CSABA Laszlo's primary objective remains to turn Hearts into a competitive force in the Scottish Premier League, but, refreshingly for the Tynecastle support, the recently-installed manager has also made it his duty to start building bridges with a disenchanted public.
Aside from the long-running managerial issues which riled fans before the Hungarian's appointment last week, arguably the main gripe against majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov's controversial running of the club was the lack of communication wit
h the paying customers, as the likes of former coach Stevie Frail and even the club's translator were wheeled out to face the media and explain decisions they had little or nothing to do with.

In short, minimal co-operation had become the norm. However, Laszlo, has already recognised that his new club have become too distant from fans and media, and the former Ferencvaros and Uganda manager has resolved to ensure that such an evasive approach is not allowed to continue under his rule.

"The most important thing is to work together, which is maybe a new idea at this club," he said.

"In the last year or so the fans have been suffering, but now we must change direction. We want to bring everybody back to Hearts, we want to bring the fans back, we want to bring the media back.

"We want to show everybody we are a serious club, we are a good club. We are open and we want to show the fans that we are here for them.

"We have a responsibility to the fans to give something back. Sometimes I talk too much... but this is my job."

Indeed, first impressions of Laszlo suggest that such an amiable and charismatic man would be tormented if he were ever forced to keep his thoughts to himself.

Following an engaging press conference last Friday which did plenty to win over those in attendance, the 44-year-old then willingly gave up over half-an-hour of his time to carry out various media commitments in the wake of a disappointing, but enlightening, 1-0 defeat against Dunfermline at East End Park in his second pre-season friendly in charge on Wednesday night.

For most clubs on these shores, such an approach is considered obligatory, but given Hearts' recent history, Laszlo's obvious penchant for communication represents another tentative step on his new club's long road to redemption in the eyes of its followers.

As long as he bins the wasters and useless, is allowed to bring in a few new ones, we'll be ok. Compared to the team that finished 2nd, though, we only have 2 or 3 that would ahve got a run then - and they would have been the 3 worst in that team...

Sotirios Kyrgiakos-Free Agent

Dianbobo Balde-Free Agent

Paul Telfer-Free Agent(Now He trial Leeds Utd)

I think Soto or Balde and Matteo is good addition..Paul not good.

I know They have Wage Problem..but Hearts can Complete Them.

Matteo can play LB And CB. Have EPL Experience. Balde is good defender. Soto Is Excellent Bundesriga defender.

Hope Laszlo consider Them.

Wrong. The most important thing is for Moronov not to interfere in team management.

Laszlo you will learn the size of your task after Hearts are filleted at Ibrox and Motherwell mug the points at Tyncastle to leave a feeble Hearts team bottom of the league. Get ready for it.

This man's good.
He's been at the club for a week and he seems to have pinpointed everything that's wrong with it!

Now the big challenge - getting it sorted. Will need Vlads support (or at the very least, won't need his interference) to get it done, so I guess we have to wait and see on that one. But it could be very different round Tynie now, and that has to be a good thing.

# NO 5 - Have to agree with NO 7 comment, we are just clearing out the overpaid under achievers and youd bring these guys in, deffinetly not gonna give you the scouting job. A decent forward would be his priority at this time.

The Maroon Seasider,

Well Csaba, you could start your new era of communication by giving us an insight into which positions you are intending to bring some new faces in to, and what is happening with your backroom staff? It also seems you are in a position to start showing certain players where the exit is. How is Nade by the way?
12

Prince Sanjay - Kenny`s son,

18/07/2008 08:24:43
Prediction for the season:

Hearts: Csaba's influence has major initial reaction on poor hearts dressing room. Confidence is raised and with it, results. Season starts brightly with good points on the board. Expectations rise amongst fans and media. This might be the year... Romanov gets bored and sacks Csaba.

Hibs: As playing standards continue to decline, Hibs mantle as a selling club continues. So called stars (Kerr, AOB, Rankin) secure lucrative moves to second division giants competing for promotion.

