Laszlo insists he had final say in recruiting Kaunas keeper

Published Date: 16 August 2008
HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo yesterday poured scorn on any suggestion he was just another puppet of club owner Vladimir Romanov after the Tynecastle club welcomed goalkeeper Marian Kello from Kaunas.
While the last goalkeeper Hearts signed from Kaunas, Eduard Kurskis, was one of the poorest ever to play for the club – he gifted Rangers victory with an embarrassing late gaffe at Ibrox last season – Laszlo insisted the 25-year-old Slovakian was a f
ar more gifted footballer who had impressed him during the two games Kaunas played against Rangers in Europe.

"Before anyone asks a question about Mr Romanov, let me tell you something," Laszlo cautioned journalists who attended the club's media briefing at Riccarton. "Don't ask me about him. This was a decision (taken] between me and Mr Romanov. I saw the Kaunas game against Rangers here and this guy (Kello] is a good player."

While it seemed unlikely any player from Kaunas (the club sponsored by Romanov in Lithuania] would be allowed to move to Scotland as long as they had a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, the 2-0 loss to Aalborg in Denmark on Wednesday created the opportunity for Kello to sign for Hearts.

"I was the person who decided that if the time was (right] when Kaunas did not have any chance in the Champions League or Uefa Cup that I needed this guy here," Laszlo went on.

"We need goalkeepers here. I saw this goalkeeper in the training camp in Germany when he played two games (for Kaunas]. He convinced me. I think that the best possibility is to know that we look for quality.

"The owner also wants quality. We don't do too many transfers.

"I don't know about what happened here in the past but the owner has two teams and it would be crazy not to use the possibility of bringing in talented players."

Laszlo believes in structure at a football club and the days are surely numbered when Steve Banks will fill the dual role of coach and first-team goalkeeper. The earlier attempt to sign Hungarian Janos Balogh on a six month loan faltered when the internationalist wanted to mull over his options.

"We made an offer," reported the manager. "He told me he wants to think about this. You cannot force someone to come here. Next week after the Rangers game we can come back to this question and I hope we can make a good decision."

Stressing he was more interested in quality rather than quantity when it comes to making further moves in the transfer market, Laszlo acknowledged that Hearts lacked experience in a number of positions and that his squad was still two or three players short of what he would wish.

While there may be one more import from Lithuania – "I have one other candidate (from Kaunas] who could be a quality player for us in the future but I don't like to talk about this player's name" – it will be interesting to see what funds, if any, are made available before the transfer deadline to strengthen the side in the full-back positions as well as in front of goal. He admitted both young full-backs Jason Thomas and Lee Wallace would benefit from having older 'guides'.

Having also signed striker Mike Tullberg, who will come into contention for a place next week, and Ugandan international David Obua, Laszlo has been boosted by the quality of player already available to him at Tynecastle. He had particular words of praise for both Scotland centre-back Christophe Berra and midfielder Michael Stewart, indicating that Stewart possessed the instinctive leadership qualities required to augment Berra's captaincy.

The lack of a natural goalscorer, however, in spite of finding the net three times against Motherwell, remains an issue. "Even on the training ground, we create a lot of chances and don't score," he admitted. "The biggest problem is (the lack] of a killer instinct."

While an element of hype followed Hearts' 3-2 win over Motherwell, it shouldn't be forgotten Rangers remain odds-on favourites on home turf to win a fixture they've dominated over the past 20 years. That said, Ruben Palazuelos confirmed the new found enthusiasm among the Tynecastle players for Laszlo's commitment to playing a more fluent brand of passing football.

"With a new manager, it's about getting the ball down," observed the Spaniard. "It's not about long balls. The challenge now is for us to play football. For me, as a Spanish player, that will suit me much better."

While it remains to be seen if Thomas will continue at right-back – the availability of Palazuelos in midfield after missing last week's game through suspension could allow Christos Karipidis to drop back into defence – Christian Nade isn't yet fit enough to play 90 minutes and Jamie Mole may again shoulder responsibility in attack.

It has been a less impressive start than Hamilton Accies have had. Get things into perspective. Shabba is a no one, Hearts are a bottom six team. Know your place, get off you high horse and file quietly into bottom six mediocrity.
Shabba is a fraud and that will be proven in six game and by christmas he will be bannished to the dark place of our minds only occupied by messrs Shaggy, Rix and Malofeev.
Get your head out the sand.

