Mixu slates ref over Co-op Cup blunders

Published Date: 27 August 2008
RAGING Mixu Paatelainen today blamed blunders by referee Iain Brines for Hibs Co-operative Insurance Cup exit – and produced the evidence to back his claim.

The Easter Road boss was furious when, having seen his side stage a stunning comeback after trailing by two goals to lead 3-2, Brines awarded opponents Morton a controversial penalty.

Paatelainen was adamant Allan Jenkins' shot had struck Dean Shiels in the ribs even though his arms were raised, a view supported by video evidence. Iain Russell, with his second goal of the game, hauled the First Division side level. If the big Finn was incensed at that decision, he was incandescent with rage when Brines penalised Chris Hogg after a tussle with Erik Paartalu, the video again backing up his opinion that the Hibs skipper for the night was the victim rather than the perpetrator of the offence.

And to add insult to injury, while Hogg was forced to retreat to the touchline after receiving treatment, Paartalu, having been given the once-over by the Morton physio remained on the pitch in defiance of the rules. As a result, Hibs were left short-handed in defence as goalkeeper David Grof failed to hold Peter Weatherson's shot from the resultant free-kick, allowing former Easter Road kid Ryan Harding to win the tie for the Greenock side.

Paatelainen's fury boiled over, with the Hibs boss, who was just back after a two-match touchline ban, sent to the stand for, he claimed, no more than throwing a towel to the ground in disgust.

He said: "The ball hit Dean on the ribs, he has a red mark on his side. I have watched the video many times and you can see it. It is not a penalty, the ball does not hit his arm. That is my judgment."

Paatelainen and video analyst Grant Small treated the assembled Press corps to re-runs of both incidents, claiming Paartalu's challenge on Hogg which settled a seven-goal thriller in extra-time, was "an assault" by the Morton player and should have resulted in a free-kick to Hibs.

He said: "Paartalu never looks at the ball, he looks at Chris, turns his back and jumps all over him. The referee was in a great position to see it."

The video evidence also clearly showed both physios enter the field of play, Hibs' Colin McLelland treating Hogg at some length while Paartalu, despite having risen to his feet, was also checked.

Paatelainen said: "Our player goes off, theirs does not and we are a man short. You can make up your mind as to who is right or wrong. As far as I am concerned we should have won the game 3-2."

Brines was already under fire from Falkirk manager John Hughes having failed to see Celtic captain Stephen McManus use an arm to score the opening goal at Parkhead at the weekend, while he also had to apologise for chalking off a legitimate goal from Aberdeen's Zander Diamond at the same venue last season. And Paatelainen claimed the whistler's gaffes took away from his side's storming comeback last night after Russell and Stevie Masterton had fired Morton into a seemingly unassailable lead.

But a spectacular 30-yard strike from Joe Keenan followed by a jinking run and precise shot from Shiels forced the game into extra-time, with Steve Pinau taking just 36 seconds of that period to put Hibs ahead.

However, just how Hibs found themselves trailing by two goals will remain a mystery, with the Edinburgh club, as Paatelainen claimed, having created enough chances to "win five games."

Profligacy in front of goal has already caused Hibs some harm this season and it damaged them big style on this occasion.

Although Morton goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert pulled off some superb saves and was aided by robust and fearless defending, Hibs, and Scotland striker Steven Fletcher in particular, were guilty of some abysmal finishing. Twice Fletcher was left with only Cuthbert to beat but on both occasions the 21-year-old, who doesn't seem to be able to buy a goal at the moment, placed his shot at a good height for the goalkeeper who pushed them aside.

Colin Nish, too, could have had a hat-trick before half-time although the fact he didn't extend his scoring run was more down to bad luck than anything else, a shot on the turn coming off Cuthbert, a header flashing over and an attempt to divert a team-mate's shot on target finding the legs of an opponent.

Amidst all this Hibs were hit by a sucker punch, Russell beating Andy McNeil, who picked up a head knock in the process, to a through ball, leaving the goalkeeper stranded wide of his goal, the Morton forward showing tremendous awareness to curl a shot from a tight angle into the net despite the attempts of Ian Murray to clear.