A long season awaits. I dont think either manager will be around come the end of the season.
13

Away down in Gorgie,

Christ - he has been in the job a week - give him a chance. He has indicated that the squad is too big, he has to strengthen 2 or 3 positions and that youth will get his chance - music to my ears.

We have had more communication from the club in the last 7 days than the previous 7 months - small steps but necessary ones.
14

Gorgie's Finest,

18/07/2008 08:37:33
Csaba is not going to tell anyone what positions he is looking for players for, until he shifts those he is replacing, at least thats what i would expect. I don't think anyone here would like to here that their employer was looking to fill their position with someone else would they. Plus if he doesnt find a player he wants for a position, if they player is has to use in meantime has to play how low would his confidence be knowing that the manager was looking to get shot of him or doesnt rate him...confidence is low enough without making it worse.

I think we will know by Sunday/Monday what positions he is looking to get players in for, its been stated he is only taking a squad of 23/24 to germany those left behind he does not see in his plans. Then out of the 23/24 there will be a few he may offload as well, but he will be giving them a last chance in Germany i would think, for them to buck up their ideas and show their worth keeping. I expect a lot of youngsters in the squad to go to Germany as well
15

The Maroon Seasider,

Dunbar 18/07/2008 08:41:54
Managers bring in players to positions that are already filled, all the time. I think it's referred to as adding depth to the squad.
16

The Wookie,

Edinburgh 18/07/2008 08:43:09
Hello boys - sorry for the delay but the Wookie is back from 6 weeks sunning the fur in the Caribbean.

Csaba was never first choice - but he was on the radar...he comes with a better coaching pedigree then 99% of the candidates...

Trust me - he is his own man and will not put up with some of the garbage we presently have as players. I know that Belfast & dunfermline were games where he just wanted to look at the players at his disposal - Germany is where he will start turning things around and really doing it his way....

The big news is today at Riccarton some of the "big" name players will find out that they are not going to Germany & start looking for new clubs......and expect to hear about 3 or 4 players arriving in Germany for "trials" and signing talks!!!
17

GrahamL,

18/07/2008 08:51:56
#17 Depends what positions he's looking for. I think anyone can see that we need a new striker or two, and the players in that position probably wouldn't mind. Ditto left back - we've only really got Wallace there.
But what about right back? I'd say we could do with a new one, but we do have one experienced guy in Neilson and a young guy in Thomson as back up. Similarly in Goal. If Csaba said he was looking for a new one it'd be a blow to their confidence (which wouldn't be an issue if he got a new one - it's the situation where he says they're not good enough, but then can't get a replacement, which'll ruin the TOGETHERness of the squad)
18

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 18/07/2008 08:56:39
If this guys actions are as good as his talk then I'm corner may soon be turned. On the field he can see within 1 game what previous huddies fail to see over sustained periods. He has also told Vlad which players he wants to keep and which he wants to go, along with the positions to strengthen. And finally he wants to talk to the fans and media, therefore anyone who thinks he is another puppet who, wont speak due to lack of team control, is completely wide of the mark. My one nagging concern is that he has no local influence in the coaching team and therefore takes a while to understand our game, which is completely different to european football i.e. look at Paul le Guen. Fans are sceptical at present and will soon turn if things dont happen quickly so I think he needs someone british in their to ensure he hits the ground running.
19

The Maroon Seasider,

Dunbar 18/07/2008 08:56:39
2 strikers, one left back, and one right back should be fine for now. And put Berra on a course of steroids.
20

GrahamL,

18/07/2008 09:01:15
#21 Sounds about right to me. I could be tempted with a new keeper, and maybe a more attacking midfielder if the new boss really rates them.
So just the 6 new first team players and we're sorted!!
21

Edinburgh's Big Team,

EH11 18/07/2008 09:02:37
The positions I would strengthen immediately are:
Goalkeeper, Left Back, a midfielder who can get beyond the strikers (last seen was paul hartley) and another 2 forwards.

