BARCELONA delegate Carlos Naval believes Steven Fletcher will be the one to watch when they travel to Edinburgh this summer – and admitted the Nou Camp side already have their eye on the Hibs striker.
The Catalan club will spend a week in Scotland as part of their pre-season training, just as they did last year.

This time, though, Barca will take on Hibs and Dundee United – they played Hearts 12 months ago – at Murrayfield on July 24 and at
Tannadice two days later.

The Spanish side's stars are the first to admit that they don't know much about the Scottish teams but it seems that Fletcher at least is beginning to make an impact on the continent.

Fletcher, pictured below, may be just 21 but is attracting attention from clubs in the Premiership and Championship in England and is already on Real Madrid's radar.

The Bernabeu side are set to whittle down a list of promising youngsters over the next few weeks and finally make a decision on who they want to bring to the club. But Barca team representative Naval admitted that they have also been keeping an eye on the prolific Hibs striker's progress in recent times.

Naval, who was in Scotland yesterday to cast his eye over the accommodation and training facilities which will be on offer to the Catalan stars next month, said: "I have heard about him and we have seen him play and if Real are interest then he is obviously a good player. I am not on the technical side of things so I don't know exactly what the coaching staff might think. We always look for gaps in the team to see where we can fill but it's not based on the rivalry or just because Real are also interested in the same player."

And Naval does not believe that it would be too difficult for a Scottish player to settle in Spain, insisting that, if someone has the talent required, they can be a success anywhere in the world. "Football is universal, so if a player is really good then he will be good no matter where he is playing, whether it is Spain, Italy or France. A good player will do well, no matter what," he explained.

The Barcelona players will spend a week at their St Andrews base and Naval was again delighted with the standard of facilities offered at the complex.

"The players will be training morning and afternoon and then will have a chance to relax in the evening. We worked very hard last year and as we all know pre-season is a very important time in preparing for a new challenge."

The club suffered a disappointing end to the season – losing out on the league title to Real and being knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United at the semi-finals stage – but Naval explained that he was used to such pressures at Barcelona.

"We set our standards high. It is not just the challenge from Real Madrid that we have to contend with, there is also Villarreal, Athletico Madrid and Valencia to think about." The Catalan side are likely to look elsewhere for their pre-season base next season, but Naval admitted that the Nou Camp outfit would love to come back to Scotland at some point in the future to face either side of the Old Firm as part of their pre-season schedule.

Barca beat both Rangers and Celtic in the Champions League last season and Naval added: "I would be happy with that – and if it was the same results as last time it would be perfect!

"We have the greatest respect for Rangers and Celtic but we do not fear playing anybody.

"The best time to do that would be the end of August because the Scottish season starts earlier than the Spanish season."

Not suggesting that fletcher will actually end up at barca or madrid (he's clearly not at that level) but does this not prove a point to some of the hearts fans who were crackin jokes about the fletcher-madrid link just a few days ago calling it a total piece of fiction and questioning fletchers ability?

#3 - I couldn't agree more. He's a decent player but he's not that good. If he did go to either Real or Barca, he would just be rammed in their reserves anyway.
Any Hibees who want to moan about this post - stop and think for a minute. If he's that good, why don't you want to keep him? doofus'

#3&4 I dont think anyones seriously saying fletcher is good enough for the madrid or barca first team right now, but obviously the scouts at these teams, who have far more experience in spoting a player than anyone posting on these threads, see something in fletch.

Clearly he would end up in the reserves or loaned to a smaller side but fletcher is still a young player who is developing and maturing, players of his age often end up out on loan, doesnt necessarily reflect on how good he could be. Again im not sayin he is now or necessarily ever will be good enough for these teams but guys with bags more experience in football than us obviously see something in him.

Hibs do want to keep him, their not going out flogging his name to any club half-interested, all the transfer talk has been aimed at hibs, not coming from them. also, if a player becomes too good for a certain level, he moves upwards, thats football - craig gordon a perfect example

Wouldn't have him in the Hearts team from what I've seen of him. Why Barrca are courting him god only knows, perhaps its just peewee trying to up the price this summer.

Last of the good youngesters we keep hearing about. Relegation for the hobos again next season me thinks.

Surely that's due to Elliott and Nade being so prolific?

Every young player is an the radar of big clubs, Barca and Real are great at playing the press, Barca have a friendly to help sell out, and Real have done nothing wrong in the Ronaldo fiasco.

"Relegation for the hobos again next season me thinks"

So I take it that will be us in Division 2 following your correct prediction of relegation this season?

This whole Fetcher to Real/Barca thing is much more to do with the two Spanish giants being fed up of paying top dollar for slightly over the hill 'superstars'. They are now looking at bringing in talented youngsters and grooming them for success. A bit like Arsenal seem to do.

Therefore, they are compiling a list of the most talented youngsters in Europe. A suspect this is a huge list and if you go to Croatia, Poland or any other European country there will be a 'Fletcherov' or a 'Fletcherski' who is being quoted as a target for Real/Barca.

However, the point is that Steven Fletcher should be mighty proud that he is apparently on the list and Hibs should be happy that their youth system has produced such a notable potential talent.

I doubt that Real or Barca will sign him and if they do it is obvious that he will not go straight into their first team. More likely one of their many feeder teams. Still, it is tremendous for Scottish football that our young talent is now being courted by the big clubs again.

#12 Mike D W,
A good post mate, although I think Steven Fletcher has been in the perfect position to see some of his old team mates careers hit a brick wall by moving on too soon. I don't think he would knock back any bid from the Spaniard's. I think you are right about them getting fed up paying over the odds for players. Still I bet Rod Petrie is having an organism thinking about Barca/Real getting into a bidding war for Fletch HA HA

Coming from a Jambo - good on the lad.

As for the numpty above - have you seen our strikers?

If (and i am saying if) it was to happen chances are they would sign him on a 5 year deal.

Now Real and Barca tend to loan 5-6 of their players to teams that are smaller than them but in the la liga (like a Wigan in the premiership).

What Hibs should do is negotiate a deal where he stays at hibs next season on loan and develop, the season after he would probably go on loan to one of these teams and develop further. Meaning he would be 23/24, have 2 more years experience, a year experience in Spain and 3 years left on his contract.

Can only be good for Scotland. Especially when you think that Man Unt are after Arfield at Falkirk, Chelsea and Liverpool are after McGarry (or whatever his name is) from Hamilton, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs(I think) are after the other lad from Hamilton and McCormack is wanted by Wigan. These guys should also try and get similar deals as mentioned above.

Now just get Boyd and Natsmith out of Rangers and down to the premiership, Brown and Kennedy out of Celtic and to the premiership, McFadden out the Championship and pretty soon we will be world beaters.

#17&18 I couldnt agree more, glad to see there are still some honest hearts fans still around. im more than happy to admitt that the likes of gordon was an excellent player when he was at tynecastle, kingstons a players i admire aswell. i cant understand why some hearts fans like #8 are so arrogant to think they know more about football than those employed to look at players at barca and madrid.

Should football fans be prevented from going to away games?
No it’s only a small minority who are violent and you’ll never stop it.
Yes, the hooliganism must be stamped out.
Maybe but really the police need more resources to tackle the thugs
