HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today backed calls for goal-line technology after a controversial clearance by Easter Road star Ross Chisholm left Rangers' SPL title hopes in the balance.
The midfielder was on the line to hook away a net-bound effort from Ibrox striker Nacho Novo, who later cancelled out Derek Riordan's opener, to leave Rangers incensed at assistant referee Martin Cryans' refusal to award a goal. Chisholm was adamant it hadn't crossed the line and television pictures proved to be inconclusive with Paatelainen claiming the whole ball wasn't over.

However, today, while praising Cryans for getting the decision right, Paatelainen admitted the time was right to use technology in such circumstances.

He said: "I'm all for it. I think technology should be used in football. We have advanced from the days when there was no television and no cameras, now we have it so why not use it?"

While television couldn't provide a definitive answer last night, Paatelainen believes miniature cameras embedded in the goal frame could be one answer, although he insisted the question was one for football's authorities to resolve.

Admitting that, like Rangers manager Walter Smith, he'd probably have felt his side had scored had the incident happened at the other end, Paatelainen said: "It was impossible to say from where I was but I have seen it on television and I don't feel the whole ball was over the line. The linesman was in the correct position and deserves credit by being firm and doing his job right."

The 1-1 draw leaves Rangers level on points with Celtic, although Gordon Strachan's side have a two-goal advantage as they prepare to head to Easter Road on Sunday with Paatelainen promising they can expect the same reception as their Old Firm rivals.

He said: "I'll be looking for more of the same, we are not trying to do any favours to anyone, we are just looking after ourselves and trying to do as well as we can.

"It will be another difficult match, Celtic will come having rested for quite a few days."

Taking a first point of the season from Rangers gave Paatelainen some comfort, although he was disappointed not to have held on to all three, questioning whether Hibs goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay was impeded as he attempted to deal with a Christian Dailly header before Novo levelled.

He said: "Rangers put us under a lot of pressure in the second half. Unfortunately we could not quite hold on but I was pleased with the effort.

"I felt the goal was one we could and should have done better at. I don't know if there was a foul on Ma-Ka, he seemed to have the ball in his hands but there were so many bodies in there."

I don't think the ball crossed the line, but would totally agree to have technology in place to resolve these issues.
Ma-ka looked like he was impeded, but it may have been one of his own.

Riordan's goal was peach, that is what he is all about.
He can be ineffective for long spells within a game - and then a little bit of magic...GOAL.

As usual Mixu could not make the correct substitution on time or with the right player.

O'Brien was a wasted sub - he had one chance to run at them and then wasted it.

In the second half they were all over us, we defended too deep and tried to counter - which almost paid off with Riordan again, sadly he mishit the ball.

They then got a goalmouth scrambler - again!

Bring on the 'tic.

Rangers are suddenly wanting rule changes and new ways of making decisions all because of one questionable decision against them. Unbelievable!

How's about implementing these changes first:

TV evidence for penalty claims.

TV evidence for offside claims.

TV evidence for FREE kicks outside the box.

Inviting NON scottish refs to referee matches involving Rangers and Celtic.

Rooting out all the fans who sing sectarian songs.

Making kicking the ball away an automatic booking offence (two Rangers played did it on Saturday neither were booked)

Using TV evidence to reprimand divers (Boyd was at it again last night)

I could go on and on...there's lots to be cleaned up in Scottish football that goes well beyond one decision Rangers didn't get. And incidentally I thought the ref/linesman made the right decision - it was inconclusive whether the whole of the ball was over the line or not - to give a goal the ref/linesman HAS to be SURE.

hibs have done what they were meant to, now just lie down to your big team and it will be job done, well done Hibs, HOW BAD ARE RANGERS? Walter Smith is embarassing. I have felt this angry about 6 time sthis season , all down to Sir Walter. What a let down.

Dailly, Velicka, Boyd - i have never seen so many POOR POOR players in a Rangers team.

Riordans goal is just what he does, his ability to shoot from anywhere is class. Rangers dont have that skill in their whole squad.

btw it was a goal..............by a mile. Rangers done AGAIN.

The ball was defo more in than out, but even with the TV replays it is impossible to tell if the whole ball crossed the line.

4 years ago a linesman's decsion at Tynie (George Davis) helped Rankgers to the title. Sweet revenge maybe??

I think the Hibs will give us a good game on Sunday but I fancy Celtic to be up for it and to have the poise and class to win but only narrowly.

Rangers will hammer Aberdeen - another Calderwood Capitulation.

#3 Wrong!!! It's only a goal if the referee blows his whistle and points to the centre circle. The ball may have been over the line (it wasn't) but it wasn't a goal.

What's this? A bitter weegie. Never,

No one can tell me with 100% certainty that the ball was over the line. But I can tell anyone with 100% certainty that I am unsure whether it was or wasn't - so the ref made the right decision. The REF has to be SURE it was over the line before he can give a goal.

With two games to go and nine points behind how do you work that out.

No doubt the assistant referee will be charged with bringing the game into disrepute. He put his flag up to stop the mighty Rangers getting a goal. Well I say well done mate and I would like to see a few more of you who are not bias to old firm.

It looked to me that the ball was kicked out of Makalambay's hands just before the so called over the line "goal" and their actual goal. IMHO both should have been free kicks to Hibs.

And yes, Chisholm definitely had a bad/poor game. Maybe the contract pressure is getting to him.

