Published Date: 05 July 2008
HIBS' InterToto Cup hopes were hanging by a thread tonight after they were beaten 2-0 by Swedish side IF Elfsborg at Easter Road.
Elfsborg, as expected from a side sitting second in the Allsvenskan, beaten just once in 12 matches, looked just too sharp for a Hibs side playing their first game of the season. Given the Swedish side have conceded just three goals in all those games, it's hard to imagine Mixu Paatelainen's side doing so in one match.

Emir Bajrami opened the scoring after just 17 minutes and although Elfsborg had opportunities to add to that lead, they had to wait until Andreas Augustsson's shot was deflected past Yves Ma-Kalambay in the 64th minute to ensure the tie was all but over ahead of next weekend's return leg in the Boras Arena.

There was a scare for Hibs within the opening three minutes, Daniel Mobaeck's darting run forcing Yves Ma-Kalambay t dive at his feet to prevent the Elfsborg midfielder scoring.

Hibs hit back, Steven Fletcher powering a header from a Dean Shiels' cross over before the Swedish side took the lead in the 17th minute. Dangerman Anders Svensson picked up Bajrami's run with a delightful pass delivered by the outside of his right boot. The angle was tight but Bajrami slotted the ball beyond Ma-Kalambay and into the far corner of the net.

Losing such an early goal was exactly what Hibs didn't want and it took a good tackle from skipper Rob Jones to halt Mobaeck as he threatened to waltz though the home defence.

But Hibs almost equalised in the 23rd minute thanks to great work from Shiels who provided an inviting cut-back for Filipe Morais to drive in a low shot which thumped off the outstretched left boot of Elfsborg goalkeeper Johan Wiland.

Elfsborg should have doubled their lead six minutes later with Svensson again the provider, chipping the ball beyond Jones for the inrushing Mobaeck who sliced his shot well wide.

However, as half-time approached it was Hibs who managed to mount a period of sustained pressure, Fletcher firing in a weak free-kick before Wiland took a rising shot from Shiels above his head and John Rankin sent a looping header over the bar.

Elfsborg resumed after the interval clearly intent on getting the second goal which would all but end the tie before next Saturday's return leg in Boras and they almost got it in the 51st minute as Denni Avdic got on the end of Bajrami's pass only to find his effort deflected wide by the backtracking Paul Hanlon.

Ma-Kalambay had to go down at the feet of Bajrami before Augustsson powered in a header which was nodded off his own line by Rankin who had been stationed at his goalkeeper's right-hand post.

Hibs hadn't overworked Wiland but the Swedish goalkeeper had to look sharp in getting down to his left to push away a low shot which was threatening to creep inside the post.

Hibs hopes were dealt a savage blow, however, when Elfsborg doubled their lead in the 64th minute, a goal which owed much to a huge slice of luck. Bajrami's low corner found Augustsson lurking at the edge of the penalty area and he fired in a show which appeared to take a deflection off a Hibs player as Ma-Kalambay was left flat-footed.

Avdic went close to making it three for Elfsborg in additional time, his low shot beating Ma-Kalambay but clipping the outside of the far post.

Hibs: Ma-Kalambay, Van Zanten, Hogg, Jones (Canning 46), Hanlon, Morais (Nish 71), Kerr (Chisholm 55), Murray, Rankin, Shiels, Fletcher. Subs not used: McNeil, Stevenson, O'Brien, Campbell.

IF Elfsborg: Wiland, Floren, Augustsson, Lucic, Karlsson, Andersson, Svensson, Mobaeck, Danielsson, Avdic, Bajrami (Ishizaki 73).Subs not used: Hassan, Sjoberg, Sjohage, Nordmark, Kurbegovic.

Referee: Albert Toussaint (Luxembourg).

Swedish League football is the worst I have seen, having seen a few good games, with the supposed top sides Helsinborg, Djugarden and Hammarby. This game backfired - pure and simple, but also exposes the limitations of the Scottish game. Mid season v pre season pie suppers - come on!!!

Why Mixu didn`t get the team back to pre season training a bit earlier, and arrange a couple of bounce games beforehand beggars belief! I will say it again that although Hearts are in a state, i still think that we will finish ahead of you lot this season! But thats not to say we will have a good season cause i know will not!! Will Murrayfield be big enough to hold the Hibs support for the Barca Game?

