Hibs 0-0 Rangers: Both teams frustrated with no-score draw

HIBS' hopes of overhauling Motherwell for third place and a UEFA Cup place were dented by this goal-less draw at Easter Road.
Motherwell remain a point ahead of Hibs and Dundee United with two games in hand but Hibs, who travel to Parkhead next Sunday, host the Steelmen in the last game of the season.

UEFA Cup finalists Rangers also suffered a blow to their SPL title hopes as they could not find a way past the Leith defence although striker Daniel Cousin had a second-half goal ruled out for offside.

After reaching their first European final in 36 years with a penalty shoot-out win over Fiorentina in Florence on Thursday, the Govan club found it just too much to return to their title challenge.

And although they cut Celtic's lead over them to seven points they have only three games in hand over the Parkhead club who, with the Ibrox club's fixture congestion, must feel they have a genuine chance of retaining the title.

As both sides took time to settle, Hibs midfielder Filipe Morais cut open the Ibrox defence in the third minute after receiving a Steven Fletcher pass.

However, Dean Shiels, darting through on goal with only Rangers keeper Neil Alexander to beat, was ruled offside although television evidence appeared to contradict the decision.

In the 15th minute, in the midst of a mostly midfield battle, Kevin McCann was robbed by Nacho Novo just outside the Hibs box but the Easter Road full-back recovered his mistake with a saving tackle as the Spaniard shaped to send in an angled shot.

The first half warmed up as it neared its conclusion.

In the 36th minute, following a Steven Davis corner, Hibs keeper Andrew McNeil made a fine save from Carlos Cuellar's header which looked to be heading in to the bottom left hand corner.

Moments later, as the visitors stepped up their quest for the opener, Hibs stopper Rob Jones threw himself to block a Novo shot with his leg at the expense of yet another corner but the Easter Road side survived.

In the final minute, Shiels' whipped-in cross from wide on the left was punched by Alexander on to the head of the in-coming Ross Campbell but the ball rebounded up over the bar.

An exciting end to the first half promised an improvement after the break and there was a sense of urgency from Rangers especially after the restart.

After latching on to a back-header by Cousin, Novo skinned McCann on the bye-line with some ease but his toe-poked cross was cut out at the front post by McNeil.

The Ibrox side kept pressing and in the 53rd minute Cousin had the ball in the net from close range after latching on to a Cuellar header but the flag went up for offside.

Moments later, Light Blues skipper Barry Ferguson had an angled-shot blocked by the knees of McNeil for a corner and again Hibs emerged unscathed.

The pressure mounted on the Easter Road goal. Kirk Broadfoot's long throw-in from the right was flicked on by Cousin but the ball sped across the goalmouth with no Rangers player in sight.

In the 61st minute Hibs responded with a Morais shot from 25 yards which had Alexander scrambling to tip the ball over for a corner.

A note of desperation became apparent in the Ibrox side's attacks and as they threw men forward, they left themselves susceptible to the counter-attack and Hibs looked more than capable of taking advantage.

In the 76th minute, as Rangers stepped up their bid for the opener, prolific striker Kris Boyd was thrown on for Papac but he struggled to get in to the game.

A Kevin Thomson free-kick from 25 yards sneaked past McNeil's left-hand post and Cuellar headed a Christian Dailly free-kick over with the Hibs keeper in no-man's land.

There were a few more escapes for the Easter Road side but Rangers trooped off knowing they had failed to take advantage of one of their games in hand.

#1 - Agree to an extent. Not sure what the issues are surrounding Benji, but I was looking to see him playing today.

With regard to Campbell - Young laddie with a big future. Didn't do too badly today, certainly came onto his game. Good experience for the boy.

All in all, a decent performance given the player shortages. Looked good at the back, Murray and Canning both superb again. Still lack in the midfield though - got to be a priority in the summer, along with full backs.

The bottom line is though, that we're still in the hunt. Maximum support required for Mixu and the boys in the next two games please!

Finally - Decent referee today. Refused to be fooled by Novo's desperate diving and took good control of the game. Well done (for a change).

No doubt the ref will be dragged in front of the whistleblower website to explain why he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity by Dean Shiels in the 3rd minute? Aye, right ye are.

Mike McCurry can over rule linesmen when he feels the wrong offside decision has been made.

I believe rangers players refused to leave the field as they demanded a penalty shoot out. Hahahaha.

What is that now, 4 wins in the last 15 in and 6 out of 7 required.........don't think so.

3 in a row is coming.

