Published Date: 15 May 2008
HIBS will complete their preparations for the start of next season with a friendly against English Premier League side Wigan Athletic at Easter Road.
The Hibees have pencilled in a tie against Steve Bruce's men for Tuesday, August 5 as they finalise plans for the new campaign which starts the following Saturday.

The Latics, who finished 14th in the English top flight this season, will bring a strong side north and Easter Road supporters can look forward to seeing the likes of England internationalist Emile Heskey, Antoine Sibierski and Mario Melchiot in action as their side prepares for the start of the SPL campaign.

The Capital club have yet to finalise the rest of their pre-season schedule, although they will be back in competitive action on July 5 for the start of their InterToto Cup campaign.

Wigan will make the trip to Edinburgh after having warm-up matches against Eintracht Frankfurt, Hannover 96, Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday. And Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen believes that the visit of Wigan will give his side the perfect warm-up for the start of SPL action a few days later.

"It's always good to play against Premiership sides as they give you a tough game before the start of the league," said the Hibs manager. "They have plenty of quality players and it will give us a good test. I'm sure it's one the fans will look forward to."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen insisted today that he's desperate to hold on to the club's top young starts for next season but admitted that everyone has their price.

The likes of Steven Fletcher have been linked with a move away from the Leith outfit over the summer but Paatelainen stressed he was keen to keep hold of the Scotland internationalist and his team-mates.

"I will do everything to keep my players but a £10million offer is a difficult offer to turn down," he explained. "That would be up to the chairman to decide but if an offer like that came in we'd have to consider it. I'm not surprised clubs are interested in some of our players but I'm hoping to keep every one of my top players here for next season."

Hibs reserves ended their league campaign with a 3-2 victory over St Mirren at Love Street yesterday. Kurtis Byrne grabbed two goals for the Hibees with David Wotherspoon netting the other against a Saints team who, until recently, had been challenging for the title. Abdessalam Benjelloun also missed a penalty.

Dublin Hibs-
First of all I'm not from Gorgie, I was born and brought up at an address in Easter Road.
You said Benji would not play for Hibs again. He played last night for Hibs.
You are wrong, and you are an idiot.

How sad a that we are unable to post on the Tommy Burns story to pay our respects.

A sad loss to Scottish football. My thoughts are with his family.

I would enter into discourse with you dumbo but of course what you do is jump in, make your silly little comment and then run away again until the next day....

After all you are "just a jambo" and a complete diddy to boot. Naturally you could only ever be a diddy as oppossed to ever having had one..... Perhaps this is why make such use of the term?

Sad lonely little boy, shunned by his peers and ridiculed by his opposites

Most likely away to eat a part size bucket of Ben & Jerrys and a 24 pack of walkers to comfort yourself now? Thats the sort of person you come across as anyway.

Oh Hall #14 you beat me to it.

Another massive glamour friendly for the hobo's can we expect a sell out ? of course not probably lucky to get into the 5 figures, that the embarassement they are.

Wigan indeed, falling off my seat laughing at teh wee teamers yet again.

#15 Well said. I suppose they'll need a big glamerous club like Wigan at ER to entice the fans back after a team of eastern european shepherds put them out the interhobo cup!!
19

Rolland,

15/05/2008 13:50:31
LOL - The interhobob cup.

I was going for the norwegian fish packers doing them this year, but shepherds will do.

Surely the mythical flair football will get them all back.

Hearts were going to enter this cup until they realised that a) they need a real manager to enter and b) they wouldnt qualify by default of the team being completely p*sh.

23

Rudolf Hucker,

Big team right enough.

Right thats it, i guess i'll have to go to Gorgie to see how the beautiful game is played with style and panache. Is that where the BIG team play? (what's big aboot finishing bottom six? I cannot get that logic.Oh aye support, cups, europe, yawn yawn, you read the history i'll watch fitba.)
25

Indie Rep Kid,

15/05/2008 14:06:10
Hallucinist and Rolland...........I would rather play Wigan in a pre-season friendly than over-hype a kickaround with Barca designed to fleece the fans (again)

tell me, which team came out of the blocks last season as a fit, prepared team and which team took to the field with Benisius up front on his own (a formation and line-up that was untried)?

26

KingKenny,

27

GGTTH#1,

15/05/2008 14:22:51
yes mixu, £10 million is a big offer to turn down another pearl of wisdom from the big finn. Realistically he would need to sell most of the first team to get £10 mill at the moment.
28

Rolland,

15/05/2008 14:45:09
#27 - Haha ha ha ha ha 10 million, probably the entire cost of the sqaud. Mind you we managed to get 9Mil for Gordon so 10 Million isn't that far away, mind you he had won a big cup and played in the Champions league.
29

Rolland,

15/05/2008 14:46:24
Oh and why would Hearts enter the interhobo cup ?

Just another of vlads broken promises, enter the big team into the interdiddy I think not.
30

He had played in a champions League Qualifier.

Why so bitter anyway?

Not bitter, just funny as feck, 10 millionm someone give the guy a realitiy check. You got twice as much as you should have for Brown and co so stop trying to pull a fast one and suggest any hobo is worth 10 mil, its like Vlad promising the CL it aint going to happen

Just to all you hearts fans laughing because we are playing Wigan! Remember your pre-season last year? yep big game against Barca, all you plums did was line vlads pockets and for what? The worst season in years!

We played two prem teams, both good games to get players fit instead of chasing barca round the park like dogs chasing a ball. Maybe if your club could get a proper pre-season in you might just make the top six.
35

Lenny,

15/05/2008 15:06:18
Rolland

Well you certainly come across as a bitter twisted lil' believer.

