Stevenson aims to use Scotland call-up as Hibs catalyst

LEWIS STEVENSON is keeping his fingers crossed that his call-up to the Scotland under-21 side can coincide with a regular return to the Hibs starting line-up this season.
The little midfielder found himself mainly on the bench for the Easter Road side in the second half of last season, readily admitting that he had suffered from a dip in form.

However, he has been involved over the course of the pre-season games
that Hibs played in the summer and was part of Billy Stark's pool of players for tonight's UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying match against Lithuania in Suduva.

He concedes that his inclusion in the national set-up came as something of a surprise, given the amount of first-team game-time he has accumulated of late since Mixu Paatelainen took over the hot seat at Easter Road.

However, Stevenson is hoping that it is a sign of things to come over the course of the season.

Included in Stark's 22-man squad, alongside Ross Campbell and Hearts' Jamie MacDonald, Lee Wallace and Calum Elliot, Stevenson said: "I'm delighted to be involved – and pretty surprised as well because I've not really featured much for the first team in the last wee while.

"So it was maybe a bit of a surprise for me, but I always think that it is a good thing to be involved with your national side.

"I am not expecting to play so anything is a bonus to me, even if I can get a seat on the bench then that will be a boost for me.

"I've not got anything to lose from this experience really, so I have just got to enjoy it as much as I can.

"It's good to know that I am still in their plans and that they are still thinking about me in terms of the national side.

"The manager spoke to us and said that he had been to a few of the pre-season games as well, so it just goes to show that they are always looking out for you and keeping an eye on your progress."

Stevenson broke into the Hibs side at the tender age of 17, becoming a regular within the year alongside the likes of Guillaume Beuzelin and Ivan Sproule.

However, he insists that, having been so young when he made the breakthrough, he always expected to find himself out of the side at some stage.

He added: "In training I feel good, but it is all up to the manager now.

"I thought that I did quite well in the games that I was involved in during pre-season but I am going into the season not expecting to play every week. I just have to take my chance when I get it – and hopefully it will come sooner rather than later.

"Everything came really quickly for me and it took a bit of getting used to because I went from being in and out of the team as a substitute to playing from the start every week.

"I'm not daft though, I knew that I wasn't going to be playing all the time. I knew that I would hit a bad spell or drop out of the side at one point because I'm still young.

"I thought that I might have come out the other side a bit quicker than I have though.

"I won't let it get me down though, I will just keep working hard and waiting for my next chance. The team has started winning so I can't expect things to be changed around too much so I will have to be patient and bide my time.

"Hopefully I am still in the managers' plans and he will use me when he needs me."

Despite being only 20 years old himself, Stevenson says he's beginning to feel like one of the club's elder statesmen with the emergence of the likes of young Paul Hanlon.

"I was only 17 when I made my debut and 18 when I started playing regularly for the side," he said.

"I'm 20 now – and sometimes I feel like one of the old ones, particularly now that Paul Hanlon has come into the side.

"It's scary how times move on. In training sometimes we play young against old and a couple of times I have found myself in the old boys' side.

"All of the new boys have played at a good standard, Joe Keenan has been exceptional. He's a good player, really good on the ball.

"Steven Thicot has also played for the French national team at one stage and counts Nasri among his friends, so it just shows you the calibre of player that we have been bringing in."

Lewis is, unfortunately, going to struggle to get back in the Hibs midfield as there are too many players for the manager to choose from and, having signed several of them himself, he will tend to play them before Stevenson. For example such players are Rankin, Keenan, Thicot and Murray. Added to those there is Morais, Chisholm and Shiels all of whom seem to be ahead of Lewis at the moment. Plus there is Zemmama to come back from injury.

Maybe a loan spell for him and others like Lynch would be the next step?

I agree, Rankin did well on Saturday, and with Zemmama returning and Gow a possibilty he'll be hard pushed. O'Brien's resurgence and Shiels current form doesnt help him either. Shame as he's a good player, sometimes.

Totally agree with Observer man Stevenson and probably the likes of Chisholm and probably Campbell could do with a spell on loan till January.

Stevenson in 1st team terms hasnt plaued a load of games so match practice would only benefit him, Hibs and the loaning club.

I rate Stevenson as a great prospect. But I'm most impressed with his attitude given his age and the fact he broke into the 1st team so young.

Well done Lewy! Keep up the good work and your chance will come!

#4 MacHibee,

Agree, it's impossible not to be impressed by this young man's attitude.

His lack of height is an issue, but I hope he makes the breakthrough this season.

Although I tend to agree with most of the above, I do think that we should be letting some of these youngsters play, rather than go out on loan. I could take a longer view and accept the mediocre results if we had a team of youngsters who were bolstered by two or three well thought out, more experienced signings.
I do not think it healthy that these lads are being blocked by older players who have been brought in that are barely any better and are unlikely to improve in the longer term.

And don't forget, he was man of the match in the CIS cup final against Killie.

I agree 100% what you write. Adding very average players like Keenan is, for me, a backward step. I believe that Stevenson for example is a better all round player than Keenan who got good marks for his performance on Saturday, but I could not see for what. He did very little and looked inferior to 40 years old Latapy.

I watch the reserves sometimes and there are two or 3 good young players there that will not be able to break through as the way is blocked by journeymen pro's like Keenan, Kerr etc. Campbell is a Scotland under 21 international but I don't think he will make it as an SPL striker. Lynch made the Scotland under 21 pool, played strongly in the reserves in the midfield and has now disappeared.

#10 NO - Sorry to disagree - many of the new crop of oung players appear to have been drilled out of all creativity. Like they attended the Brian Kerr school of midfield. They pass the ball because they are not comfortable on it - often to players in a worse position. They appear frightened of responsibility. Stevenson, as with much home grown talent, is a little like that. So I'd rather give Keenan a chance.

BTW, What's this about Alan Gow?

Who's it gonna be? ,

Hopefully all these extra midfielders will stand hibs in good stead come the middle/end of the season. Injuries will be well covered in midfield and it can't be bad having youngsters snapping at the heels of the boys who now appear to be first picks. Lots of incentive there now for our midfielders to do well each week in terms of work rate and staying awake for 90 minutes. Options for Mixu during games with playmakers and holding midfielders on the bench depending on the score line. If we happen to have a wee cup run this year, it will pay dividends.
Also nice to have a few boys in the international mix again. Maka, Shiels, Fletcher, Lewis and even McNeil at their respective age groups.
Season looks a wee bit brighter now with the news that Zoomer will make an appearance next month. Who knows, this squad might actually challenge for the 3rd spot (as they should) with the chance of taking it to the ugly sisters again. Last year Hibs ran out of steam when they had to rely on a Benji who was not interested, new signings who were out their depth and dressing room drama. I reckon Mixu is taking a firmer grasp and is steering them in a good direction.

Which midfielders have you got in mind. I am thinking for the future about young guys like Cropley, Currie and Welsh. Couple of big young strikers there too.

This lad had great potential when he first broke into the Hibs team, is he another who is unlikely to fulfil his potential??

I am not being funny I havent seen a lot of him and just wondered.