"No doubt the ref will be dragged in front of the whistleblower website to explain why he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity by Dean Shiels in the 3rd minute?" (3)

A dubious offside that might have led to something significant and might not? Rangers have had plenty of those this seasson.

"Mike McCurry can over rule linesmen"

He didn't actually. He stuck by his own original decision.

It's still in Rangers' hands.

A dismal game, and one that can only hearten Celtic fans.

The worst aspects for me were the lack of urgency from the team (do we have a captain?!!), and the long long long wait for substitutions, only to find Boyd replacing one of our better performers, then JCD coming on with FIVE minutes to spare (replacing our target man up front).

If Walter deserves plaudits for the Firoentina game, he deserves berating for this one -- a poor poor game, with the only plus being that the ref for this domestic match at last had no standing orders to do everything he could to help our opponents; he was equally as inept for both sides.

I'd normally take a point at Easter Road, but we really could have used all three today with the SPL race being so close.

Still a position that other teams could only dream of being in, though.

CIS Cup already won.

Victory over Zenit will win us the UEFA Cup.

Victory over QoS will win us the Scottish Cup.

Win all 5 remaining SPL matches, and we definitely win that, too. Indeed, there is a realistic chance that we can afford another slip-up in the league and still win the title.

A long, long time since a Scottish club had a season like this, and it will be a long, long time before it happens again.

Saintly Scotts' offsides which stood against Falkirk and Gers to win the 3 points, the Dons late leveller which was cancelled to win 3 points and of course Mukas tackle that never was never mind foul. Nice to see you taking the caps lock off, my little Spanish inquisitor.

Now, make a wee note to yourself: Some capitals are still required, ie, at the beginning of sentences, and at the start of proper nouns such as players' names etc. The occasional full-stop, question-mark etc would also make reading your drivel just that little bit more enjoyable (though on second thoughts, it's hardly worth it).

As for your "one more slip" theory? Not technically correct. Two wins for Celtic, against 4 wins and a draw for Rangers, would leave the points totals equal, but with Rangers winning more games than Celtic over that period, you would expect the goal difference to narrow, or perhaps even swing slightly in Rangers favour.

Don't worry. You'll make an intelligent post someday. But I wouldn't advise anybody to hold his breath.

So, these are the choices:

1 ) You have 2 games left - you MUST win both
OR
2 ) You have 5 games left - you MUST win them all ( even one draw loses the league on goal difference )

In fact, if Rangers don't get victories against both Motherwell and Dundee United, Celtic could celebrate 3-in-a-row against Hibs next Sunday. Crazy prospect a few weeks ago !

Suddenly the light at the end of the tunnel is shining rather brightly.

Under my skin, Spaniard?

In your dreams, I'm afraid.

You see, that's the trouble with trying to assess someone's emotions from words on a screen. Any expert worth his salt will confirm that by far the most significant form of communication is body language, followed by tone of voice, both of which are invisible/inaudible on a forum like this. The actual words trail in a very poor third, so to assume anything on the stength of them is to risk making yourself look very silly.

Now, a nice wee quiz that even you can attempt:

Team A "might" win the SPL.

Team B "might" win the SPL, have already won the CIS Cup, are near certainties to win the Scottish Cup, and are in the UEFA Cup Final.

Which team has had the better season?

Sorry, spaniard, it's "Team B", and you know it.

The Champions League that you speak of is next season. A season is a complete entity in itself, and is judged on the relative success of competing teams within that season, not on seasons that went before or will come later.

Rangers and Celtic have fifty-odd and forty-odd League championships respectively. Winning it is a commonplace occurence for both teams, and carries no resonance throughout Europe, where the Scottish League is perceived as sub-standard.

The UEFA Cup is the second most important club trophy in European football, and has never been won by a Scottish club, so is a FAR bigger deal.

Tough truth, but live with it.

Thank you Tellitasitis.

I agree with you about the "tetchiness". I was merely toying with a poster who likes to come on here and name-check me, even when I'm not here, and deludes himself into thinking that he's upsetting me.

As I said earlier elsewhere, many esteemed football journalists asserted that Celtic's achievement in reaching the UEFA Final in 2003 was more worthy than Rangers treble the same season, yet there are some here who want to suggest that Celtic edging the SPL this season would somehow constitute more success than Rangers reaching the UEFA Final (and maybe winning it), as well as almost certainly winning both domestic cups.

