Hibs' mystery man gets thumb up from Sauzee

Published Date: 04 August 2008
HIBS boss Mixu Paatelainen today revealed how former Easter Road star Franck Sauzee has given the mystery trialist who played against Middlesbrough the thumbs up.
Paatelainen turned to his former team-mate and Hibs manager after the player, who he admitted was French but again declined to identify, was recommended to him. And the message from Sauzee was he believed the player could be a star for his old club.

As a result, the forward was given a chance on Saturday, replacing Alan O'Brien at half-time. He played a part when he provided the pass for Steven Fletcher to claim his second goal in what turned out to be a 3-2 defeat as the Tees-side outfit fought back with three goals in a devastating period.

Paatelainen, however, admitted the trialist didn't play as well as he believes he can and now the player will be given another chance to impress in Hibs' final pre-season game against Wigan at Easter Road tomorrow night.

He said: "He can do better, I am positive he can, and hopefully tomorrow he will show an improvement.

"I have done my homework on him, I've spoken to various people about him, including Franck, who said he believes he could be a very good player for us.

"It can be difficult for a trialist coming into a club with different players around him and a totally different environment. The player in question hadn't played a game up until Saturday and, in fact, has only been training for ten days, so he is a bit behind everyone else.

"We'll let everyone know who he is if he signs for us."

Paatelainen plans to make a few changes to the side which faced Middlesbrough for tomorrow's match, with skipper Rob Jones, who took a knee in the back from Egyptian striker Mido, taken
off suffering from "tight" hamstrings.

Teenage full-back Paul Hanlon missed out at the weekend after falling ill while midfield star John Rankin failed to make the 18 as did Brian Kerr who has not, according to Paatelainen, been told he is not good enough for Hibs despite newspaper reports to the contrary.

The Hibs boss said: "We will use a lot of substitutes tomorrow night although we didn't make many changes against Middlesbrough.

"It's the Tuesday before the season starts and we want to make sure plenty of players get the chance to show what they can do while we also ensure others don't play too much so they are fresh for Kilmarnock on Saturday.

"Paul was up all night before the match unwell. He was feeling terrible but came to the ground to be assessed and was sent home before the rest of the squad arrived."

Paatelainen will be keen to see how the 18-year-old shapes up against Steve Bruce's English Premier League side with Ian Murray, who slotted in at left-back on Saturday, suspended for the trip to Rugby Park, a consequence of being sent off for a trip on Celtic's Aiden McGeady.

Having endured a problematical pre-season in which Hibs haven't won a game, Paatelainen was encouraged by his side's performance – at least for the first 70 minutes against Middlesbrough – proof, he insisted, that everything would fall into place in time for the new SPL season as he had declared on many occasions.

He said: "We have the ability, the fitness, the tactical knowledge, it's all coming together. The time to show it is when the league season starts, when you are playing for points.

"There were plenty of positives from Saturday but also stuff we can improve on which, hopefully, we will do."

David Hardie again obsessed with the word 'star'. I am beginning to suspect he does not know what it means and is mixing it up with some other word. Rankin is no star and the team was all the better for his absense on Saturday.

Oh and # 1, how many Hibs fans were at Hampden for the biggest derby in history?

Yes - I think Hearts will always be able to slag of Hibs for that reason. :P 107

Yes please,

Then I will remind you of the full Derby record between Hibs and Hearts and that will put your silly little comment into some for of context.

To equal Hearts Derby wins over Hibs the Hibees would have to win every derby game for a decade.

Did you see what he did there? You change the Hibs manager's name to include a reference to his "heid". That's sheer comedy genius. i wish I could get tickets for his fringe festival show. Oh look, I mentioned fringe. Is that "heid" related enough to raise a titter from the Jambo masses.

And as for Jambo Number 2. Well are all his posts full of number 2 or what.

Clubs like Hibs could do a lot worse than taking a look at some of the young Gers reserve players who they could get on loan. we have a huge (and extremely talented) squad, and some of the players would benefit from going to wee clubs like Dundee, Morton or Hibs for a spell. It would keep them grounded in reality, and they would lose their 'prima-donna' image playing in grounds like cappielow, dens or easter road every week. A win-win for both clubs, as our reserves are a lot better than anything that hibs could produce themselves.

Feeling a wee bit touchy today...

Ok then let me explain it...Mr Sauceheid was according to the followers of the "Flairmiesters" the greatest player to ever live and was gonna be the greatest manager you ever had - Then he single handledly landed you with some of the worse players ever to pull on the Green and White of the Leith Brazil...

He couldn't pick his nose never mind pick a player..

On saying that - his teams record looks quite Barcelona like compaired the current imcumbant of the San Giro...

I think I'd rather have a fax machine to Kaunas than the last 4 clown's you guys have put in the managers office

Jasbar,

I enjoyed the match on Saturday.

The two goals from Fletcher were superb, and I've no doubt it's only a matter of time before the others get on the score sheet.

The team appears good enough to see us through the start of the campaign and I'm hoping they can get a bit of form under their belt before meeting the jambos and the OF.

