Chris Hogg numb over failed Euro bid

THE pain was etched deep into the face of Chris Hogg.
The stitches holding together a lip gashed by the flailing elbow of Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink hurt badly enough but it was finally seeing Hibs' UEFA Cup dream come to an end which was causing him the greatest distress.

"Numb," was the word Hogg used to sum up how he felt in the wake of a defeat at Celtic Park which, combined with Motherwell's win against Aberdeen the previous day, put third place in the SPL table outwith the reach of Mixu Paatelainen's players.

It was, perhaps, the inevitable outcome given that Hibs had been playing "catch up" with both Motherwell and Dundee United for the past few weeks following that disastrous spell last autumn which put a huge question mark against even a place in the top six.

But, nevertheless, that thought did little to comfort defender Hogg, who had been looking forward to a "winner takes all" showdown with the Fir Park outfit at Easter Road on the final day of the season.

And, instead of UEFA Cup football to look forward to, Hogg and his team-mates will now enjoy barely a month off before they return to prepare for an InterToto Cup clash with Torshavn of the Faroe Islands or, much more likely, Swedish side Elfsborgs, on the first weekend in July.

Even so, that brief period of respite will allow Paatelainen's players to reflect on just why they came up short in a season which appeared to promise so much – an unbeaten run of nine games seeing them briefly top the SPL.

That run may have caught everyone by surprise but what happened next shocked everyone at Easter Road, a miserable seven points out of a possible 36 sending Hibs spiralling down to eighth place, that dismal record compounded by the shock departure of boss John Collins.

The arrival of Paatelainen, however, coincided with a revival which brought renewed hope as Hibs again began to climb the table to the extent their UEFA Cup dream was rekindled only to be finally extinguished.

Today, however, Hogg admitted he and his team-mates had no-one to blame but themselves, saying: "At the moment it is really a feeling of numbness. We had a bit of light but now it is gone.

"We feel we are more than capable of finishing third and it just shows you about the league this season that we could hardly take a point for 12 or 13 games and yet we were still right in there.

"It's good we pulled ourselves back in to it, but if only we had been a bit more consistent."

"If only" are the two words which will probably be uttered repeatedly in the days to come but for the pragmatic Hogg it's the future which counts not what has already been consigned to the history books. Hogg, of course, was sidelined through injury as he watched Paatelainen's players surrender leads against both Dundee United and Aberdeen, leaking points which would have proved so valuable to their cause.

But, as he pointed out, those two results cannot be allowed to stand in isolation when reasons are sought. He said: "It was very frustrating to sit out those games and the match against Rangers. I'm not the greatest watcher of football when I am not in the team because I want to play in every game.

"I feel the boys did well but we were disappointed against Dundee United and then Aberdeen when we were ahead and should have seen the games out.

"We have had our chances but if you do not take them then you do not deserve third place.

"That run of games back in October, November and December killed our season even if we played ourselves back into things.

"A football club such as this cannot afford not to win for however long it was.

"I think we'd all regard the InterToto Cup as second prize but we have to take it, forget what we have not achieved and focus on what we want to achieve next season.

"I believe that every year you want to get better both on and off the field as a football club, but more importantly on it. It's all about improving.

"It's up to the manager to do what he wants during the summer but then we have to come back pre-season and prepare hard."

Those preparations will begin before June is out, Paatelainen convinced, as was former Hibs boss Tony Mowbray, that playing competitive games is more productive than a round of friendlies.

And if it means a shortened holiday, Hogg conceded that the thought of European football, although perhaps not on such a grand scale as the UEFA Cup, was something to look forward to.

He said: "It's a positive thing. I am sure the manager and the directors have looked into it and feel it is the right thing for the football club.

"It will provide us with two tough games and, if we get through, two more hard matches with the hope we can progress and make it into the UEFA Cup in any case."

Paatelainen also believes early competitive football will help the new signings he intends making – St Mirren's David Van Zanten (above left) is already committed to joining Hibs on a three year deal – settle in quickly at Easter Road.

He said: "It won't be our normal pre-season as we have to start early.

"The boys will have to look after themselves and come back fit but I am sure new players coming would want to start tomorrow or the day after they sign so there won't be any problems."

• HIBS' reserve side will complete their season by facing St Mirren at Love Street tomorrow with kick-off at 1pm.

Simple really Chris.

Hibs have an APPALLING away record - 8 wins in 50 games!

Mixu has only beaten Well from the teams above us including DUFC.

We overformed in the first quarter and collapsed in the second round of games.

Our manager left us. He also bought rubbish.

