Hogg return for Celtic clash is boost for Hibs Uefa hopes

HIBS' European hopes were handed a boost today with the news Chris Hogg could return to action in Sunday's crunch clash with Celtic at Parkhead.
The influential defender has been out of action since damaging the medial ligaments in his left knee in a 2-0 victory over St Mirren at the start of last month.

However, he was due to resume full training today for the first time and, assuming he shows no adverse reaction, he could feature in the Easter Road side's final two matches of the season at Celtic then at home to Motherwell.

Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen conceded that the return of Hogg would be a huge plus for his side as they battle it out for third spot in the SPL and the UEFA Cup qualification that comes with it.

But he stressed he wouldn't rush the defender back into action if there were any doubts over the former Ipswich Town youngster's fitness.

"Chris Hogg will take part in a team training session today so things are looking better," said Paatelainen.

"I don't know yet if he will be involved on Sunday as it will all depend on the state of his knee but it's good to have him back training.

"We hope to have him available because he's our player of the season and you want all your good players at this stage of the campaign. He's a good, positive character all round and you want that."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen insisted today that reports the SPL season could be extended again, with Hibs' final match of the campaign against Motherwell being pushed back from Thursday May 22 to Saturday May 24, would pose "no problem" for his side. The SPL are understood to be in talks with the SFA in a bid to have the Scottish Cup final between Queen of the South and Rangers, currently scheduled for May 24, switched so that the final round of league matches can be played then to aid Rangers' bid for UEFA Cup glory.

If those plans were to get the go-ahead it would leave Hibs with a gap of almost two weeks between this weekend's match with Celtic and their final game of the season against Motherwell – which could decide who enters the UEFA Cup next term.

The Fir Park outfit would have a game the previous Saturday against Rangers.

"As long as we know, well before the game, then I don't think it changes anything for us," said Paatelainen.

"But it is amazing how many times these things seem to have been changed – you'd think you would get it right at the first change.

"If it changes then it won't be a problem.

"It would mean a two week break between fixtures which I suppose means players could lose their rhythm a wee bit, but if we have to put in a practice game or something then we will. We'll cope."

I hope he's not thinking of breaking up the partnership between Jones and Canning. The usual gaps through the centre of our defence have disappeared and Jones at last is able to concentrate on his own position without worrying about covering for the lack of positional sense that Hogg displays.

I know a lot of supporters like Hogg but they really have to admit that we are a lot more solid with Jones and Canning.

Provided Mixu is confident that McCann can play well against McGeady then he should not bring Hogg back just yet. Canning and Jones will be needed for their height against the rough (pushing, arms across face and butt out) JVH. Also I would leave Gatheussi and Beuzelin in the stand. Lets try to remember Boozy as he was in his first 2 seasons under Tony Mowbray and not sully that memory any more with another inept away performance. He has hardly kicked a ball since the League Cup final a year past March.

Any been to the bookies today?

What price are you getting on hibs not winning a single game post-split?

#3,#4 The right back position shouldn't be a problem now with McCann back. He had a good game against Rangers and was always in the right place when needed.

I agree about Beuzelin, a great player for us for two seasons when he wasn't injured. I thought at the atart of this campaign that he owed us a good season in the light of his previous injuries but I have been very disappointed.

Yes Pike, it is obvious that you are not a stupid boy! The message to Mixu must be 'don't panic, don't panic'.

Having watched the lowlights on Scotsport last night of Hearts performance in the bottom 6 v Falkirk last night, I am surprised you have the nerve to pop up here commenting on Hibernian matters. Hibs may not actually win a game after the TOP SIX split, but they are so far up there competing against the BEST TEAMS in the SPL and have drawn 2 difficult matches and narrowly lost to a resurgent Aberdeen team. Hold you comments till next season I would say!

Completely agree with your comments regarding Hogg and Boozy. Additionally, I also think Murray is wasted at left-back (his weakest position), but what's the alternative? Not Zarabi. I think Chisholm should retain his place after nullifying Backpass-Bazza yet again on Sunday, but he needs to work on his first touch and distribution.

#7 are you real, the BEST TEAMS in the SPL, lets be honest outside of the OF and perhaps Gretna, thes rest are pretty much of the same standard.

Did you also explain that this was the team that you couldn't beat the last we met?

Did you also explain the derby record between your team and mine?

Did you also explain that we represented Scotland in the Champions league a couple of years ago?

Did you also explain that we are the only team to split the OF since the SPL started?

Did you also explain that last nights game might have been bottom six but that this was the first season that Hearts have played bottom six football?

Did you also explain that you were top six but aren't good enough to win a single game so far and are merely the top six whipping boys?

Did you also explain all that?

Don't agree about Boozy , yes he may be off but I think we'll need him on Sunday as he's still got a bit of quality & its not the time to play a youngster . Chisholm looks a decent prospect but gave the ball away too many times on Sunday & if that happens this Sunday we'll get punished big time . Its vital we get at least 1 point on Sunday as anything less & I think it will be all over for 3rd . To be a goal up against both D.United & Aberdeen & only take 1 point is a scandal .