The otherposters are right. You did disappear when your team were humiliated in europe, you were also very quiet when your team embarrassed Scotland in Manchester and were humiliated when the real team from Glasgow pipped you for the title. Your posts are without any value and as an impartial observer, I'd go as far as saying you were a bit of a tit!

Ambition or 'delude ambition' has seen your team sell their soul and sadly your club is now heavily in debt because of it. How much is it? In fact, just tell me how much it will be if you build your super duper £51m small stand! You don't need to take into consideration the global credit crisis or the expected champions league victory which I think Vlad predicted for this year!

Thats the mentality of these inbred tramps, would rather Hearts lose than have any real ambition for their own team. it always has been that way with the vermin from leith. On a footballing note. Mendes is not worth the money paid and the spaniard is a massive gamble. The loss of cuellar is a massive boost to everyone outside ibrox and the fact that celtic got loovens(although I think he may be rubbish) is another sign that they are streets ahead of rangers. x

Erm no. I think that bigot has fulfilled his ambition already. He has played for Rangers at their peak. He now realises that rangers will never play at a higher level and has decided he wants to play against the best in England. Sad but true. Rangers are going to be fighting a losing battle for top dog in scottish football this season, cuellar and loovens have seen this already, Boyd, mcCoist and mcGregor will realise this before the end of the transfer window.

The new Hearts keeper looked ok against Rangers, but, he didn't have to make a save worthy of the name.

I feel sorry for Jamie MacDonald though. He has played consistently for QoS over the past two seasons, including last season's run to the Scottish Cup Final.

He hasn't made any crucial errors in that time, indeed, he has consistently made a series of good saves and has on occasins been in effect a match-winner.

He's established in the national Under-21 team and now needs to "train on" and prove he can do it at the highest domestic level and in Europe.

Allan McGregor grabbed it when givent he same chance, a pity MacDonald seems destined to miss out because the new Hearts boss preferes a European journeyman to a promising Scot.

Bit sad really for Scottish football - why don't we trust our kids?

yes there will be a few folk nursing some badass hangovers this fine morning.

#104 scorchio, i dunno, csaba appeared to me to be genuine enough when he was speaking about how the keeper was his choice. he hasn't struck me as another stevie frail type who's happy to rent out the use of his mouth to someone else.

my team for today:

banks
thomson karapidis berra wallace
kingston stewart palazuelos mikoliunas
nade mole

could be driver at LM but i think miko can do some damage by running at the rioters OAPs and cutting inside on to his better side. he's shown what ball striking technique he had in the past. he's also comfortable on his left side.

this game needs two strikers to start with for us to get a foothold in the game. playing 4-5-1 needs your striker to hold it up really well and i wouldn't trust nade for that and wouldn't want to put that pressure on mole. audrey can make an impact off the bench and driver can deputise for either wide midfielder if required.

mon the hearts.

#108 irk, could well end up so. csaba was talking up nade earlier in the week so i've got a sneaky suspicion that he's in contention.

he was on about being positive so i don't want to see a 4-5-1. surely far better to be positive from the start and look to change things if necessary if we are fortunate enough to get in front.

we will have far more options after this week with obua and tullberg coming in. hopefully more to come.

We played 4-5-1 last week and scored 3 goals so it CAN work. We should have scored at least a couple more.

I would stick with it until we get Nade and Tullberg fit, and Glen back.
I think an unfit Nade is a passenger and he must learn that he cannot be considered until he is fit otherwise he'll NEVER lose weight.
65

victorian of gorgie ,

16/08/2008 09:45:11
#110 irk, i was under the impression that he was a bit fitter, from what csaba said. if not then you're right, he shouldn't be in contention. i trust csaba to leave him out until he's fit so we'll see.

maybe glen might make it into the squad for today so he's another useful option.

i hope the players are well drilled to the special requirements involved in playing in glasgow, in that they are forced to abide by a different set of rules to the other team. csaba should make it known in no uncertain terms that silly bookings, diving, raising hands, mouthing at the ref will get us into deep sh*t and that he will come down hard on any player who costs us the game by being stupid.

csaba is a clever guy and i imagine he wants his players to be clever on the pitch.

