Alexander is great in Europe but we'll score

Published Date: 03 May 2008
DEAN SHIELS has managed to do what most top European sides have failed to do this season – score against Rangers.
Although he watched Fiorentina fail to find the net in 240 minutes against Walter Smith's side, the Northern Ireland international is convinced Hibs will again find a way past UEFA Cup hero Neil Alexander, pictured below, tomorrow.

And if Rangers have proved invincible as they've marched into the UEFA Cup final, Shiels insisted they are far from unbeatable, although he admitted trying to find a way past the formidable defensive barrier of David Weir and Carlos Cuellar was a tough proposition.

However, having picked up just one point from the first two of their five post-split fixtures, Shiels admitted he and his team-mates desperately need to take something from tomorrow's televised clash at Easter Road.

Shiels took his goals tally to ten by opening the scoring against both Dundee United and Aberdeen but was left bitterly disappointed his strikes didn't count for much, much more as Hibs desperately try to keep third-placed Motherwell in their sights.

Revealing that it's something which has been discussed at length during a series of meetings at Hibs training ground this week, the 23-year-old midfield star said: "The top teams in Europe cannot score against Rangers.

"It's hard to do so because they have a very, very good, well-organised defence. But I am still confident we can beat them. We are confident we can beat anyone either at Easter Road or away from home in the SPL.

"We've beaten Rangers at Ibrox already this season and, as we have seen in games such as their Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone, they have weaknesses which hopefully we can exploit.

"We have to go into the game confident and believe we can win it, that's the attitude we need."

While delighted to see Rangers lift the profile of Scottish football by making the final against Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester in less than a fortnight's time, Shiels admitted he wasn't too unhappy to see the Ibrox players endure 30 minutes of extra-time in Florence before they won a penalty shoot-out.

He said: "I looked at the Rangers bench on Thursday night and it looked very strong. They have a great squad and, even if players become tired, they have another of quality waiting to come on.

"We have to start the game fast, that's going to be the key, to get off to a good start, put them under early pressure and see how they react. But I believe, if we perform to the best we can, then we can win."

Celitc's back-to-back wins over their Glasgow rivals has reignited the title race once again and Shiels admitted that was the perfect scenario as far as Hibs were concerned with Motherwell playing Gordon Strachan's side today and with two matches against Rangers to come.

He said: "It's good for us that Celtic are still going for the league. They will want to beat Motherwell and, hopefully from our point-of-view, they will do that. With us playing tomorrow we'll be looking closely at that result and hopefully we can either leapfrog them with a win or narrow the gap on them."

Shiels stressed, however, that no-one should ignore the threat of Dundee United who currently sit between Motherwell and Hibs but he admitted he'd happily settle for the Fir Park side coming to Easter Road on Thursday, May 22, for a winner-takes-all encounter.

He said: "As we've got the better goal difference I'd take them being three points ahead of us and having to come here. I think that game will be a key match but we cannot afford to look too far ahead, we have to concentrate on picking up as many points as we can and I don't think we can afford to lose tomorrow." Meanwhile, boss Mixu Paatelainen admitted he hopes the harsh lessons learned at Tannadice and Pittodrie will stand his side in good stead over the three remaining games of the season.

He said: "We scored a great goal against United, played well and got ourselves into a winning position only to concede a silly penalty. Then, although we didn't pass the ball well at Pittodrie, we again got ourselves into a winning position and shot ourselves in the foot.

"It's disappointing but sometimes it goes like that and we have to take heart from the fact we were ahead 1-0 in each of these two tough away games. Hopefully we can keep our lead in future.

"We have a hard run-in with Rangers, Celtic and Motherwell to play, all three of them teams above us. But every other club in the top six has a tough schedule, it's very difficult."

Of course the smellies are beatable. There are no penalty shootouts i the league therefore they need to score goals nd therefore they need to have players in both halves of the field. We have scored against Rangers in three out of four games against them this season. We will score again on Sunday but whether thats enough is another story...

The best-Rangers,

Scotlands Pride 03/05/2008 12:36:15
Get in there Rangers. No one would bet against us achieving unprecedented greatness.

It's a shame there is such bitterness in Scottish football and Scotland in general. Strachan for example in his praise for the club couldn't hide his natural bitterness.

The SPL, run by member clubs, cannot help but show their bitterness via the current incumbents of power, celtc, hibs and dundee utd.

Still thinking of themselves above the interests of Scottish football in general.

Hang your heads in shame.

Neutral Observer,

What's the matter with these Scotsman / Evening News reporters? Can't the do a simpel addition? Fiorentina actually failed to score against Rangers in 210 minutes, not 240 as 2 of them hve now written! 90+90+15+15 = 210.

A bit over the top with this Dean Shiels interview though. What makes him think that any Scottish team can do what a top Italian team couldn't? Oops, did Rangers really lose 3 goals at Celtic Park last week?

