Published Date: 16 July 2008
BOOING Calum Elliot is a habit that dies hard with some Hearts supporters. Although Monday evening's friendly against Glentoran was the team's first outing of pre-season, a portion of visiting fans chose to jeer the striker's efforts. The criticism didn't escape his ears and leaves him wondering how exactly to win people over.
Previous statements from Elliot alluded to the possibility of leaving Hearts, where his current contract runs until 2010. He wants first-choice status – in itself a challenge for anyone at Tynecastle. Whilst a loan move remains possible, he isn't lo
oking to engineer a departure and is open to all options, his preference being to stay and establish himself under new manager Csaba Laszlo.

Tonight brings another opportunity to impress the Hungarian against Dunfermline at East End Park. A summit on Elliot's future is expected sooner rather than later and the young forward is not short on loan offers. Thing is, he still has aspirations of reaching the top and knows Hearts offer a better avenue than most clubs to facilitate this.

The dissenting voices of supporters irk the 21-year-old. Indeed it's almost possible to watch his confidence evaporate on the field when the abuse begins. It wasn't expected in Belfast on such a low-key occasion and Elliot suspects people now believe he simply wants out of Tynecastle. Ahead of the visit to Dunfermline, he sought to right a few misconceptions.

"You heard sections of the support on Monday night. I'm not saying all of them because some fans were good with me. Some might think I don't want to be at the club but I think they've got the wrong end of the stick," he explained. "Perhaps what I've said recently makes it look like I don't want to be here, but I do. I just want to play football and I'm sure everyone understands that. If you're not playing, you aren't happy. I'm a young boy, I want to play football and be successful. Staying with Hearts would be great, I just have to see what happens."

Everything would appear to hinge, then, on a sit-down with Laszlo. The new manager is going through an evaluation process at present to assess those at his disposal. His opinions on Elliot will interest many of the Hearts public who were often baffled by Stephen Frail's faith in the player.

"There are a few teams interested but, to be honest, it's not up to me to decide. It's up to the manager. I'll need to speak to him," continued Elliot. "We haven't really had time for a chat yet because we were in Belfast right after he started. Once some of the games are over I'll maybe get a chance to sit down with him and talk about what will be happening.

"I'll say I just want to play football and get back to playing the way I know I can. In flashes I've shown what I can do but not over a sustained period. I'm not sure why, whether I've not been fit enough or whatever.

"Hopefully now I can get my best form back. I'll just have to work as hard as I can during the season, wherever I end up playing. I'm waiting on word from the club to find out what's going to happen. If I'm leaving I want to get it sorted as soon as possible, but if I stay it would be great. My family and girlfriend are all in Edinburgh so I'd have no worries about staying.

"I'll make my point, the manager will make his and we'll both accept it. I always had faith in my ability no matter who was at the club. I know that if I work hard enough and get back to my best I'll be in with a good shout of playing. Certain things have happened which I can't really go into. You just have to forget about it and move on."

Hearts' willingness to offload Christian Nade, one of Elliot's striking rivals, could spur the local boy on. Without the Frenchman Elliot would rank as the club's most experienced forward ahead of Jamie Mole and teenager Gary Glen, although reinforcements in that department are likely before the new campaign begins.

Early indications from Laszlo are that he will strive to right a few of last season's wrongs, which could prove beneficial if Elliot can endear himself to the amiable Hungarian. He replaced Glen as a substitute in Belfast and gave a workmanlike display, although the lone striker's role is perhaps not one best suited to him.

"The first game of pre-season is always difficult. It's really just a matter of getting some game time and then building on that tonight against Dunfermline," he said. "We can hopefully start to try and implement the manager's plans.

"Shaggy was great last year for me personally because he kept me in the team. Csaba is really enthusiastic, he has a real work ethic and we can see he's going to work us hard. He wants to achieve something and lift us as high as possible this year. Finishing eighth last season isn't good enough for Hearts and maybe some of our standards slipped towards the end of the season. Hopefully, with a good pre-season, we can begin the new campaign well and the whole place will pick up."

Elliot detailed some of the new measures installed by Laszlo since his appointment last Friday: "If we've got schedules and timescales then they have to be met. If not, we'll all be punished. Everyone has done well so far so we have been listening. We have to stay longer at Riccarton because he wants us to work an eight-hour day. I'd imagine over the next few weeks more new things will come into place. He'll continue to put forward his ideas and we'll have to adhere to them."

Obeying instructions from your boss is a fundamental for succeeding in the workplace. Elliot has the added onus of trying to convince supporters of his worth. That remains key to his long-term prospects at Tynecastle.

i've changed my mind about wanting hearts to bin elliot and some of the others..... for now.

the new gaffer seems to be starting them all with a clean slate so if he can do that then so can us fans.

if players can't or wont get with the program then we will know soon enough.

most of the guys who heckled him were drunk and were told by the majority of fans to 'shut it'.most of us will just wait and see if he stays then back him when he plays in maroon.