How can that keeper suddenly become good?
I've got no complaints, he did Rangers a turn before.

Mornin guys, we all set? Ive found a site thats got todays games advertised with the links to watch them, the Rangers v Hearts match is on that site but as yet the links arent available, theres plenty time yet I will be checking every so often, But as i said yesterday I wont be posting them on here. I will post them on TOTT forums. For anyone interested if you havent joined already heres the link

http://talkothetoon.freeforums.org/index.php

About the game today. I think he will still play the 4-5-1 or more commonyl used 4-4-1-1, I dont think Csaba will leave our defence to exposed, but all credit to him if he does go 4-4-2, Im with you Vic i said it throughout the week I think Nade will get a shout today, whether its from the start or from the bench we'll have to wait and see, I also think Tullberg will be in the squad maybe the bench. I don't think Kello will play, He will be on the bench as well.

#112 And if Kaunus are mince then what exactly did that make Rangers (apart from embarrassed and £10m worse off)?

As with any team playing the OF away we travel as much in hope as in expectation but we've got more hope now than I would have thought possible a month or so ago.

C'mon the JTs - make it a double for Vlad!!

Looks like there's a lot of "stay at home" fans again today. It p155es me off big time that we have all these clowns slavering about how much they love the team, yet won't go to away games...particularly at Ibrox and Parkhead.....and spare us the filthy weegie stuff...either you support the club through thick and thin, or you're a fair weather fan who turns up or not when it suits. That in itself is fine, but just chuck the nauseating cr4p about "we love our team more than anyone else loves their team"...if that's true, get out there and support them.
I think Rankgers will get horsed today !!

It's nice to see all the Gorgie boys spitting the dummy out because there are Rangers fans submitting comments on this thread. These threads are for everyone to post comments and are not exclusively for fans of the teams mentioned in the story.
I understand the frustration some of you guys feel when you get the grade "A" erses from both sides of the OF coming on and trying to wind folk up but try and remember that not all fans of the OF are typical of these plebs.
I am all for banter and wind ups when it comes to talking about FOOTBALL but when it comes to the other stuff forget it.

Have all the Jambos been rehearsing "Mr Loverman" for todays game ? ;o)

#3 BLEEDING HEART
I can't see why you should try and chase away fans from other clubs. If we have a disagreement, surely its better to win by force of argument rather than mealy-mouthed and childish insults flying both ways?
If Rankgers fans etc. appear, we need to rise above the tendency to attack their club...that's THEIR problem..and surely we should concentrate on debating and assessing what's best for Hearts here.
The cat-calling is very very boring and banter is fast disappearing. Rise above the gutter guys, leave that for others if they wish.

That point is well taken....and I'm well aware of that as it applies today, but I was also referring to the sometimes pitifully small away crowds we've taken to non-OF grounds as well. I mean, the attendances at Gretna (I know that it wasn't the fixture of the year),Paisley, Kilmarnock etc at the back end of last season were pretty pitiful, and I know that the team was gash at the time, but its case of support your team through thick and thin, and if you can't/won't then stop bragging about doing so as so many posters do....that's just embarrassing.

Spot on m8, it had nothing to do with the amount of fans at the matches. Although i was at the Gretna game. and many other away games but not all, As i normally use the saturday were away to catch up on paper work etc. I would nver questions a fans loyalty for not going to away matches. Lots of people have different reasons for not going to away games, either spending time with the wife and kids, or those guys that maybe see their kids at weekends only etc, plus money issues. The fact many supporters hold season tickets but dont travel away is enough for me to call them loyal fans. Even those with commitments such as work maybe shift patterns etc, if they cant make every game but attend the ones they can does that make these guys any less loyal? Not in my book it doesn't

#124 DOWN......

