HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today insisted Lewis Stevenson can rediscover the form which made him such a huge hit at Easter Road.
The little midfielder burst on to the scene two years ago under Tony Mowbray before becoming a major star under former boss John Collins.

But, after suffering a dip in form and confidence, Stevenson managed to feature in just four games under Paat
elainen last season.

However, he is still just 20 years of age and Paatelainen believes that there is much more to come from the player.

The Hibs manager said: "Lewis Stevenson is a fantastic footballer. He has got a good attitude and a lot of potential.

"We've got to remember that he is still just a young boy. He broke into the first team when he was young and he still is young.

"He didn't play an awful lot of football towards the second half of last season and he was disappointed with that.

"But hopefully we will see the best of him this season and he will be much more involved than he was last time round."

Stevenson is one of the players at Paatelainen's disposal for Thursday's friendly match with Barcelona and the Hibs manager revealed that, Abdessalam Benjelloun and Ross Campbell aside, he should have a full squad to choose from.

The Easter Road side take on Montrose tonight, Barcelona on Thursday night and Cowdenbeath on Monday night.

Hibs are likely to field some fringe players tonight and on Monday, but Paatelainen insisted that the Scottish Football league teams deserve just as much respect as the La Liga stars.

He continued: "We have got quite a range of opponents over the next few days, but they are all matches that will help us to continue to improve our fitness levels.

"Obviously the players are looking forward to the Barcelona game immensely because it is a chance to test themselves against some of the best players in the world. It will be a big game for everyone involved and it will be interesting to see how we cope with it.

"However, the games against Montrose and Cowdenbeath are also important for us because we know that they will give us a difficult time and they have got a lot of good youngsters on their books.

"A lot of the players at these clubs will be looking forward to playing us and it will be a bit like a cup final for them.

"We know that they will give everything that they have got – you only have to look at the result between Peterhead and Aberdeen to know that.

"It maybe won't be our first eleven against Montrose and Cowdenbeath but it will be a strong side and I am sure they will be good tests for us."

Lewis' problem is he's a left-sided midfielder, and after we brought in the invisible man, Rankin, he was always going to get in ahead of Lewis.

I'd certainly play him ahead of Rankin as well as working hard to continue his development. Unfortunately, IMO, him and McCann have both gone backwards under Mixu. Petrie must be raging - when Fletcher's gone there'll be no one else to sell and Lewis looked like he might be a player when JC first picked him.

Have to agree with your comparison of Stevenson v Rankin. So far Rankin has shown very little. He is weak in the tackle and cannot retain the ball. I think he has been watching Brian Kerr and adopted his style of 'give me the ball and I will give it right back to you, even if you are surrounded by opponents'.

Actually it was under TM that Lewis first started to look good, but agreed that Collins played him often and that built his confidence.

1 & 2- are there any of mixu's signings who you rate?

#3 Dr.

Not really!! Apart from Ian Murray that we alrady knew was a solid player.

Rankin - shows little so far.

Nish - will be useful if he gets his act back up to standard of his first few games.

van Zanten - too early to comment. Looked ok in first Elfsberg game in first half. Not fully fit yet in my opinion.

Canning - solid enough cover centre half

I think that's why Mixu is taking his time to ensure that he brings in better players than what we have currently. If he cannot find them then its better to work with what he has after clearing some of Collins' poor signings out.

No Benji again! What is it this time? Away to the Olympics or out injured? It's about time he started paying his way as we saw little of him last season through 'injury' yet he still managed to put in appearances for Morocco.

Funny thing is I remember Collins saying he wouldn't be bringing in players just to make up the numbers. If they weren't better than we had then he wouldn't sign them. You only have to see the dross he left behind to see how well he can judge a player!

#3 in a word, NO. And I don't rate the man himself either tbh.

#6 "You only have to see the dross he left behind to see how well he can judge a player". Agreed and this was ultimately his downfall, Petrie stopped letting him sign players IMO... you only had to see who he'd signed - Alan O'Brien anyone? - to see he and Tommy didn't have a clue.

Agreed and yet Mixu is talking O'Brien up now and it seems that we are going to be inflicted with him this coming season. Maybe, like Benji, he will pick up another injuty and disappear again other than the occasional tepid warm up from the subs bench.

No matter what people are saying about Benji, he is the only player we have that can score goals....Mixu seems to have a problem with him. As for Colin nish and one leg Fletcher they haven`t got a clue about scoring goals as seen by the last 3 games, have been watching Hibs for over 40yrs and the only person missing from our team is Snow White as we seem to have a team of dwarfs playing in midfield who are unable to win any high balls or tackles.
Surely Mixu must have some contacts back home to find players who are better than the players we have just now.
If we are only going to get players from St Mirren and Gretna rejects what do you expect, Petrie in my books is the main culprit and should take full responibilty
for the decimation of Hibs with his penny pinching ideals.

#9 I beg to differ Benji is not the only player that we have that can score goals (Fletcher was leading scorer along with Shiels, Zemmama, Nish getting a few and Benji with one solitary goal last season.

Benji is on his day a hugely talented player and can be massively influential and score some good goals.