I'm sure he's a nice lad, but seriously? He's never shown that he's good enough to play in the SPL, and I think he really needs to consider a loan move to the first division for the sake of his own sanity.

If Elliot can knuckle down to some serious training and listen to the coaches and apply this on the field of play, then maybe, just maybe, he will fullfil the promise he showed in the early part of his Hearts career.

Let's give the lad an opportunity to put his talent where his mouth is and concentrate on playing football and not making a fool of himself on silly websites (you tube !)

Elliot has no sympathy from me, his previous outbursts to the press said it all.
That said, if the new boss wants to give him another bash, then I can go with that no problemo.
Just now it is Elliot who needs to turn it round, not us fans.
Going along to Dunfermline this evening, where I hope to see us playing with purpose and tempo.

Elliot looked alright under Burley/Rix.. we havnt had a proper full time manager since then only head coach/interim coach/ pyramid structure.

Maybe hearing your own fans booing you doesnt exactly make you determined to do well for Hearts?

Yeh yeh yeh - heard it all before!

Look the bottom line is that Clum is a lazy moaner who's only contribution to the team is getting red cards for stupid tackles.

He's had more than enough chances and the fans who have to suffer him week in week out have had emough!

Get shot NOW!

new boss in town so maybe one final chance, deserved or otherwise. if he throws another chance back in hearts or our faces then it's his lookout where he ends up.

I'm not averse to a clean slate but Elliot (along with others) has to prove himself double quick. If he's wondering how to win the fans over here's a tip Calum ........ stick the ball in the net and stop greetin'! Saying he wasn't looking to engineer a departure seems a bit rich given earlier reports.

Calumn Elliot is a good young player. He is clearly suffering from a loss of confidence and we as supporters have a duty to encourage and not attack.

He showed in the Burley Season he can play. Hes not and out and out striker I know that much but with confidence and good coaching he will come good IMO.

The best we can do is is give them a chance as per the managment, if not working you and your crowd can go back to getting on there backs, most of us try to encourage when these guys are wearing the jersey, nothing you can change by booing once there on the park.

He's the top man at hertz. Look at his qualities. He's slow, he's thick, he ain't pretty, can't score goals, can't get a game in probably the worst hertz team in years. Keep him. Get him on a long contract. He is the perfect jambo.

Clum deserves a chance the same as everyone else.
According to Csaba 4-4-2 is going to be the prefered choice of formation.
If that statement proves to be correct then its not just all about Clum, its about getting a good partnership going with another player.
Its also about getting good service from the midfield, last season was a shocker because the philosophy was about not getting beaten 1st and winning second.
Clum or any of the strikers didnt stand a chance.
All the nonsense about "oh he worked his socks off" is twaddle IMO.
Good strikers score goals, give them the right service & things will happen.
We didnt create sitters for the guys to miss last season.Lets have lots attempts at goal then we can criticise the strikers for missing.

Rant over

Csaba is the man for me.

I am not drunk, and can say it he isn't good enough. He is more likely to turn us into tears. He should be done under trades description for calling himself a striker. His sendings off and his antics last season were disgraceful.

Callum Elliot Facts:

10 goals since 2004 ... A striker who cannot score.
No temprament.
Fat.
Slow.
Lazy.
Selfish on the ball.
Looks like he should have a Mcdonalds uniform as opposed to a Hearts strip.
Gobs off to the Evening News at least once a week.
Is of the belief that he is better than Hearts.

Please tell me why we are reading yet another Callum Elliot story when there are much more important things to worry about. The fact of the matter is, is that he wouldnt get his game in the SFL. The sooner he leaves the better. He is the absolute incapsulation of what is wrong with Hearts just now.

CALUM - HEARTS FANS DONT LIKE YOU AND WE NEVER WILL - YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH - LEAVE

I can't believe all this give him a chance under a new manager from all those that gave hom pelters before and rightly so.

What are you saying, that he wasn't trying before but will under a new manager?

If he didn't play for the shirt before, regardless of manager, then bin him finally.

#29 - Enlighten me as to this undoubted talent Elliot has and remind me of one game this boy has ever bust a gut for Hearts.

He is of the belief that he is a hard luck story, someone who never had the breaks. I bet he cries himself to sleep at nights too. If ever there were a chance for him to prove his worth it was last season when we were crying out for a striker after Velicka was sold. But instead of manning up he just moaned to the papers.

Good point #30 - you are right, he has has his chance too many times.

I will pay his megabus to Inverness. Good riddance.

