Published Date: 13 August 2008
A FOOTBALL casual who took part in organised battles with rival hooligans has been banned from every UK ground following an order by an Edinburgh court.
Paul Angus has been outlawed from attending games for the next three years and must surrender his passport when Hibs travel abroad.

The 20-year-old did not contest the move, which made him only the second person in the Lothians to be punished with a football banning order (FBO).

The order against Angus follows one taken out against Kevin Watt, who was the first to be hit with an FBO last summer. The pair were convicted together of being involved in a mass brawl at a railway station after a Hibs away match in Falkirk in 2006. A specialist police unit worked to gather intelligence against Angus before submitting a dossier of evidence to Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Unlike Watt, 19, the order against Angus was obtained without him being convicted of a football-related offence. Watt was slapped with his three-year order after he was charged with chanting racist abuse during a CIS cup semi-final at Tynecastle.

Hibs today welcomed the action taken against Angus, of Drum Crescent, Gilmerton, and pledged to help root out the "small minority" of hooligans.

Police chiefs also revealed that a "number of targets" among both Hibs and Hearts hooligans have been identified and intelligence is being gathered to hit them with FBOs.

Inspector Mike Bennett is the intelligence manager at the force's intelligence unit, which covers football-related disorder. He said: "We've been aware of the behaviour and activities of Angus going back to 2005. He was known to have been engaged in fighting before, during and after Hibs matches both home and away. These fights involved an element of co-ordination and pre-planning.

"Angus is the first person to be made the subject of an FBO on summary application, rather than through a court ruling upon conviction, after we submitted detailed intelligence dating back to 2005.

A number of "risk supporters" have been identified from both sides of the city and we're currently working to process more FBOs against them.

"The vast majority of fans are law-abiding with only a small group involved in causing trouble. It's arguable that they can be called fans at all. Many are simply using football as a cover and opportunity to be involved in violence."

The orders, introduced in 2006, can be imposed following a conviction for a football-related offence, while an FBO on summary application can be made based on evidence that the individual has been involved in disorder.

A Hibs FC spokeswoman said: "The individual concerned is one of a small minority who continue their attempts to tarnish the otherwise good record of Hibernian supporters.

"The club is fully supportive of the application made by Lothian and Borders Police and welcomes the outcome."

Angus and Watt, whose address was given as Pilton Park, pleaded guilty at Falkirk Sheriff Court in November 2006 to being part of a disorderly crowd, near Grahamston rail station, on February 11, that year.

The pair were fined £225 each for repeatedly trying to punch and kick two other men.

Anyone with information on football hooligans operating in the Lothians should contact police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

#13 Spot on, couldn't have said better myself. I imagine all these wee schemie saddos pose on bebo with their hoods up holding mummy's breadknife in one hand and a pop gun in the other. Football violence very rarely ever happens in stadiums so I imagine this wee soap dodger will simply make a mobile phone call to catch up on the fight either before or after the match or maybe both.
16

Pride Eh The Capital,

13/08/2008 12:37:03
13# Think what you will, but the majority of casuals are 19-40odd. The younger generations have youth groups that fight other youth groups, except CCS(Hibs) who have a baby crew who actually join up with CCS. Before you jumping to conclusions actually know what you talking about before jumping the gun.

Well, this is an advert for Embra Fitba now innit???

Leave the fighting to the fighters and the spectating to the spectators. The two should never have been mixed up in the first place...

Not that i mind a good swedge I just do it when I actually have a proper reason...
19

Pepper,

13/08/2008 12:42:57
Fair enough Wookie, I do actually agree with you and some of the more mature posters on this, these earlier comments come from people who really have no idea what it's all about or certainly was all about. I can guarantee every single one of them would have legged it if confronted by some of the stuff that was happening in the late 80's.

Thank you for pointing out the errors in my judgement..

I'm sure the 19 to 40 year olds who go out fighting are a real credit to society and their parents

Are the youth groups and baby crews supported by the Scottish Executive for the community work they do..

But since you guys are so hard why dont you join the legal fighting force called the army and fight real people - or are the defensiveless grannies who you terrorise about your limit...

But no doubt you will be correct and the 99% of the rest of Edinburgh who think you are just the equivelent of something they have stood in are wrong..

As I previously said...bunch of F#DS!!!

its a bit worrying that people can be hit with FBOs without being convicted ( have I read it correctly? ) the police are clueless and will just use this to cover their own ineptitude.

CCS? More like CC Blooms with Burberry clothing and shell suits chucked in for good measure. Maybe Hibs would have a better support if Saughton had all the Jakey Ned Heid The Ba's on day release.

Should football fans be prevented from going to away games?
No it’s only a small minority who are violent and you’ll never stop it.
Yes, the hooliganism must be stamped out.
Maybe but really the police need more resources to tackle the thugs