2nd phase signings would be:
right back, centre half with experience, 2 wide midfielders who can defend as well as attack
22

ValdasTheMan,

Edinburgh 18/07/2008 09:06:21
Csaba, Get the right players on the pitch playing the right system and getting the right results, and there'll be no need to charm the fans (or media). If we have the same season as last, you'll need to spend the majority of your time being charming.
23

Ronaldo Stuffed Everyone,

18/07/2008 09:13:22
It amazes me how many posters think Csaba is going to keep the same team as last year. His interveiw with the BBC confirms what I thought. He has taken a few days to look at ths squad and has already decided its to big and has a number of passengers who need binned.

build bridges with the fans and the media?

fans yes, stuff the media.

a lot of the media have acted in a diabolical, irresponsible way during this so called period of minimal co-operation. it's as if they have been conducting one of biley's deluded wee cyber-wars. in the face of this supposed minimal co-operation, instead of simply refraining from writing about hearts, a lot of media outlets have made up their own stories and/or twisted a lot of things to suit their own personal agendas.

bridges do need re-built with fans though. a lot still seem very reluctant to get on board with the new growing sence of optimism eminating from tynecastle.

there is an unwritten contract between a football club and it's fans. it's the fans' obligation to support the club and to continue to put money into the club, it's the club's obligation to play fair by the fans. failure to meet these obligations shouldn't necessarily mean that the other party can choose not to fulfil their end of the bargain.

people have bought their season tickets, now it's time for the club hierarchy to show their own willingness to honour the unwritten contract.

Who?,

18/07/2008 09:19:02
You don't have to be bob paisley to work out where the hearts team needs strengthening in quite a few areas.

As somebody already posted it is from now on that Laszlo will earn his money. The players not going to the german camp must be encouraged as much as possible to find new clubs, the club can't afford a bobo balde (a high earner sitting around getting paid).

The german camp is also the best place to give different trialists a run out. I'm expecting a few interesting arrivals from different parts of the globe. The only thing i would caution is that the attributes required to be a good player during a scottish winter are entirley different from the attributes required to be a good player during a contenental summer.

These signings will contribute to the early season results. These two factors are on which Laszlo will be judged so he needs to get it right.

#26- a few very good points esp about the press. There are a few (myself included) who have yet to renew for next season. Most of us are extremely willing to, and a new manager is a great motivator but what we really need to see is not just the communication improving but a few decent signings.

Laszlo's certainly "talking a great game" - and it's a breath of fresh air - but let's stay grounded.

Romanov must support Laszlo's plans and be seen to do so with actions. If he fails to do this, then he will be breaking that "unwritten contract" (again!).

#29/31, nowadays there is no need for the media to act as a conduit between a football club and it's fans. the club can communicate directly through the website after all.

the media only exist in their jobs because of the football clubs and football supporters and they would do well to remember that. they don't contribute anything to football which would make the game grind to a halt in it's absence. they are mere outside observers with no stakeholding in the game.

in short, they aren't doing us some massive favour by being involved in the game. football doesn't owe them anything.

Vic good post and thoroughly agree, stuff the media, they couldnt giva a rats ercky about Hearts or the fans, Their goal is to sell newspapers and by having an anti-Hearts/Romanov agenda they sell many more, as the OF and other buffons outwith Hearts fans that believe their guff will buy them. Lets Csaba and Hearts get the fans back onside first and start doing the talking on the pitch, then maybe later start thinking about the media again.

Still have not renewed, but as i said yesterday im swaying towards doing so. The next fortnight will be the decider on whether I do or not. Players need brought in and the deadwood shifted, because theres not a hope in hells chance will I go to watch players that couldnt give a ,monkeys about playing for the club.

I've watched some dross at Tyncastle in my life, but the dross we had late 70's early eighties had one thing many of this present lot dont have, thats a but Heart about them and pride for playing for the club. A player does not have to be a world star to put on the maroon as long as he gives 110% whenever he steps onto that pitch I will always back him, Robbie Neilson is an example, yes we all have our whinges about him, but one thing that can be said is he is a trier and always gives the best he can, there have been many other examples through the years.

