HEARTS captain Michael Stewart has accused the media of having "manipulated" remarks he made about Hibs to stir up controversy ahead of Saturday's derby.
The former Hibs player says he will boycott the written press after arguing his remarks that Hibs had capitalised on slices of luck had been "twisted". Stewart had been speaking at an event alongside Hibs skipper Chris Hogg to promote the fact both t
eams will wear strips commemorating the war dead during Saturday's match. "We went along to promote a fantastically worthy cause and all the papers have done is spin everything round into a pile of **** which I never said," said Stewart. "By doing it they are trying to undermine our position and boost Hibs as much as possible. I wouldn't be happy if we were sitting second in the league and somebody was having a go saying we were lucky.

"People will read the headlines and say it is sour grapes. It is not sour grapes as I never said it. I was asked a million times if I was surprised that Hibs were sitting second. I said 'No, I'm not'. I said they were doing extremely well to keep their run going and that when they had a slice of luck, they have capitalised on it whereas whenever we have had luck, we have not capitalised on it."

He added: "They (the press] are complete parasites. They tried to manipulate, twist and put a spin on everything that has been said.

"I won't be speaking to the papers again as they cannot be trusted and clearly will do what they want to suit their agendas."

The Scotsman attended the event at which Stewart made his original remarks, and we consider our report to be an accurate and fair account of what the player said, which was also carried as a news item on the club website.

I'll just quote the last paragraph:

"The Scotsman attended the event at which Stewart made his original remarks, and we consider our report to be an accurate and fair account of what the player said, which was also carried as a news item on the club website"

So Mikey, it was carried on the club website as well. So I suppose that they're parasites as well, eh? You'll not be talking to them again as well then, eh?

Or could it just be that you are in fact the parasite?

In any case, is this the kind of character that your CLUB CAPTAIN should be made of?

Oh dearie me.

But then it's the Hibsman. It's all a conspiracy. Everyone's against us.

Some of the predictable comments which will no doubt follow from those who will seek to defend the buffoon CLUB CAPTAIN.

The media.....twisting what people say......can that be true?
Does this sort of thing happen?

I've just read the website comments and it does actually back up what Stewart says. Maybe you should have read it before you posted sir. Unless they've changed it on the website then yeah...his comments have been given a little twist to come across as him having a little dig at hibs.

So I guess I'm defending him on this one. I can't defend his performances over the season so far though. He is one of many who is simply not performing as well as he should be.

Only confidence I'm taking into the Derby is that the form book goes out the window. If I take it into the Derby then we will get beat. I think we can only take something out the game if we turn it into a bit of a battle. We have played some nice football in very sporadic patches but not consistent enough in any game to give the opposition a problem. Don't let Hibs pass the ball around and just clog the midfield. It's boring to watch but if it got us 3 points I wouldn't care.

Result matters in these games.....I'm sure Hibs fans feel the same.

Sensible comments.

No, you are quite correct, I have not looked at the Hearts website. It's not really something that tickles my fancy really!

So who do we believe? The Scotsman or the Hearts Website? Or do we care?

I have no doubt that Stewart probably said something he should not have. Why? Because Michael Stewart, for all his failings, speaks from his heart. Not always sensibly mind. Sadly, this often clouds your mind when the gob gets opened.

At this time, Michael Stewart should be doing his talking on the pitch. He's not doing that. He's not a CLUB CAPTAIN.

You're right about the derby, it could go either way and I'll not bother giving a prediction. Past experiences tell that those on the upper foot tend to get shot in the foot a wee bit so I'll keep quiet on that one.......

I saw him being interviewed on telly recently.

Hadn't realised exactly how ginger his hair really was.

This was shown before the watershed and I think it's completely disgusting. Ginger and maroon really do not go together.

I blame Alex Salmond.

What MS said was totally correct.

The Scottish media are currently much more interested in making up their own stories than representing the truth.

The fact that both Edinburgh clubs were collectively paying tribute to our war hero's was simply not good enough story for them to report. How they sleep at night is anyone's guess.

Shame on them all...

Couldn't agree more #9 but only in the case of the disgusting Red Tops. I would call them comics but the problem is there are people out there who believe what is written in them!! I just refuse to read them.

The press are parasites...nohing new there....who gives a sht we have got a Derby to worry about.
Michael has been woefull this season. However we were even worse v Well without him. No doubt he has the ability ...no bigger stage than Saturday to shut up his critics(incl me).CSABA cut out the 'poor old me' routine....your squad is MORE experienced than the majority of other SPL teams...it is you who is failing to motivate /organise them ...If NADE is fit enough(as opposed to fit) to start play him (due to lack of options)but FFS CSABA do not ask him to do what he is physically inapable of doing I.E. leading the line on his own.....get GLEN up there beside him.
Either put a hot rod up OBUAS er$e or drop him/obvious to an idiot that Driver is lacking confidence so leave him on the left as opposed to the right(where he is clearly weaker). I am sue even CSABA will work out that the last thing to do against a very good Hibs side with an abundance of attacking options is to sit back....take the game to Hibs and we will win.