Long hard season ahead for the hoobs, maybe now the less intellectual amongst you may start to realise what we have been saying for long enough when you rear your heads each day on the Hearts threads...Mixu aint good enough, Isn't experienced enough...and your squad is poor, with the exception of maybe Fletcher, there are no great players in the Hibs squad, and if past is anything to go by there wont be any being added either, never mind, you have virtually no debt.....

I was at the game today, total gash, by half time they where all goosed, B Kerr looked goosed after warm up, oh yeah thats how he always looks and plays, although I don't think its right to jeer off one of our players, I did allow myself a little smirk when it happened.
Deano & Fletch looked like the only ones interested at times, still, bring on Barca & the league.

I am looking forward to the new season, don't let this result fool you, Elfsborg are a team going 12 games unbeaten, losing only 3 goals in the process, at this stage in the season its only to be expected with fitness levels etc, how are the sack races and star jumps going by the way? We will be ready for the start of the season with hopefully a few new faces arriving soon.

Better luck in the return hobos,
Petie and farmer will reduce the players wages further if they don't overcome us and get a money spinning lucrative sell out in the next round, ah well who am i kidding still sure a £100,000 is being put together for the next big signing.

Kjell sends his regards. You remember Kjell, star striker for Dundee Utd and played against the hobos quite a few times. He sends his love and hopes that there aren't any hard feelings.

see you all soon, or maybe 20 or so!

Neutral Observer,

No exactly the result Hibs fans were hoping for, but Elfsborg are a very compact team and have some excellent players. The Hibs squad is weak in the midfield, escecially without Zemmama. I think that Mixu gave Brian Kerr a chance today, but honestly, as most Hibs fans recognise, he is never going to perform at the level we need in midfield. Young Chisholm was much more energetic and an improvement when he came on. At least he wants the ball, unlike Kerr who tries to get rid of it asap with non creative passes.

Mixu is trying to vindicate the purchase of Rankin but this guy is way below average and leaves huge holes in the Hibs midfield. Any good peformamces?

Van Zantan - promising first half, exposed at the first goal. Tired in second half.

Shiels - this guy is going to have a good season.

Fletcher had a good first half without much support.

Ian Murray - solid shift but not a creative player. Little support from Rankin and Kerr in midfield left him too much to do.

So what to do Mixu? Sign at least one decent midfield playmaker (in the mould of Svenson would do!!). Ditch Kerr and overcome his talent blindness re Rankin. Get Zemmama fit and keep him so. Sign an experienced left back until the promising Hanlon is fully ready. Get the squad fit enough to last 90 minutes!

Good grief. What an embarrassment from Scotland's best run club - you know, the one poised to become the third force in Scottish football, the one with the conveyor belt of supreme talent, the one playing all the good football.

Instead it's second rate players replacing good ones, a board who misleads fans by saying they'll bring in better players than the ones they've got, rubbish football, fans booing players before the season's even started... are Hibs the new Hearts, except with a manager and piles of cash in the kitty so with fewer excuses?

At least Jambos continue supporting the team on the park by actually going to games when things are going badly. An awful lot of Hibees have been so wrapped up in what's happening at Tynecastle, they've failed to notice their own team has been declining rapidly.

Ah well it's not like they built themselves up for a fall. Oh...
35

Warrnambool Hibee,

Oz 07/07/2008 00:06:33
Just watched the highlights and must admit it was about as good as I expected. Two weeks of pre-season fitness training, no practice matches, no replacement signing for Boozy, no Zemmama and playing a half-decent team in the middle of their season.

We looked un-organised and tired.... what do you expect two weeks into pre-season. I think playing competitive Intertoto matches has merit, however I question what it does for morale and our reputation playing European football so unprepared. Let's see if we are any better next week!
36

Neutral Observer,

#34 George Cowie or Walter Kidd or Ernie Winchester

Actually, given the facts laid out by #35 in his first paragraph, the result was inevitable, if not the performance. If Scottish teams are to enter the UEFA cup in the very early rounds (as from next season) then a reappraisal of the start and end of the season will be necessary if failure is to be avoided. We can point to the hammering that Celtic got from Artmedia Bratislava 3 seasons ago when they had to play a champions league qualifier before they were fully tuned up as a prime example of the disadvantage of a very early start.

But, other than that, Hibs need to make some suitable signings to improve the team. That is recognised by the management and hopefully the right players will be found.

While you may try to gloat at this predictable reverse Mr Cowie, Kidd or Winchester, don't use the winchester to shoot yourself in the foot. Hearts have a long way to go to achieve credibility this coming season!

