need a new manger and several decent players, particularly strikers, who are willing to work hard. Otherwise we will be fighting it out in mid table.

#16 & #17 Lenny & VI, could it be that VR has put him up to this to do exactly what you said VI, put others off and in the end no one wants the job and the Vlad installs the curent guy in post. Or am I too much of a conspiracy theorist????

Knowing Vlad (well not that anyone knows him but you know what I mean...) anything is possible.

I have a real sneaky feeling that Frail will still be in charge next season. Who's to say anyone else would do any better anyway, as has been pointed out results havnt been bad since charistmas. Its hard to really judge the guy until he has authority to buy players etc. Although that appears very unlucky.

I personally just dislike him due to his petty little unprovocked digs at Hibs.
24

Johnny Jambo,

07/05/2008 11:15:28
#23 Lenny, I tend to agree with you and yes I also don't like those digs not just at Hibs at anyone until he has his own house in order he should keep it shut.

I must admit though he has done as well as any SPL Manager outside the OF since he took over although I still dont think he is the right man for the job.

Big T,

Stevie - you have my sympathy on Vlads' ongoing interference.

HOWEVER I can't believe that Vlad is the one responsible for picking Clum week!!

#27 VI yes anything at all, even that he may have a genuine interest in the club and actually bring in a good new Mnager, allow him to selct the players he wants and then allow the manager to pick them for a saturday, and build us a new 25000seater stadium.

No I am really deluded now.

Most of the comments from Hearts fans identify the same players which they would get rid off. Why then can the men running the Hearts not see that as well. Get rid ofthem bring in the new manager as promised and give him a free hand with new signings. If he fails to produce results then get rid of him, but he must have a free hand .Romanov keep your team ideas to yourself dont interfere. Then we might just go forward instead of back. Wishfull thinking I think.

Pinilla is a huge talent, something we don't have much of at Tynecastle at the moment. If (and it's a big if)we get a manager who can handle him and he changes his attitude big time.He has the capacity to be the best the SPL has ever seen.

BELIEVE !!!!!!