However the downside is that if he cant be bothered he is lazy and a waste of space and largely frustrating (as he was last season) he scored more goals for Morocco recently in World Cup Qualifiers than he did all season.

Hibernia,

#9 should also point out that we are all ranting on about getting replacements for the dross that Collins signed. Unfortunately we have to try and get rid of that dross first if Mixu wants to free up any wages.

Lets be realistic but who in their right mind is going to come along and say I want to sign Zibi, Brian Kerr, Gathuessi, Donaldson..........especially if they have watched them playing over the past while for Hibs???

#11 and you will be one of the boys that want the jambos to get their heads out of the sand

what a lot of sh1t3 why should we have to put up with this cr4p. why should we be contunually trying to bring in 2nd & 3rd rate replacements for decent players ... what kind of way is that to run anything ?? how can we possibly counter the ''wee team'' barbs, when we have to watch this p1$h.

it quite simply is nowhere near good enough and its about time folk like you stopped supporting Petries view of how to run a football club.... although judging by the tickets sales, a lot of pepople are unhappy

cabbage&ribs,

wise words stanton4, the playing side of the club is suffering because of petrie and the boards obsession with making money and getting their kicks looking at the healthy bank balance and not investing in the team, which is the main part of any football club. in car terms, we have sold too many BMW'S and replaced them with vauxhall vivas.

#10 although we have only played 3 games to date this pre season can you tell me how many attempts on goal we`ve had, lm sick to death of playing one up front and having no midfielders going forward to help the lone striker.....if you are happy with those tactics and Mixu sitting on his ars* while we get ripped apart by teams who are no better than us you should go and follow the scum from gorgie.

think hes a decent player but i cant see him winning us games. hes not good enough or strong enough 2 play a defensive midfeild role wich i think murray would be perfect for.

dnt think ive been this disheartened about a season starting in my life. think its a total disgrace that hibs havnt even been linked to any players, petrie and the rest of those muppets behind the scenes are taking us all for a ride. who cares bout talk of a new stand, after the amount of players that have walked out the door and the amount of rubbish we have on the pay roll at ER i think us fans are due a few half decent players.

I regard myself like many of us as a " diehard hibby " but I am not going to this " circus " game and it annoys me that Hibs were stupid enough to take it on. It`s already been done by our pathetic neighbours, it`s at a rugby ground, a football minded board would have told Barca that they`ll get nowhere near 57,000 this time round so come to ER. If I wanted to fork out £30 at this time I would put it towards a cup top up ticket - I go to the fitba` to see Hibs not the opposition whoever it may be. Finally, they dress this game up as a " charity " game - well take about 1% of all the Barca players` annual salaries and that should be enough to wipe out most third world countries` debt.

Plantagenet,

17. As one of your pathetic neighbours I attended the Hearts v Barcelona game last year, what a waste of money. Barcelona never got out of 1st gear, they camped in the middle of the park and played neat little passing moves not allowing the lesser talented Hearts boys a kick at the ball. Occasionally they would surge up the park and score a goal at will but obviously they did not want to humiliate their hosts by reaching double figures. It was not the Barcelona that I wanted to see, I felt robbed so if I were you I would get a bottle of wine and settle down for the evening with your copy of the 'Hibs Greats' book and pine for the past glory days.

I've been told Hearts will be represented at the game hibs versus barca,
they are there to watch barca keeper
two barca midfielders an a forward,
so the promises have come true, world cup stars at tynecastle,

All is forgiven mr Romanov family,

#19, if you were playing for Barcalona, would you even consider signing for Hearts??????????, even if Barca didn't want you, would you really consider going to Tynecastle???????

Tad bit early to be forgiving the Mad Vlad

#12 Im well aware that what we have playing wise is not up to standard but for crying out loud we know exactly what Petrie is like and he is not going to hand out the cash at the moment until Mixu gets rid of some of the dross that is there.

I fully agree we should be watching better, but the matter of fact is that we are not going to be seeing many more Latapy's or Sauzee's running around in Hibs colours.

As for your comments about me wanting the Jambos taking their heads out the sand!! I couldnt care less what their club does I am a Hibs fan end of and no other club conerns me.
23

Hibernia,

#14 where did I say I was happy with the tactics or formation, I just simply pointed out that with your earlier comment that Benji wasnt the only goalscorer at the club.

I personally feel the team is totally different with Zemmama in it yet he gets berated by many sections inside ER and if Benji is on form as I pointed out earlier he can be unplayable.

However we do have other players capable if scoring like Fletcher who got 14, Shiels who got 11, Zemmama had 6 before he got injured and even Nish bagged 4 or 5 after his transfer. Crikey even Curier scored 4 or 5 before Mixu punted him and Donaldson scored 6 too.

So instead of having a dig just read my comments and maybe accept your original comment wasnt particularly correct and if you are that flaming unhappy that you go watch some other team, whereas I will be there at my seat trying to encourage them at Easter Road.

We should try Lewis left middle, he has a good engine and could be a good foil alongside Murray as the holding player.

Should football fans be prevented from going to away games?
No it’s only a small minority who are violent and you’ll never stop it.
Yes, the hooliganism must be stamped out.
Maybe but really the police need more resources to tackle the thugs