#32 BH & #36 GF, i thoroughly respect the path that people have decided on regarding the merits of renewing / not renewing their seats.

in a normal supplier-customer relationship, if you're not happy with the goods and / or services provided, you are at liberty to choose another supplier. supporting a football club deviates from that normal relationship, there is no alternate supplier.

that's where the unwritten contract thing becomes a little tricky.

yes it is up to romanov, morally, to fulfil his end of the bargain. people talk about not renewing until players are signed, does that mean that they wont renew under any circumstances if they aren't happy with the signings?

it's a judgement call for each individual in the end. with this football club - fan relationship, maybe there are no normal rules to go by.

As i said I will support and get behind any player, thats willing to play and give 110% every time he puts on that Hearts jersey. I stated as you know away back as far as January I would not renew until, A. a new manager was in place with full control, B, the deadwood and wasters were shipped out, and players who want to give their best for the club brought in.

Nearly Half of that has been fulfilled so far, the new manager, the full control we have to wait and see, but it looks like he had been given the reigns. The dross being shipped out are next and judging by Csabas comments will happen very soon.

As i say things are looking up, and im swaying towards renewing.

Is the season ticket debate really that relevent anymore?
If the team continues to slide the way it has been then the inevitable drop in sales was always going to happen.
If the team starts picking up then the walk up sales will fill the ground anyway.

I expect Vlad has been fully aware of this for a while,so the whole renew/dont renew was only ever going to be a personal protest.

Is it sometimes better to have less season tickets and more walk up punters so that more people get to see the team play ?

The only benefit for the club is to have the dosh safely in the bank before the season starts. Is that an incentive to Vlad ?

40

Gorgie's Finest,

In a sense your correct, however its that last part which makes the Non renewal relevent. Vlad knows he has to turn things around, he knows he has to put a winning team on the park or sales will drop, so either way whether it be through ST ticket sales or WUTTG sales he has to change things. ST as you say gives him the money in the bank upfront, WUTTG he knows fans just wont show if nothing is changed.

What i was trying to get at (badly) was does anybody think that he is that bothered about getting the ackers in the bank pre-season by way of ST or get the same revenue over the season.

I cant really imagine a guy who is dealing in telephone number money deals is going to be that fussed,as long as the dosh arrives mind.

Yes,he knows full well a successful team on the park is the way forward for himself personally and his sky-rocket.

#58 SRA - Alicante may not be Paisley Road West, but you've got to admit that from what we've all read so far there do indeed appear to be grounds for at least just a wee bit optimism!

Us lot need all the positive scraps of information we can get at the moment. Humour us!

I wonder if TommyTommy would cast that insightfull eye over the clubs that buy players for undisclosed fees, whcih would probably account for nearly every club, as it happens all the time

X bought for undiscolsed fee

Everytime a player is bought this transfer market we should ask him his there is money laundering going on becuase the clubs do not divulge what there paying

While im optomistic im afraid i dont quite share you level of optimism just yet, I'll wait and give it a couple weeks or until new faces arrive before i start getting overly optomistic and predicting where we will finish in the league this season

Hi GF

True, but when did TT ever let facts get in the way of a random argument!

In terms of predictions I do reckon we'll end up higher than last year. How much higher I'm not going to predict but it would probably be easier to do better than it would be to do worse!

Some interesting reading:

Csaba Laszlo

Even before former Cranes coach Csaba Laszlo settles into his new job as manager at Scottish side Hearts, Ugandans are split assessing his impact on Ugandan football.

At the moment, several questions are being asked like: was Csaba a worthy investment? Is Uganda really going to miss him? And most importantly, can The Cranes surge ahead seamlessly at this tricky phase?

Looking back, Csaba was not even the first choice for the job, (it was Vojislav Sivic) and searching for Csaba's positives is like squeezing blood out of the stone. Here's why:

1. No foundation
No coach in recent memory has arrived with such high expectations as Csaba. But unlike the two Cranes European coaches before him, Burkhard Pape and Westhorff Otto, Csaba left Uganda without a trace of any meaningful legacy. Uganda failed to qualify for the Nations Cup, he failed to build or advise on football structures and even failed to hold a single coaching clinic (what would he have taught anyway?). As the head coach, he also failed to oversee the creation of under-age teams to feed the senior side.