Just watched the Motherwell-Celtic match and now thoroughly agree in biased refereeing, scandalous.Balde clearly heads the ball out and they score from the corner.Reminds me of when Scotland were dumped by Italy for the euro qualifiers.Stonewall free kick on the edge of the Celtic box disallowed yet blatant for all to see appart from ALL officials present a few meteres away.Huffy wee Strachan was looking for a yellow card every minute and Robson got away with elbowing just about every Motherwell player unseen by the blinkered referee and linesmen of course.

Under Pressure?

Don't get me on bias refs or I will be here all year telling you chapter and verse, every single case of bias favouring rfc and conversely refs and officials who are anti celtic.

Onto tomorrow and I think you will find Rangers will be running on empty. But will still manage to scrape a draw. 0-0 as usual.

Thought it was a poor game myself and Mothwerwell reduced it to a physical battle. Still McD's goal was a moment of quality and we ground it out thanks to big Samaras who is our super sub.

Heat is on Rangers.

We are getting a few breaks but to be honest we have had far more against us this season. If we'd had a little bit of luck this title would have been wrapped up by now. We have only really deserved to lose one game this season - and that was at Ibrox when we lost 3-0. Yes the ref was bias but Rangers were more up for it on the day and we had a few players who just didn't want to know.

Every other game we have deserved to win but bad luck and bad ref decisions and some bad finishing has cost us.

No matter what happens we are still the best team in Scotland by far. Rangers organised, physical approach was served their limited players well but there is no kiddin about - they ain't a great team by any stretch of the imagination.

Mon the hoops and mon the Hibees.

We are also current Champions and have been for the past two seasons.

We are the best team by far - most goals scored, fewest conceded and currently 8 points clear. You know it's true and so do Rangers FC.

Stand up for the Champions son.

Celtic had to dig out a win today and did so.
The pressure on Rangers is mounting, and noone wants to go to Easter Road on a 'must win' basis.

If Rangers drop points tomorrow, the pressure gets more intense as they head into a packed fixture list with players tiring.

Come what may, Hibs will give Rangers a run for their money and are capable of taking something out the game...a Hibs win is far from inconceivable.

Sproule is wasted playing in the lower reaches in England and he'd cost us about £1m (if that) his wages would be 15k a week and he'd give us a genuine option of pace - something we are sadly lacking up front.

BTW, two big rumours - Bellamy wants to rejoin Celtic and is prepared to take a pay cut (he's already banked 9 million) Also Robbie Keane wants to join before he finishes his career - again he'd take a pay cut.

Also heard that Kevin Keegan is poised to bid for Alan Mad Dog McGrogor and Moyes is in for Cueller.

Heard a good solution to the SPL's fixture problem...a woman on the Radio tonight suggested the league increase in size to 14 clubs and they play each other twice so 26 games then they split into top six and bottom 8....the top six play each other twice = 36 games.

Also scrap the league cup for teams competing in Europe. This would free up a lot of time and help both Scotland's national team and scottish teams in Europe.

I don'y know why you keep going on about Bus Drivers. I have relatives who are Bus drivers funnily enough Rangers and Partick Thistle fans.

Be honest BTO, how many Scots do you see driving London Buses?????

Also I never did Uni etc to drive buses...own them yes but drive them no....

So anyway what's life like working in the japanese sewers?

"Be honest BTO, how many Scots do you see driving London Buses?????"

Tim has obviously mastered the art of identifying a bus driver as Scottish just by looking at him!

Damn fine skill.

Satisfying work.

You have to help people keep clean.

My sister once went out with a bus driver, so nothing against them.

Er no I travel on Public Transport in London quite a bit and most are West Indian or Asian or African - quite distinctly different from Scots. Don't you agree?

Silly question Brian. BE will listen to it on Radio and provide expert opinion as if he was the 4th official.

Daillyman.

Hello Brian. Being a wage slave, I can't get the time off at such short notice. If only I'd had faith and anticipated Rangers presence there a lot sooner. Tickets seem to be absurdly expensive as well, so I'll be a stay at home I'm afraid.

Tim.

It's a global village these days. The Scottish Afro-Caribbean community is a fast-expanding one. The Rastafarian "See You Jimmy" character is out there!

Bemused I had flights booked for the wife and I for May 9th for a 3 week holiday and a nephews wedding at Airth Castle. Had surgery last Thursday on my ligament and cartilage on the right knee. Doctor has told me not to fly and start therapy this Monday. So the wife goes by herself.

I now miss the Scottish Cup final, UEFA Cup final and the Gers clinching the league at Love St, oh yeah and the wedding. lol

Tell me about it? I am living in the most cosmopolitan part of the UK if not Europe. However once again I will say "How many bus drivers in London are Scots?" I bet very few. I have never come across ONE in 20 years of living here. I have come across a couple of scots train/tube drivers though.