I like Thicot. And the triallist shows promise. I reckon he could do a job for us. I asked about the playmaker - Deano was superb all afternoon and Keenan looks to be a great acquisition.

I'm still not impressed by the goalkeeping situation at Easter Road. McNeill still makes too many elementary mistakes. He doesn't seem to be in total command of his area.

In a team that scores prolifically these can be put up with, but when there's a dearth of goals they become crucial.

I would question the goalie coaching at Easter Road.

I can't wait for Zemmama to come back, and I would like to see some resolution of the Benji situation. He's a quality player, I hope he stays.

All in all, it's going to be a tough year, but if we can get of to a reasonable start we may just do alright.

Perhaps the players should remember that if they want a decent summer break next year, then they need to qualify for Europe outright to avoid another Intertoto fiasco.

As fro farmer and Petrie, I'm still not impressed, but it's time to put them on the backburner and comcentrate on the team. They're not forgotten though and I haven't changed my opinion of them.

Good luck to Mixu and the guys then. Here's to the Hibees.

Agree totally.

Especially with the Petrie, Farmer bit.... I have ot changed my opinion that they should go sooner rather than later but the season starts in earnest now and I'm just interested in getting behind the team but ret assured if the team is failing I know who I hold responsible for this.

Much more fight on Saturday and looked better, hopefully a sign of things to come. Another couple of signing of the right calibre and we could be back in business.

Meanwhile on the other side of town, the revelations that the yams war chest will most likely be remaining closed for the forseable future is most amusing, when he signed ol Csaba was going to sign this that and the other world cup star with the coffers from old uncle Vlad rolling in..... Looks like the real truth is the yamz are skint, Laszlo is indeed canon trained rather than Uefa & the will be starting the season with the same buch of no hopers they ended the last with the exception of idi amin's relation....

Only 5000 at their game yesterday as well I gather or was it a fancy dress special where they all turned up as seats?

I'm more upbeat about the season today but remain guarded until the first month or so in where we can see where we really are.

One things certain we're slowly inching forward but the yamz are at best standing still.....
30

Silence of the Yams,

us older chaps recall a periods when the show was on the other foot so to speak. Now by use of some imaginative arithmetic.

Some might recall the period Sept 1968 to sept 1974, during which time Hibs remained unbeaten in Derby matches. Now, since that was only 2 games per season we need to extrapolate

so we have 6 seasons at 4 rather than 2 games per season makes the equivilent of 24 games unbeaten, oh and I nearly forgot 1 SC game making 25 which rather puts your 22 into perspective

I may be gone some time while I work on a counter-theory on the ''empty seats at Hampden'' attack.

Have to correct you there Kenny. Back in April I watched Hibs reserves play Rangers reserves at Almondvale and the Hibs won easily. If it were not for a the usual soft penalty Rangers would not even have scored. They were red faced and chasing shadows as the Hibs reserves (full of under 19's) hammered Rangers 5 - 1.

So thanks Kenny, but no thanks.

45

Mike D W,

04/08/2008 17:27:21
The one truth coming out of all the preseason games is that at this time of year results count for nothing, performance is everything.

Admittedly, Hibs performances up until Saturday have been dire. Even Saturday showed a certain fragile mentality amongst the Hibs team.

However, if we can play well against Wigan (positive result would be good, but not the end of the world if we lose), maybe, just maybe, we can look forward to taking on Killie. Now that game is all about a result and sod the way it is achieved.

#46 to be honest, Hull are a EPL team as much as Hamilton Accies are SPL! Still a good win for Hearts as Hull were one of the better Championship sides last season.

It stills seems strange to me that Hibs can not attract a decent goalie. McNeill is just too small. Maka has the physical make up of a goalie, but seems to lack concentration. There must be good goalie's out there that would see Easter Road as a good shop window to display their talents. Probably no end of opportunities to show off their skills.

Greatest Hibs team. The Greatest Game in History - January 1st 1973

easy. very easy indeed.
The team from 1-1-73.

Hibernian - Herriot; Brownlie, Schaedler; Stanton, Black, Blackley; Edwards, O'Rourke, Gordom, Cropley, Duncan. Sub - Hamilton

5-0 AT HALF-TIME..

The Greatest Game in History - January 1st 1973

On New Year's Day 1973 , Hibernian were sitting second in the old Scottish First Division, with only Jock Stein's legendary Celtic team ahead of them. Hibs were an attractive footballing team, but still carried a physical presence. Hibs had already had landed two trophies that season, the Drybourgh Cup, in which they defeated Celtic, and more significantly, the League Cup, won the month previous to the game, with Celtic again the losers. Hibs manager Eddie Turnbull took his side to Tynecastle Park for the Edinburgh Derby full of confidence, and a Hibs win was expected, especially as Hearts had failed to beat Hibs in the previous 14 clashes. Hibs needed to win by six clear goals to go top of the league , as Celtic's game against Rangers had been postponed due to large numbers of the Celtic team coming down with flu. However few in the packed stadium would have thought they could go one better and that they would witness one of Hibs' finest ever victories...