2. Failed to win an away match
This was another jinx Csaba came to break but instead his two-year reign extended the longest spell for Uganda without an away victory to seven years. A loss in Abeokuta to Nigeria was understandable but draws in Lesotho and Niger and the Benin humiliation were inexcusable.

3. Hot-headed vulgar
One would have expected the self-confessed chess player to handle a team with utmost delicateness; instead, it seems, Csaba would have carved out a great career in kick-boxing and perhaps would have been a serious contender for the World Vulgar Championships title (if it existed). By the time he left, he could have broken more tables, chairs, cups and tea flasks than the number of times he watched Super League matches. His fight with Ronald Muganga punctuated with F-le

with F-lettered words still baffles many.

4. Shapeless Cranes
Grooming a long-term Cranes team was one of the main assignments of Csaba. On the contrary, he used the shortcut and went for today's win at the expense of tomorrow's success and heavily relied on a bunch of ageing professionals for results.

5. Bragging liar
Reading Csaba's Wikipedia biography as well as his comments about African football, leaves a stinging feeling in many Ugandans' hearts. As if claiming to have lowered Uganda's ranking from 167 to 97 wasn't bad enough, he lied to the world that Ugandans had dubbed him 'The Miracle Man.'
Truth is he found Uganda ranked 97 in the world and 23rd in Africa. By the time he left, Uganda was still 97th in the world whereas it had dipped to 26th in Africa. (fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking)

6. Super League enemy #1
It's shocking but party animals were more associated with Csaba than football enthusiasts. Csaba was more frequent at cocktails and music concerts than Super League matches where he was supposed to identify emerging talent. He didn't even mind when the technical committee summoned players for him. Little wonder he started Uganda's must-win match against Tanzania in May with seven natural defenders.

7. Nothing to show for
It's hard to imagine that Csaba reigned over one of Uganda's longest silverware drought periods. Two CECAFA campaigns ended in agony, with only a bronze at the 2007 CECAFA tournament to show for. Defeats in the semis to Sudan (2006) and Rwanda (2007) don't bode well for the Hungarian-German.
Much-maligned and poorly facilitated Mohammed Abbas (Csaba's predecessor) managed a runners-up silver in 2005 - the same year The Cranes, made up of mainly locally-based players, upset World Cup-bound Ecuador in an LG Four-nation tournament held in Egypt. With the feat The Cranes also won $32,000, to date Mulindwa's biggest achievement as FUFA president.

and again...

8. Csaba's buddies knew him better
I will borrow quotes from some of his closest associates;
Rogers Mulindwa: "We don't understand what this man is doing since he came," said the FUFA spokesman after Uganda had been ejected by Tanzania in the Africa Nations Championships.
Asumani Lubowa: "Don't blame us for selecting the team for him because he doesn't know the players," replied the FUFA Head of the technical committee to criticism over his committee's peddling in team affairs.
Lothar Matthaus: ""Are you joking with me? … I can't believe this has happened. He is an assistant manager and would be good in that role, but not as manager. I don't think he has the personality to be a No.1, but I also think he doesn't have the experience. There are many things he doesn't have for this kind of job. Time will tell if Hearts have made the wrong choice. I am very surprised," said the former Hungarian national team boss upon learning of Csaba's appointment at Hearts.

9. Uganda was always a stepping stone
Isn't it ironic that Csaba celebrated every big Cranes win with an application for a better paying job? First, he secretly applied for the vacant Cameroon job after beating Nigeria 2-1 in Kampala and then sent his CV South African sides Mamelodi Sundowns as well as Orlando Pirates after narrowly missing out on qualification. That he went for Hearts after beating Angola isn't surprising.

10. He said it!
His statements say it all;
"There is nothing worth watching in the Super League," he said when asked why he gave local matches rejection's leprous kiss.
"I'm not here to transform Ugandan football but to coach the team to success," he responded when pressed to hold coaching clinics.
"I hope Uganda qualifies but if we fail, it won't be my fault," he answered after beating Niger 3-1 in the last match of qualification for the 2008 Nations Cup.