We sold anyone worth anything, apart from Fletcher.

Getting into Europe, taking the above into consideration, would have been a miracle.

#1 You'll be celebrating a fine end to the season. Down with the also-rans, playing in front of a half empty stadium, and hoping that the Mad one doesn't do a Gretna on you next season!!!

"The pain was etched deep into his face?" A bootprint should have been etched deep in his backside after Celtic 1st goal on Sunday.

The cross comes over. McManus and Hogg are together in the penalty area. When McManus heads the ball, Hogg is two yeards away with his back to McManus. He decided not to challenge, he walked away. That why we have lost so many games this season... a central defender who looks after himself rather than his team mates.

He's getting quite cute about this, leave it to others to get the blame. The Hogg lovers will miss everything and still think he's a class act.

6. Thats what the radio said as well, off getting treatment. How many times does JVH get away with that ? Just every game ?

Nice to see Donaldson eventually laying on a goal, pity it was for McDonald tho.

I made several posts in the week before the Celtic game pointing out that Hibs had to keep the Canning - Jones central defensive partnership going if only to put some height up against Vennigor of Hesselink. In these posts I pointed out that, having watched JVH all season, he continually jumps with his arms in the face/across the throat and on the back of the head of his opponent. He should have been at the least booked for the challenge on Hogg on Sunday and maybe a red card but the ref did not even give a foul. Ah, ha - the referees favouring the Old Firm again.

PP, I could suggest that if you had the inside of you mouth gashed and had just completed the insertion of 3 stitches with little anesthetic, you might also feel tentative in jumping against a big guy like McManus a minute or so after coming back onto the field of play. However, in this case, McManus actually stooped to head the ball which was a looped corner from Nakajema. He then headed it low through a ruck of players (mainly Hibs) past the unsighted keeper so not a great goal to lose.

I think that Mixu would have retained the Canning - Jones partnership if he had not been so worried about the right back position. It would have been too nervous a situation to have put Gattheussi back in there.

Utter rubbish!!

Think you will find it was Canning who was meant to be picking up McManus from the corner.

#8

So you are suggesting to break up the best centre half pairing outside of the old firm!!! Because Hibs have the best defensive record in the league outside the old firm with Hogg a massive part in that. The fans recognise this, hence player of the year and the players do, hence players player of the year. He spends half of matches covering for Jones who gets pulled here there and everywhere.

How on earth people who go to games regular basis cant see how good Hogg has been this season is incredible.

Go and watch the bbc highlights, quite clearly McManus backs off number 34, Martin Canning and scores.

Check your facts first.

#5 Private Prat - Hogg was voted player of the season by 'SUPPORTERS'. You obviously havent been near easter rd the last couple of years if you think he is a weak link.

I am not, generally, one of the Hogg detractors. I think he has measurably improved over the last 2 seasons and is still a young man. He is however prone to the odd daft moment and, for a central defender, is a bit on the small side to deal with very big forwards like JVH or (see the Hibs v Celtic Easter Road game) Samaras who outjumped him comprehensively to score the second Celtic goal. Over a season though, he is an excellent player.

Since Mixu's arrival Jones has been excellent defensively and would always be one of my first picks to build the team around. He has stopped his wandering too far forward chasing his immediate opponent and this has made the defence much more solid.

#13 Hogg is a much more rounded defender than Jones and can jump aswell so his height hasnt been a problem and im sure its not a problem for other small defenders. Cannanvaro for instance(no im not saying he is as good as his italian counterpart)

My point is you doing have to be a muscle bound lump to play centre half and Hogie has the brains and the defensive nonce so play there

Leither1875,

Dont not doing. DOH!!!

Neutral Observer,

Jones is definately not rounded! More tall and lanky I would say. But every defence benefits from a very tall 'stopper'. Look what Lee Wilkie has done for the Arabs for example. But the defender has to be mobile too against tricky small men like NcDonald at Celtic. I like Jones - not perfect but definately an improvement on some of the clowns we had in there before him. Also, when he is missing due to suspension or injury, he is definately missed.

I thought I told him to go to Ipswich!!

I knew that Hogg lovers would be on to this showing their blindness to the facts. Read tha last paragraph of my post at #5.

#11 I've just looked again and Mcmanus does not back off Hogg but rather positions himself to get to the ball. Or are you saying that in moving a metre away he ran away from Hogg. You see what I mean? Any excuse!

#12 Private Prat??? What a wicked sense of humour you
have.

#9 Why would Canning cover McManus when Hogg was there. Unless you are saying that Hogg is too small. Then we can agree on that at least.

There's more but I'm going out now.