#30 Shocker

What did Mixu think? Have a look at the following website:

http://www.sportinglife.com/football/scottishpremier/news/

Regarding whether Hibs would benefit from £4.0 million for Steven Fletcher, other than getting the money for the new stand, what would they doi with it? Possibly the purchase of 3 suitable players for half a million each would be about the best they could do as there is always the problem of bigger money purchases needing bigger wages and that would not fit with the strategy of conservative wages that fit with the operating budget.

So we need to find hidden gems and integrate them into the team until the next generation of Whittaker, Thomson, Brown, Riordan and O'Connor come along. In the 70's we had Stanton, Blackley, Edwards, O'Rourke, Cropley, Gordon and Duncan and we need that quality again or the support that has grown to a 5 figure base will dwindle.

#30 Shocker

And before I forget - there was also Brownlie and Schaedler in that golden era in the 70's.
39

Warrnambool Hibee,

07/07/2008 00:58:35
Unfortunately those hidden gems are very hit and miss. Note: Boozy v Noubissie, Sproule v Donaldson, Shiels v Kerr

Normally I would be saying $4mil for Fletcher, lets take it, get our stand built, dept gone and we can finally start looking forward. But at the moment he's one of the few shining lights we have, could be in a whole lot of strife if we lose him also.

40

Warrnambool Hibee,

07/07/2008 01:26:02
Even the half million pound players are hit and miss in the current market... not that I'd be saying no to a couple of signings in that price bracket.

I liked the look of Hanlon and Chisholm from yesterdays game, I think they will develop into good players for us. However, we are desperately in need of some inspiration, a play maker or two, we need Benji and Zemmama fit and with their heads screwed on right. We miss Boozy and Murphy who could build momentum from the back and create something from nothing.
41

Neutral Observer,

07/07/2008 01:42:36
#40 Warmjambo (sorry!)

Good comments. Yantorno is mentioned on the other story (Scotsman) and that's a promising possible signing.

Yes, the hidden gems are hit and miss. But experienced players with a track record are less of a risk. Mowbray did bring in a couple of turkeys too but generally he could spot a player. Collins and Craig obviously could not. So far I am unsure of Mixu's ability as he has brought in:

Rankin - weak and below average
Zarabi - seen on video and erratic
Nish - not used properly
Van Zanten - could be OK on today's first half evidence
Canning - squad player at best
42

Warrnambool Hibee,

07/07/2008 02:58:09
Rankin, Nish, Van Zanten and Canning will all do ok, but only that, ok. I can't see any of them lighting the park on fire, I really only see them all as squad players. You can only carry so many squad players without a few quality guys to make the team tick. At the moment Mixu is not doing great at keeping to his philosophy of Quality not Quantity. I'd prefer to see two quality players come in rather than another five squad players.

We really missed McCann ,Stevenson Zemma and Benji who are all automatic picks in my book.
Having Canning, Hogg, Murray, Van Zanten, Jones on the pitch at the same time is ludicrous!
Really lacked creativity and it's no wonder really.

POSTED LAST NIGHT WHEN COLD WET AND ANGRY...STILL ANGRY.
Lets get one thing out of the way immediately. This Hibs performance was not down to lack of match fitness. It was entirely down to a manager who does not understand how to set up a side. Who will not pick players who can make a difference. Who cannot make tactical changes during a game. The prospect of the coming season does not thrill me at all. Mixu should apologise to ALL the Hibs fans for that display. Not just the ones who turned up to get soaked both by the weather and the Club.

Mixu probaby knocked a couple of thousand off the crowd with his pre-match comments. He did them a favour.

HOGGWATCH.
For his first trick this season Hogg sent Van Zanten up to cover (the ball was about 30 yards out)and did not cover the gap. Their first goal was made easy and was entirely Hoggs fault. Now I don't want the Hogglovers coming on here denying this because its what happened. FACT.

Mixu has to stop telling us lies about Benji. There is no way Benji is too tired to play football. What happened to O'Brien and Donaldson. The game was crying out for some fast players.

Lastly, I used to think like most others that Fletcher should stay at least another year and learn a bit more. I've now changed my mind. He isn't going to learn anything with this lot round him and, for his sake, he should get away as soon as a offer comes in that's right for him.

I'm off to the pub now where, after a couple, I can dream that some club has come in for Hogg. FAT CHANCE.

If things are still the same in 9 months then I will back calls for Mixu's head, but for the moment lets see if he an create his team and that may involve getting rid of some of Collins' duds first.