I never said anyone at ER is worth 10M. Of course they are not.
36

hibbyspurs,

15/05/2008 15:07:23
#31, thats a nasty stutter you've got there lad.... But a very true point made none the less....

#32, I have to agree tha Mixu was being a bit silly quoting sums of £10,000,000 for any current Hibs player but is it just possible he was speaking in hypothetical sense? I know you'll have to look that word up in the dictionary (thats the book with loads of words in it and describes their meaning lad) but I doubt at any point in the interview he was being serious with that figure.........

Its almost as laughable as youse getting £9,000,000 for Gordon but then again that actually happened, How did youse spent that tast transfer sum anyway? New world cup stars? Paying off some debt? Making sure old uncle Vlad could afford another submarine?

As for the CL statement, you sure as heck got that one right.

Anyhow.... Wheres "just a dumbo" gone? As I said earlier he makes his one little statement at Dublin & I everyday and then runs off to his mummy.....

At least the rest of youse Hearts fans can stick it out and take as well as give for the most part.....

Hurry along wi ye now dumbo......
37

Lenny,

15/05/2008 15:07:59
Fredster

Wasting your time. For some Hearts fans, like Rolland, its ALL about petty little point scoring over Hibs. Its all he cares about. I mean his team are completely garbage, have no manager, have crazy debt and he is trying to take the p*ss out of Hibs for entering the Inter Toto Cup. A complete b*wbag.
38

Fredster.,

15/05/2008 15:10:20

Thats a good point, its mad to think people like him try to hide his teams problems by having a dig at us. Least we have a future to look forward to.
39

Rolland,

15/05/2008 15:14:24
Well you see Goblin boy (and I bet that is what you are) a boy that goes about goblin folk - pay well does it ?

The big team may have finished in the bottom six for the first time ever, in a season of transition, you lot would get relegated, how was relegation by the way ?

Are your knees not sore in your line of work. Everything about Hearts is big, everything about the hobos is small.

We may have finished in the bottom half but still average and over the last five games we will average more than your tight fisted support, not many sell outs down fester road this season I notice.
40

Fredster.,

15/05/2008 15:20:17
#39

Well to start with Rolland you plonker, My nephew is a Hearts fan and said there was nothing near the crowds hearts were saying attending these games, that was also backed by a guy in work who said the same, so your talking gash.

Just out of interest what would you do if the so called "big team" went out of bussines? Believe me i hope to god you don't as i for one think we need Hibs & Hearts in Edinburgh.. but it could happen! How stupid will you and the rest who come on and have a go at Hibs look.
41

Lenny,

15/05/2008 15:46:01
Rolland the only thing big about Hearts is your debt and your ego's. Its lucky that you appear to represent the minority of Hearts support otherwise they would be in serious trouble.
42

Mike D W,

15/05/2008 16:18:40
Whilst Wigan are not the sort of glamour fixture our esteemed neighbours would attract, they are after all one of the Big Three Scottish Clubs, it will be a hard game and good preparation for the season ahead.

Of course if you are a big club, you will organise your best fixture for pre-season and then go downhill until you finish off losing to a team that is going out of existence.

Would everybody stop trying to explain to Rolland the different systems used by Hibs and Hearts to count the size of the crowd. He does not seem to understand that Hibs count the attendance as everyone who attends the game and Hearts count "attendance" as ALL the season ticket holders plus any non-season ticket holder who come along on the day. He can not seem to compute that if a season ticket holder does not go to the game for whatever reason, and there seem to be more reasons with each passing day, they are still counted as an attendee.

It is a bit like the BBC saying that every TV Licence holder watched The Apprentice last night because they have a TV Licence.

Big Team = Inflated Attendances

Maybe Fletcher will get to play for Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly against Hearts in August.

43

Lenny,

# 42

No, Hearts are clearly too big for Real Madrid. The only other team in the world that is as big as Hearts is Hearts. Which is why they recently played each other in a Friendly.

In fact, Hearts are probably the biggest 8th placed team in Edinburgh.

No disrespect to Wigan, buy yet again we've organised a friendly against one of the Premiership strugglers (eg Bolton, Middlesbro, Charlton, West Brom and Sunderland.

Much smaller teams than us can attract Man U, Liverpool (and Barcelona), so why can't Hibs get their finger out and invite a team that the fans really want to see?
46

Rolland,

15/05/2008 17:11:43
Thank poster 45 - See even your fans aren't whooping it up at the thought of the mighty wigan.

Watch it now 45 you'll be outcast for daring to question them and having ambitions.
47

FFF,

15/05/2008 17:35:27
Much smaller teams might get Man U Liverpool (and Barcelona), but they rarely get the real deal. Usually it's a bunch of reserves out for a kickabout. Hibs got a real kickstart to last season playing meaningful friendlies against Premier League survivors, no mean feat in the best league in the world.

Hearts embarrased themselves with their world tour of Ukio clubs and a pointless game against a BIG team
48

Rolland,

15/05/2008 17:45:43
Doubt you'll ever see the hobos play the mighty barca now will we.

59

Dood,

16/05/2008 09:00:17
Frankly, I don't give a hoot about who we play pre-season. I usually take in a couple of the away games at smaller grounds but have little intention of forking out full walk up ticket prices for what is effectively a training exercise. It's a wee bug bear of mine that the club don't give you this pre-season game as part of your season ticket plan as a 'thank you'.

Senisble part over - How the mighty big teamers have fallen. 'We have bigger pre-season friendlies than you'. WOW!!!!!! Is it not the case that your pre-season preparations last season were a shambles? Eh? Did you hit the new season running? Hmmm. You'll be telling us now that Coventry City are a bigger, more ambitious club than Wigan.

Rolland - You actually posted something sensible a couple of nights ago. I was concerned. Good to see that you have reverted back to type. To55ER.