I can't buy into that. There is no way that it can be claimed that Hearts don't have their fair share of nutters on these posts.......and the best way to defuse the "outsiders" intent on annoying Jambos is to simply ignore them...it IS a free country, and we're FREE to ignore them........but the sad attempts at attacking others through homophobia, accustions of sectarianism etc are hopelessly counter-productive as practised by a number of site "regulars"and demeans everybody posting here. This needs to get back to be a football thread with some banter and merely attacking everybody who either disagrees with you serves no purpose and doesn't add to the debate in any way. The simple tuth is that the thread gets torn apart, not by the "intruders"...'cos its a free and open site to them as well..but by the by now predictable futile and hostile reactions. It's therefore self defeating, and all we do is destroy any enjoyment and purpose amongst ourselves. Just watch and see just how many of your fellow jambos descend into puerile name calling every single day here. It's becoming a real problem, and results only in bad language, cloning, moderator deletings, accusations flying backwards and forwards etc...none of which show us up in a very good light.
Maybe a bit of laughter and tolerance would go a long way here.

As i revealed the other day the deal for the Hungarian keeper is not dead, and in fact an offer was made.

"Laszlo also revealed that the move to sign Kello would not conclude his interest in the Hungarian keeper Janos Balogh."

"The Hungarian goalkeeper is very talented, but it is a decision between me, the goalkeeper and the club," he said.

"At the moment he told me he would fly back. We made an offer.

"He told me he wants to think about this. You cannot force someone to come here.

"Next week we can come back to this question."

Hearts: MacDonald; Thomson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Kingston, Stewart, Karipidis, Driver; Ksanavicius; Mole. Subs not used: Kello, Palazuelos, Mikoliunas, Nade, Makela, Cesnauskis, Jonsson.

Bit of a surprise MacDonald getting the shout. Thats Banksy full time coach now.

"Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo today revealed that goalkeeper Steve Banks is set to move into a goalkeeper coaching role with the youth team."

Dougal was itching to send off Miko as soon as he stepped onto the pitch. There WAS contact made for his first booking, the rangers players arm was out, maybe minimal contact but still contact all the same, as for Mikos challenge, it was certainly no where near as bad as Mendes challenge on Stewart where mendes wasnt even spoken to. Then we have a penalty claim denied from a clear hand ball from aurdeys shot.

Rangers may have been the better team overall, but those were terribly decisions by a corrupt official
116

Daillyman,

16/08/2008 17:01:18
The Gers deserved the 3 points and Mendes had a fine match. I thought Beasley coming back from injury did all right and will give the Gers another option.

The better team on the day won and the referee had nothing to do with the outcome, the Hearts player should be fined for his stupidity.

2 games played and 2 wins for the Gers, and with new signings coming in things are looking a lot better.

Come on United tomorrow.
117

LionheartFodithman,

It seems very strange the amount of posters that have said this week that we would have a few players booked inside the first 20 minutes,we would not finish the game with 11 men and that we would concede a penalty.
Is it because we have incredibly talented football experts or is it because every time we go to Ipox the script has been written by the officials before the game kicks off..
Shocking display by the officials and only in Scotland can they get away with it so blatently.

Im not going to argue with you and say Rangers didnt deserve their win, but the manner in which they won is disgusting. The last 10 - 15 mins rangers were rocking. We then have a penalty claim which was clear as daylight denied which would have set the game at 1-1 then its game on. Yes you may have felt hard done by as i said you were the better team, but just being the better team on the day does not entitle you to 3 points. There has been many occasion we have outplayed teams and rangers have outplayed teams and been beated or drawn the match, it happens to everyone. But dougal made sure of your 3 points today, simple as that. He is corrupt and a despicable little man, looking forward to his next game at Tynie.
120

jon doe,

16/08/2008 17:14:17
Hearts should of left the park with 11 men, feeling they had done everything to take something from the match.
The support leaving knowing they had given it all even in defeat things can be used for the next match.
Scaba wants to draw attention to his sides talent and reputation,he will not be pelased with the high amount of cuations yellow cards and one plainly idiotic red card.
Second match of season in a big attraction and its a defeat for Hearts and Scaba.Jambos will look for his Man Management and leadership skills to weld shut anymore indisciplined mentality that exists. Making excuses for any malfucntions in the side at this stage would harm any chance of recovery,Scaba will hunt this untill its gone forever.

I thought hearts were robbed.

Mikolounas made the most of it , embellished it even, but there is no doubt that he WAS held back.
None whatsoever.