#11 since you're at home you probably really should try to take the game to Hibs and go for the win, rather than let Hibs dictate the play. However Csaba will no doubt go for his 1 man up front routine. Which to be fair did bring you some results last season but hasn't been working quite so well this year as you don't have a Bruno who can pull a goal out from midfield.
I predict a low scoring match, one goal in it or a 1-1 or 0-0 draw. No way will both teams have 11 players at the final whistle. Hibs' discipline has been pretty good so far, this might be the big test though.

It sound like this is news to Mikie? He sums it up very well I thought. You can see them now in there wee office with the picture of the famous five on the wall trying to give Yogi something to pin on his wall.
Grow up Hibsman even footballers can see your game.
Now captain Mike you go out there on Satuarday and use this nonsence to get our team going.Give us a result and a lot of things will look a whole lot better.
JT for life.

Dearie dear.
If anyone actually bothered to read what he said in the first place, he basically said, "Hearts and Hibs have had a bit of good luck at some point this season, Hibs have been able to capitalise on it and take it forward, Hearts have pissed it against the wall."

Seriously, would anyone argue with that?
If anything it's a compliment to Hibs. And, as he's said here, you don't get to 2nd place at this stage on luck alone. You win a few games, build up momentum and away you go.

Sad thing is, I don't see this Hearts side ever building up that sort of momentum. I don't see the win by 3 or 4 goals that we really need to get the fans and players believing again.
But, yeah, who wants to read any sort of fair account of the clubs.

PURE BOOOOOOO AND THAT!!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good for Mikey. The press have been woeful over the last few seasons. I remember listening to BBC Scotland's Paper Talk (Monday nights when Jim Traynor and co attempt to justify their Old Firm bias and headline chasing) and they brought up Hearts community music programme which had launched. They slagged it off basically and completely misrepresented the story. One said "So, it's basically fans coming in to play instruments?" and had a good old chuckle at the funny Jambos. None of them even knew that it was a community initiative to help continue to make the club more than just a football club and to give kids somewhere to go after school to do something worthwhile. Or they did know and they just twisted the story for a cheap laugh. My money's on a bit of both. Either way, I don't know why the cub puts up with it.

#20 Is that not more a Rangers FC phrase than a Hearts one?

All I would say is that the Hearts & Hibs captains were there to promote a worthy cause, and as per usual the journalists went with the "sensational" quotes from Stewart instead.

Very poor form, but is anyone surprised these days with the level of journalism at an all time low?
22

Mr Jaffa,

Edinburgh 04/11/2009 13:22:00
Note to Scotsman editor re the last paragraph above.

Yes you are right the quotes used in the article are an accurate reflection of what Stewart said. However, and its a big however, the headline of the article 'Hibs have enjoyed the good fortune that has eluded Hearts' and the opening paragraph of the article

'HIBERNIAN have good fortune to thank in part for their present elevated league position, according to Michael Stewart. By the same token, the Hearts captain believes his own team have bad luck to blame for some of their own poor results, which have left them languishing six league places and 11 points behind their rivals.'

both DELIBERATELY misread the reader into thinking that Stewart was making an issue about luck being the difference.

If you reread the article and completely ignore the headline and first paragraph then it is a piece of factual journalism.

The headline and paragraph is the paper attempting to produce a story that will sell papers. Well done. You were successful. Its just your journalistic integrity (or lack of it) that has suffered.

Very Very poor. and until the standard improves I will continue to read the Scotsman/News website but BUY the Herald/Sunday Herald.

If Stewart starts on sat,Hibs have a man advantage.

Those are not the actions nor the words of a club captain. If that is what he believes to be true then by rising to the bait, as he sees it, he is giving credibility to his detractors. For what it is worth, I think that he is a fantastic player but he is not stable enough either on or off the pitch to be given such a prestigous role as the captain of HOMFC. He has had to follow in footsteps of players that you would consider as role models and that would have been tough enough. I would have settled for Mikey Stewart, midfielder and team member, and see how he got on with that.

It's difficult to discern the truth here, of course.

However, does it seem LIKELY that Stewart would seek to give Yogi the chance to "pin-the-news-headline-on-the dressing-room-wall" type of motivational opportunity? Hardly.

Does it seem LIKELY that the media would seek to present Stewart's comments in an inflammatory, headline-grabbing, sensationalist, manner? You bet.