I think it's a crying shame that Rangers may lose the championship due to a linesman giving a decision against them.I don't think cameras on the goal line are the answer. If Chick Young could see the ball was clearly over the line then the goal should have been given, end of story.

Note how all the controversy after the game is about the linesman not giving a goal (I was pretty much in line with it and in real time I thought it was unclear - expected it to be given, pleased it wasn't) and not about Walter Smith; right back at left back, left back in midfield; Lafferty as a wide player etc. Strachan replaces one winger with another and gets pelters. Hopefully he'll keep him off the park on Sunday too.

After watching the second half last night, l didn`t realise that we had 11 players out there....chisholm was a joke and how Mixu (HOPELESS)kept him on is a mystery, Rangers changed their team at half-time while we kept on playing the same players who most of were terrible.
Fletcher work rate was pathetic, is he scared that he`ll get injured before the tranfer window opens and we can get rid of him. We need a new manager before the start of next season as Mixu hasn`t got a clue about tactics or when to change a team that is getting over-run.

The fact that daft chick is fat bald and ugly doesn't matter to me...but what does is that I pay a licence fee to pay that clown's wages.

We know he's biased but his knowledge his sadly lacking as well more than a few times this season he's got the team sheets wrong and even mixed names up all over the gaff - I remember earlier this season he said Celtic have Stephen Caldwell and Mark McManus in the centre of their defence. Total joke.

Add to this his sycophancy to Rangers and his wish-they-were-funny come overly sentimental wee nostalgic stories about having beers with legends, make him unlistenable.

Bottom line is the Orks once again arrived, sitting clear at the top of the SPl, spewing forth their bile and bigotry from the stands, they never change.

They left however, with title dreams slipping away, sitting second in the SPL, dejected, shattered, put in their place ironically by a team with a historical Irish / catholic connection. How they must have seethed.

However, talking as a complete non bigot protestant Hibby I say "marvelous"

Walter's choice of player to face Hibs was indeed curious to say the least.

Steve Smith - a left back playing in midfield.

Velicka - a slow coach who could never outjump or outmuscle Rob Jones.

Boyd - see velicka

Plus because of the lack of balance Rangers played Davis, Mendes and Edu in the middle and for the second game in a row were completley outpassed in the middle.

It will be interesting to see the line up for Saturday.

Having seen pics in the the daily rags proclaiming Rangers were "Robbed", the linesman was in perfect position to make a judgement.
As pointed out earlier, the ref did not award a goal, ergo, it wasn't a goal.
Talk of tv technology is perhaps a long way off as it would have to installed in all leagues perhaps forcing poorer clubs or affiliations from competing.
Borrowing a political soundbite "Back to basics" (should earn me £1200 expenses) The Referee has the final say.

#42 Exactly, when I first saw the incident on TV it was very hard to tell what had happened and then Chick was on the radio saying it was a clear goal, as I waited for the replay I expected to see the ball a good foot or 2 fully over the line the way he was talking.

When the actual replays came on a few seconds later I couldnt, and still cant understand how he could have come out with such a committed statement and as you pointed out, from his vantage point with im guessing the same viewpoints as other TV networks.

Was more in than out I'd agree but that's irrelevant, please Rangers fans look at the rules of the game as laid down by FIFA....

Basically "the ball has to be COMPLETELY over the line"... not 99.9%, not more in than out, not 1% but 100%....

In my opinion the ball was NOT completely over the line and therefore was not a goal regardles of what the ref & linesman did.

Ohhhhh and it's not the referee who give a goal its the assistant who decides if the ball has completely crossed the line or not as he has the best view of it. He didnt feel the ball had crossed the line & the referee accepted that decision.

for once an edinburgh club got a break against one of the glasgow parasites, and boy they are crying, like a foulkes losing a pound
those 2 have ruined scottish football, they grab all the cash from tv deals, want even more, their support is maybe 40% from glasgow and made up of glory hunters
from all over scotland, they grab all the best talent ,and let it rot on the bench, happy in the fact, that they are no longer scoring against them
the late Tom Hart told tv companies to get lost, and barred them from easter road,so none of the glasgow 2 got their games filmed at easter road, why ,if it were possible, dont all the rest of the spl clubs ban tv when one of those 2 visit
tv would then be devoid of the blue and green lot
but clubs who need the cash would suffer

Its bad decisions like this that give credence to the conspiracy theorists who claim that certain referees and assisant referees with known sympathies for a team in the East End of Glasgow continuosly give debateable decisions in their favour yet deny similar decsisions to all their rivals. fust ask the Aberdeen Manager, or the Falkirk manager or indeed the Dundee United Manager who saw one of his players visciously assaulted by a Celtic Player at the weekend.

Of course the time is right for the use of technology in football. We have seen numerous decisions in England which would have been clarified by the use of cameras and we don't have the same issues with bias from our officials.

As for Rangers title challenge being in tatters, from what I can see that is the fault of one man and it is not the referee it is Walter Smith.

You would have thought that with only three games to go he would have had his players totally motivated from the start of the game and indeed you would have thought that he would have done his homework and sent out a team to play to Hibs weaknesses, not their strengths!

The Hibs defence could have happily taken care of every high ball that was punted into their box even if this game had gone on all week and they must have thought Christmas had come early when the saw Velicka and Smith line up for Rangers.