Kevin Thomson made a meal of a late challenge by the black guy in the first half. Absolute hystrionics, just the same as he did when he simulated agony after diving to feign a foul by Samaras last season at Ibrox.

I didn't see the second yellow for Mikolounas, but Dougal was obviously gunning for him.

I thought Hearts were denied an excellent penalty claim late in the second half. The rangers player turned his back to block, but his arm was adrift, and the shot was strong and on target. It was very similar if not identical to the penalty Maloney gave away against Man U in the champions league : maloney turned his back from the incoming shot but the ball struck his arm. In that case it wasn't clear that the shot was on target.

So overall it was a dull game today, with very little entertainment value. Hearts will feel aggrieved that they weren't awarded the penalty which could have turned the match.

Boyd took the penalty well but was otherwise inneffectual and did little to dispel the notion that against a half decent defence, he offers very little threat.

the very fact that i and others felt 100% comfortable in saying that hearts would be bent over a barrel and right, royally shafted, no way would we finish the game with 11 players, and never in a million years get the right decision from the ref says all you ever need to know about scottish football. it's sickening.

scottish football is not a sport in the true sense of the word. sport should always be conducted with a level playing field, both competitors treated equally by the official, regardless of ability, reputation, personal likes and dislikes.

i'm sickened for miko. i'll tell you right now that miko should ask for and be granted a transfer from hearts with immediate effect. he's still targeted by some berserk agenda from scottish referees and will NEVER be officiated in the same manner as any other player in the scottish game. there is still an unsporting vendetta being carried out on him, we know why, but it's simply contrary to what sport should be about.

denied a stonewall penalty to rescue a point? damn right we would be. nobody should really be surprised. the game is as bent as a nine bob note in this country but people will only ever moan about it when it affects their own team. nothing will ever change unless there is an organised revolt against it.

the only man to have the balls to speak the truth about our 'game' is romanov and yet he is ridiculed fro pillar to post.

rioters and celtic can just have a 4 game series to see who wins the league.

Better idea is if HMFC put the ball in net more than the opposition they get 3 points.

Because of the money and support the OF have they will battle for the title most years.

Another idea is Mad Vlad the billionaire does a Murray of old, and gives his manager megabucks to try and win the league, wouldn't that be great for Scottish football. And the Hearts support would be out in droves.

#187, how's this for a novel idea? get the referees to administer the matches on an even-handed basis, regardless of player ability.

i've seen other sports where one player is better than the other, or teams, and what do you know? the refs or umpires don't favour the better player/team.

I think the Hearts will be an improved side this season under Csaba.

He seems to have given them a bit of organization and leadership that was sadly lacking. If he can sign some players and the owner leaves him alone I look for them to finish 4 or 5 in the league.

I'm impressed by the way that Rangers have put their troubles behind them and started the SPL season in a winning manner. Two tricky games, two wins, two clean sheets, and 3 of our strikers with a goal each.

I'm not about to say that a European exit is a good thing, but at least it does allow us to focus on what has to be the main prize this season, the SPL title. Our season will only be forty-odd games long, with a large number of free midweeks, in sharp contrast to the draining 68-game campaign last term.

There's no doubt that our league form suffered from the sheer number of games last time, and I do wonder if we'd even have won today if we'd had to play a CL qualifier in Denmark in midweek.

I also have to express my surprise and delight at the speed of RFC's response to finding themselves with an extra £8 million to spend following Cuellar's departure. Davis is a predictable, though very useful signing, but the capture of Aaron, Edu and Mendes is far less predictable; foreign players with an admirable degree of skill and flair, and with the ability to produce the unexpected and (whisper it), actually provide entertainment.

I reckon we're only one good quality central defender away from a really talented squad now, and I'm growing ever more optimistic about our chances of cleaning up domestically. The situation seems reminiscent of the start of the 2002/2003 season. Rangers had finished second in the SPL and won both domestic cups the previous season (2001/02), and had then proceeded to exit Europe rather embarrassingly at the first hurdle against a small Eastern European dream. Celtic were hot favourites, but we went on to win the treble, which no team has done since.

I wouldn't be amazed to see this campaign unfold similarly.

Walter said today that he had "one position left to fill", which just has to be central defence, particularly if he's farming Webster out for the season.