And so it went on throughout the second half, Moroccan star Merouane Zemmama, who was making a surprise return following a broken foot, twisting and turning before unleashing a shot which was blocked by the outstretched left boot of Cuthbert, a feat he repeated a few minutes later before Dominic Shimmim got in the way of a Shiels effort which seemed certain to find the net.

Masterton blasted home a stunning free-kick from 30 yards to apparently kill the game, but then came that late onslaught which forced the game into extra-time and that controversial climax. Paatelainen said: "I was very, very disappointed for the players because they put in an absolutely huge effort.

"What a comeback it was, every one of them showed that spirit and ability to comeback, that's the spirit we want. We had enough chances to win five games, I am so disappointed and gutted for the boys."

Although obviously feeling a great sense of injustice, Paatelainen would agree Morton played their part in what was a pulsating 120 minutes, Davie Irons' players showing their own courage having seen a two-goal lead disappear.

He said: "We knew it was going to be tough because they are physically a big, strong side. At set-pieces we were up against it, we missed Rob Jones."

What Hibs also missed was a physical presence of their own in the middle of the park where Morton used their height, power and strengthen to muscle opponents off the ball on too many occasions.

The return of French star Steven Thicot should help redress that problem but Hibs badly need someone in the mould of Paatelainen's old team-mate, Mathias Jack, someone who can impose himself on the opposition, win the ball and give it to those who can make best use of it.

Apparently the 4th official called Brines across because when Mixu lost the tattie at Morton getting a free kick when their player assaulted Chris Hogg mid-air and aggresively threw a towel down in the dugout area. Mixu should have chinned the fourth official and then smacked Brines for being an incompetent useless whistle blower and mad any impending ban worthwhile.

Now before people start ranting I am only joshing and dont condole violence unless it is directed at Traffic Wardens, referees or cyclists.

How on earth is Donald McVicar still in a job?

In any other job he would have been sacked long ago for incompetence. This man has "developed" the referees in Scotland to the level we are now witnessing. It's akin to "on the job" training in front of tens of thousands on a weekly basis.

What will it take for the SFA to do something? All 10 non OF managers or clubs boycotting games?

If we had any decent investigative reporters in Scotland rather than OF sycophants we might actually get an answer. Think Hell will freeze over first though.

As a jambo, even though today the smile on my face is hurting me, I will make a serious point here

The ref crisis has now reached melt down ? Taking Mixu's word that 2 decisions that led to Mortons 3rd and 4th goals were indeed outragous by Brines, and that Celtic have played 3 and in all games have had help, Rangers 1 in favour/ 1 against, now Hibs 1. thats 6 games where the outcome has been manufactured by the officials and we are still in August. We need to start using a video ref or get foreign refs in!

Referee's are not infallible, we know this.

The main point of this thread should run a lot deeper than that. Regardless of poor decisions, we should always be able to rise above to a sufficiant level to beat a team in the division below us.

Serious questions need to be asked about the team selection. I like Stevenson as a player but he is not a left back, if it had to be changed play Murray at left back and bring Canning into the centre. As for the goalkeeping situation there is only one answer....

Ratboy blooters anyone does he? only thing hes good at blootering is himself, from the alcohol and white powder he rams up his beak, think you will find he likes to start a fight and then when it kicks off the little rodent runs away and lets his muppet followers and hangers on deal with it.

No bitterness here, however i detect a great del of bitterness from yourself given that you had to resort to personal cheap childish insults which clearly show your level of intelect.

Come back when your good enough.....oh how the times have changed.

Despite going out of the cup, which i'm disappointed about, hibs financial figures from last season make good reading.

And just because i'm really petty, Hearts made a loss of £13 million and according to the BBC story they have a wage bill of £12.5 million.

So in conclusion, we're out the cup, but not in debt. Hearts are still in the cup, have huge, spiralling debts and i know they definately wont win the cup, so who cares.

Concentrate on the league boys.

Aye that's a good one mate, you could concentrate on the Scottish Cup too.

Great stuff were all pleased for you, its just a shame the SFA don't bring out a cup or trophy for being the best run team financially.

Think you will find Hearts debt when it is next reported will be sitting approx 20million, not bad going considering it was 36million. Hearts or should i sayd Romanov/UKIO have wiped out nearly 16million debt in a few months, it taken Hibs to wipe out approx 18million debt in how many years? 3 or is it 4? or longer?

FYI the Hearts wage bill has been massively reduced.