Would love him to be involved in a swap deal with either Niculae or Cowie.
30

#30, don't get me wrong. i'll be straight on his back like one of his youtube pals as soon as he displays that he isn't making any effort under a new gaffer.

it's up to him to show us we were wrong.
31

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

16/07/2008 15:39:27
Niculae is top quality and would be a good signing. Being from the same part of the world as Csaba you would think it could easily happen, much better for elliot if he went the other direction. Just not the required standard for the SPL and would benefit from dropping a couple of divisions if Inverness don't want him as a makeweight in any deal.

If he is as good as he thinks then he will make it back to the SPL.

The manager has definately installed renewed hope we can have a good season. 8 hour days like the rest of us should be minimum for what they get paid and i like what he has to say regarding formations and tactics. Think we have a gem of a manager without having kicked a ball in the league yet just from what he has to say. Very astute and his English is first class.

Graeme H: clarify one thing for me. Are there two Graeme H's. One claimed season ticket holder for 20 years then threw me by saying(last week) not a Hearts or hibs man. genuine question.
In answer to your question.I am saying that he had the wrong attitude before....( hardly a unique atribute of a young player who thinks he has made it it before he has) and allow him the opportunity to start with a clean sheet under a new /more experienced manager in a club atmosphere more condusive to a young players development.

#31 Against Celtic (boxing day) season before last(celtic came back from 2-0) he was outstanding. End of last season v ICT scored twice /worked his socks off.

Are you both off the opinion that several Scotland under age managers/frail & John Robbertson are all wrong by rating him as 'talented'?

NB: the ball is in his court to change all i am saying is with the right attitude and the support of the HEARTS fans he has a chance.

33

Steve_HMFC,

#34 it wasnt the season before last it was the one before that, even though we eventually lost, he was man of match

he also had an outstanding game up front on his own when he humped hibs 4-1 that season

People on here are saying he has been given loads of chances but no-one at Hearts has had a decent chance recently.

Another player who only showed in flashes how good he was, was Bednar. That game against Celtic in August 2006 he was outstanding, and there were others too. But there was no consistency from him and often he looked lazy and wasnt trying.

Now look how liberated he is at WBA, banging goals in left right and centre.

Why is it that so many players fail to achieve consistency with us?

Maybe its because for a while they knew having a good game didnt guarantee a game next week.. in fact Ivanauskas seemed to drop players for having a good game (remember Beslija finally getting a chance against Dun Utd and playing really well then being on the bench at ER the next week)

So if you had all this in mind, your own fans booing you would hardly make you think "I really want to do well here"

I dont think Elliot is brilliant but I think a proper "chance" involves a manager picking players on ability not politics, and fans not booing him before he has even touched a ball

34

Talk o' the Toun,

16/07/2008 16:54:46
#35 Elliot actually played deeper against celtic(i stand corrected re year)and linked the play superbly.
Totally agree he is not brilliant & it is down to him to change but what HEARTS gain by 'so called' fans berating him at every opportunity is beyond me.
However i rest my case that JOPPA JAMBO can speak on behalf of himself(and Graham H) but not all 'HEARTS FANS'
35

Who?,

16/07/2008 17:16:07
If Elliot is better as a deeper forward rather than a striker would it not be an idea to play him as a box- box midfielder for a couple of the friendly games?

A box- box midfielder is the one position in midfield hearts desperatly need. As there is nobody a present able to do the job and its only friendly games at the moment it could be worth a try?

Have to say theres a lot of goals I've seen from Hearts players over the years that i will never forget but Thats one goal that will always stand out for me.

hard to say which is the best i've seen. wee robbo's left foot shot at tannadice in the 3rd from last match in 85/86? stephane adam vs rioters in the '98 cup final? mark devries 4th vs the hobos in the 5-1 game? edgaras janny vs the hobos in the 4-0 semi?

not necessarily the best ever goal i'm going for, it's the overall kudos factor too.

Agree Wee Robbos against dundee UTD was a screamer right into the top right hand corner, we'd just beat them 2-0 in the semi the week before hand at Hampden. Fergies against Bayern comes into my all times Favs as well, as does The free kick against celtic in the Scottish cup 4th round at Tynie that sent them out 2-1 we won that day JC was it? Then Gary Mackays against Clydebank. loads of others as well. Adams is a good shout as well mind you

Its called business & really has bog all to do with the footballing side. Uganda will most likely not appeal to FIFA & even if they do by the time FIFA do anything Hearts will have coughed up...

SERGEI: as i was there no need to visit anywhere.... of circa 1 000 HEARTS fans a small minority booed the team at half time after a dreadfull 1st half . After an improved 2nd half there was no booing.

Your point..... ?

Try posting objectively you might get more satisfaction....
HEARTS FANS: sorry to say no real positives. Every move broke down in last 3rd:; desperation for forwards obvious.... SERGEI NB OBJECTIVE POST.... in the 1st half ex Hibby HARPER was the best player on view & gave Wallace a roasting.