There seems to be a distinct lack of rumours linking RFC with anybody in this position, but I'm sure that someone is coming. I just wonder if another bid for young Reynolds of Motherwell may be being considered, particularly since it has been suggested that Webster is going in the opposite direction.

Rangers were more convincing winners this week than last (that wouldn't be hard because Falkirk played them off the park) but there remains a dullness about their play which gives rise to very few scoring opportunities.

The ponderous build up allows defences to shape themselves accordingly and neither Velicka nor Boyd showed any justification for their inclusion in the starting line up.

Boyd drilled home the penalty very well, but otherwise made no contribution. When Velicka does pick the ball up during a counter attack, he doesn't seem to know what to do with it. His goal last week was a tap in but for which his display against Falkirk would have been as forgettable as the performance he put in today.

Kenny Millermissedasitter looked sharp when he came on today and his run which lead to the penalty was quite impressive...the hearts player that felled him obviously didn't know about Kenny's scoring record, otherwise, he'd have let him shoot.

The best that can be said is that Rangers have , for the moment, pulled back from the precipice.
The Smith regime came close to extermination last weekend : had Falkirk converted that penalty and managed to hold on, I honestly believe that Smith would have walked.

A week is as long a time in football as it is in politics, and tonight, the pressure is off.

But the lack of imagination in the play and the absence of any ruthlessnes in the strikers are the factors which will be rangers' undoing this season.
They were fortunate to get off with it today, paricularly as a result of a dubious ordering off and an even more dubious penalty let-off...over the season, they will need to inject some flair into their play otherwise their title challenge will go the same way as the last three.

Totally agree with the "lack of imagination" accusation. But this was Mendes' first match, and the English players are generally a little behind us in terms of pre-season preparation. Davis is about to return, Aaron needs a couple of weeks to get to required fitness, and Edu will join up shortly. These players can provide flair and an attacking threat that RFC probably haven't carried since the 2003 treble winning team, particularly when Ferguson returns to play behind them and provide leadership.

I reckon you will end up grudgingly impressed!

Strange that you admit that Mendes is a good player, and that you know nothing of Edu or Aaron, yet then carry on to say that we have "nothing but triers".

PS Edu was MLS player of the year in 2007, and Aaron was player of the tournament in the 2007 European Under-19 Finals, so they have a world of promise.

Can't be bothered answering every single claim that you make. I don't suppose we'll ever have a "right-back" by your reckoning. After all, you regularly described Hutton as poor, and he went for £9 million.

Aaron and Beasley are wingers, BTW.

Bougherra, Mendes and Davis will all do an excellent job, IMO, so I remain confident.

I didn't see Miko's second yellow, but the first was way over the top.

Simulation is one thing when there was no contact at all e.g. Thomson/Samaras at Ibrox last year, but when there is simply exaggeration of the effect of the contact e.g. it shouldn't be dealt with in the same way save for the most extreme circumstances e.g. Lovenkrands/Alan Thomson.

Mikolounas was , as a matter of fact, held back. I'm not sure which rangers player it was, but as plain as day a rangers arm was held up in front of him and blocked his path.

The referee should have awarded Hearts the foul, and possibly a word in Miko's ear not to overegg it.

That he did neither was quite appalling, and his decision to book Miko was more than harsh and smelled strongly of prejudice because of the player's previous conviction.

Daillyman,

To right off Edu because he played in the MLS after going to university and was voted best young player in a NA. league, is a bit harsh.

At 22 the boy has a load of potential, it will take an adjustment period to get used to the rigors and hustle of the SPL but the lad should prove a dependable signing.

If he can do as well as some of the other players who have played in a league "that is off the serious football ladder", and have then come over to Europe to play, and be a successful, then the Gers will benefit.

Dougal is by nature a prejudiced person.

He still can't explain why he sent Strachan off.
Dismissal of a manager shouldn't be done lightly, and any referee who makes that decision should be able to give a clear explanation why he took that action.

That Dougal couldn't explain himself can only mean some kind of prejudice.

Frankly, he should have been kicked out of football after that episode.

Referees exercise a judicial role ...Can you imagine a judge being asked by an appeal court 'why did you find the accused guilty ?' and getting the response 'I dunno'.