Seriously Hibs were robbed by an incompetent ref.Time all of us outside the OF got together and tried to do something about it.

maybe we could have collection at each game and pay the ref more than the slum dwellers do.

just a thought.

What a disgrace for a once product club like Hibs- Manager constantly fighting with refs and other club managers, and now club about to sign a player who a is banned from all of Edinburgh's night clubs because of his behaviour.

And another thing, Elfsborg won the league and cup in 2006, so how can they be such a bad team. No bad teams in Europe now, look at your Lithuanian bin men putting Rangers out the Champions League. No doubt they'll be playing for hearts next season, but they best watch out, not many jobs in council refuse these days.

I agree, elfsborg are amazing and true worl beaters... Sorry i meant panel beaters.

No bad teams in Europe? Dunno about that I listened to some wee team get boabied 2-0 at home then 0-2 away by a bunch of panel beaters from Denmark... oh hold on wasn't that...

Awww booohooo, cant stand the heat from the big boys...."Mummy those big bad jambos are ripping me to shreads again"

Please indicate where i have made any personal attack on anyone on here before post 79

I think you will find i was mocking Hibs, if you cant take it son dont give it out, its not the first time you have appeared on a Hearts thread to spout drivel, whenever theres a nagative about us.

If you want to get into personal choldish banter i suggest you look elsewhere, your school playground would probably be a good place to start.

I'm always cheery Vic.

We should've won last night, and a ribbing is expected. But you Yams are back to your gloriously above your station best a la the burley days. Setting yourselves up for another glorious fall from grace (well, if you can call bottom 6 cannon fodder graceful!)

Still, as much as I hate having a go at refs when we've been beat, Brines should be binned, end off. At least bump him down for a few 3rd division games to get him off his bloody high horse.

#96 Worst come back ever. Was a really bitter sounding post, and I didn't say you attacked anyone. The bitterness was just very evident from your post.

I've been posting on here for years mate. Dont do as much now because of the amount of OF mince and the lunatics taking over the asylum.

Im very rarely on the Hearts board. And anyway, why come on a hibs story, purely at the wind up, then try and take the moral high ground when someone makes a very valid point on your post? It was laced with hatred and bitterness?

And did it really hurt that much me mentioning your fat jambo @rse?! Boo hoo indeed.

You mean Sweden. Ofcourse, education or general common sense isn't a strong point for people down your end.

Nobody said they were world beaters, but one of the top teams from a nation that consistantly qualifies for major tournaments cannot be a bad team. Also, they beat Hibs who finished their season above the "wealthy" unwashed reprabates of gorgie. Again, can't be such a bad team.

And just while i'm here, Hearts are just £20 million in debt writes one chuffed Jambo. How can he say it with such pride? great, you've wiped £16 million from your original debt, but do we really know what is going on in that strange eastern european bank. I'm sure the banks share holders are delighted that their money is being pumped into an unsuccesful scottish club. Guaranteed when Vlad leaves he'll leave all that debt you thought was gone. Watch this space.

Would like to think with the proper application and effort, Hearts should p!ss it, but will you get that? Hope the shining example of Mikey Stewart has them in check........

Do hope yous get papped out!

I was merely correcting you I have no hatred towards our wee cousins, some of my very good m8's are Hibs season ticket holders, and we always meet up before a derby for a becy them go our seperate ways.

I don't come on Hibs threads that often but when there is constant bile and abuse aimed at us on Hearts threads from certain moronic Hobos then i think it only right when you have a spot of bother to return the compliment.

As for my "Fat jambo @rse" as you like to call it, there is more bitterness in that one line that any of my posts. Since you mention it though because we all know you hobos like a bit of male @rse its doing very well sitting here on a nice comfy chair.

Oops sorry, yes Sweden you are quite correct... the education down my way is fine thank you very much. Stockbridge is a lovely place and although i never went to school or university there i am sure the pupils at their schools do really well.

I went to balerno High School actually and at that time it was officialy the best non-public school in Britain.

Okay so getting horsed of a reasonable but by no means good team with some european pedigree is maybe acceptable for a team as poor as Hibs but are Morton, Clyde and Cowdenbeath now to be considered good sides?

Still when you come from the slums of the east you probably see greenock as the land of Milk and Honey.