I'm all for posters fighting their team's corner, but I do advise against adopting a view that simply makes you look terminally stupid/biased (delete as necessary)

If Celtic were to win the league, and with rangers losing their bottle it is a definite possibility, of course they would be team of the season. The only reason that rangers are in the UEFA Cup is because they couldn't qualify from their CL group, it is therefore, by definition, a consolation prize! The best forward line, best goalkeeper and best defence awarded to rangers by some idiot above is just not reflected by the league table. How can rangers have the best forward line and best defence when Celtic have scored more and conceded less. I just don't understand the logic!

Okay TTH.

Let's explore this.

Celtic entered the UEFA Cup in 2002/03 as a "consolation prize" because they lost a CL qualifier after winning the SPL in 2001/02.

So, by your definition, they weren't good enough for the CL, and their UEFA exploits were unimportant.

Further to that, Rangers winning the treble that season meant that they were undoubtedly, by YOUR own criteria, the "team of the season"!

Can't see too many Celtic fans agreeing with you!

You are absolutely precious.

I think that I understand you now.

Celtic making the CL last 16 this season and last season made them "officially" (your words in a previous exchange) one of the top 16 clubs in Europe, but Rangers doing the same the season before DIDN'T make them one of the top 16.

Meanwhile, Celtic making the UEFA Cup final in 2002/03 was a great achievement which overshadowed Rangers domestic success that same season, but Rangers doing the same this season (and perhaps winning it) wouldn't overshadow Celtic narrowly winning the SPL.

What a reasonable and consistent standpoint!

Never mind. If and when RFC win all four trophies in a few weeks time, you can still come back on here and explain how it is still Celtic's season!

Loving it.

Capitals again! Must be angry. Do you turn green and pop the buttons on your shirt?

The answer was in post 40. You just have to know where to look.

OK, no more point scoring. Call it a draw (although we really won)

No mistake.

The answer is in #40.

The world is watching? I reckon very few people are watching, personally, and even fewer are interested.

Where is TTH?

Come on, humour me. Two really simple questions.

Does making the last 16 of the CL make you one of the best 16 teams in Europe?

And...

Is winning the SPL a greater achievement than reaching the UEFA Cup Final?

No "ifs" or "buts", just two very simple "Yes" or "No" questions.

Even you can have a go if you like, Spanish bhoy.

Thank you Maxwell.

So, Rangers winning the SPL in 2003 was a greater achievement than Celtic reaching the UEFA Cup final that same season, and Rangers reaching the CL last 16 in 2005/06 made them one of the best 16 teams in Europe that season.

Yes?

Maxwell.

Many thanks.

Just to clarify. In 2005/06, Rangers, by virtue of reaching the CL last 16, were one of the 16 best teams in Europe, yet Celtic, who won the SPL in a canter that season, weren't one of the best 16, so, by definition, were inferior to Rangers?

It's not that simple and you know it, you complete ar5e. Celtic made the last 16 of the CL, if they win the league in my opinion that would make them more successful than rangers this season. In 02/03 rangers did nothing in Europe, so the comparison between the two is not that easy.

How would you judge who the top 16 teams are in any particular season? The only way to judge it would be based on Europe's premier competition. The diddy cup would not even come into the equation! FACT: rangers qualified for the UEFA Cup because they were not good enough in the CL!

I'm starting to worry about you. Physically the Rangers players looked good. What was that earlier comment you made? McDonald looks good in his boxers shorts.

Is that what you call the finer points that you keep your eyes open for.

Rangers doing nothing in Europe that season is irrelevant. The fact is that you made an unqualified statement, which was that if you make the CL last 16, you ARE one of the best 16 teams in Europe. I don't agree with the staement, and I think that the idea that a poor Rangers side in 2005/06 was one of the best 16 teams in Europe is frankly, laughable.

But, it's your assertion, not mine.

Your assertion that the teams that reach the last 16 are not the best 16 teams in Europe is unqualified too.

Now, answer me this, how should the top 16 teams in Europe in any given season be judged, in your opinion?

No fears to hide, my friend. I'm an old man, I've lived through many Celtic title triumphs, and one more won't hurt me.

I want my team to win the SPL, of course, but I've seen it many, many times, and I'd get a much bigger kick out of them winning the UEFA Cup, their first European trophy of my adult life, and a trophy that no Scottish club has ever won.

I have every confidence that I will witness RFC winning many league titles in the future (and CFC), but I may never realistically witness them in a European final again.

An enquiry.

Do the bookies still offer reasonable odds on a correct score of 0-0 in games involving Rangers?