Naaahhh...Dougal was 'fun' oot' , and should have been relieved of his whistle, permanently.

I think that Whittaker needs a little work on his tackling and distribution, but he is pretty good in other areas.

Broadfoot is certainly limited, but he is at least solid, and he'll do an adequate job against the majority of SPL opposition.

I find your stance so extreme that it's actually difficult to begin a meaningful debate. RFC took the SPL to the last day last season, won both domestic cups and reached a European final. An outstanding season by any objective measure, yet you insist on calling them "Losers" and describing them as "mince".

This season, we find ourselves (albeit unwillingly) in a position where we can concentrate all our efforts into domestic football. We've signed three Premiership players (Bougherra, Davis, Mendes) for around £8.5 million. We've got width by virtue of finally having a fully fit Beasley and signing a very talented young Spaniard, and we have a plethora of options up front, and while you may not see any of our strikers as world-beaters, I reckon they have the ability to do some damage in the SPL.

The race is on my friend. Believe.

I think when you have two teams in a match with a 'safety first' philosophy, it makes for a very dull game, and that's exactly what we got today.

Kenny Miller was a breath of fresh air in the few minutes he was on the park and breathed some life into the game.

As a season ticket holder since Toronto FC started in 2007, I would have to say the standard of play of Toronto is well below what OF supporters should be used to watching.

Saying that it is a new side which will get better (like the Gers lol) there is a terrfic fan base with 16.5k season ticket holders, and a stadium capacity of 21k.

Trounced?

You mean by Celtic at CP when you first beat our 10 men with a scrambled 95th minute winner, then a couple of weeks later narrowly edged us again by virtue of an offside opener and a winner from a penalty awarded for a foul that occurred outside of the penalty area?

We were beginning to struggle from the sheer weight of fixtures by the time those matches came around, but if we'd got our fair share of refereeing calls in those games, we would have won the Treble.

No fixture pile-up this season, and a better squad of players, so the Rangers are coming!

I'll reserve judgement on Rangers.

They haven't impressed me in either of the opening games, but they got the 6 points and that can't be dismissed.

The fact that they haven't conceeded though is down to a combination of poor finishing (Higdon) and poor refereeing (Dougal) and shouldn't be seen as offering any endorsement of the defence.

It's true that Celtic were flat last week, but this Celtic team has already proven itself capable of flair, grit and a winning mentality at the business end of the season.

The rangers side of last season is pretty much gone : today Velicka,Lafferty,Bougerha started and Kenny Miller came on as a sub. Also Beasly hardly featured last season and we saw him on today.

So it's a new team , and we have to allow some time to pass before reaching any judgements.

Provisionally, I'd say not much has changed : difficult to score against , dull to watch, churn out results a good whack of the time.

Push me and I still expect Celtic to edge it. where have I said otherwise?

But it's not the name of the football club that determines how good a team is. It's the players that wear the shirts.

A couple of weeks ago we didn't have Bougherra, Mendes, Aaron, Davis or Edu. Four of those players have cost us around £11 million, and the other one is one of the most sought after young talents in European football. I also didn't know then that we would be in a position where we could dedicate all our efforts to the SPL.

If you want to bury your head in the sand and pretend that none of that makes any difference, that's fine. But I'm confident that we will be a better team than last year, so if you want to stop us, you'll have to be too.

As 3IAR title holders the Tic must be favourites again this year, but with the additions made to RFC's squad, in an area where it was really needed the race will again be tight this season.

I still think it will take the new players a wee while to settle in and WS to find his best team, but things are starting to look better. The competition for places will be great.

Hoping to see the Tic finish 3rd in their CL group, go to the UEFA Cup semi final then lose, and have about 3 cancelled matches to play in April on top of the regular schedule.

Edu is a young 22 year with a lot of upside, and a lot to learn, I think he will be at Ibrox for a couple of season at least.

I just hope the Gers fans are not expecting to much right away from the lad. He has only been in the MLS for the last season and a half, last year he looked terrific in a very mediocre side, his form has dipped a wee bit this season.

He is a good holding midfield player who does not mind going forward when he has the chance.

Like Lafferty and the young Spanish lad they are players for the future,, who this season can play their part when called upon.
