HIBERNIAN trialist Fabian Yantorno is desperate to help end the club's dismal pre-season campaign on a high by beating Wigan Athletic tonight – and earn himself an Easter Road contract.
The Uruguayan midfielder has been battling to prove his fitness to Mixu Paatelainen since he was brought under the club's wing after his release from now defunct Gretna.

Yantorno suffered a serious knee injury playing for his former side in Janu
ary but Paatelainen stepped in to offer him facilities at Hibs' £5 million training base with the incentive of a contract if he proved himself after his recovery.

Following brief run-outs against Cowdenbeath and Clyde last week, Yantorno is now itching for a further chance having not featured in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Middlesbrough.

With Hibs kicking off their SPL season at Kilmarnock this weekend, the 25-year-old is eager to have his future resolved and hopes playing tonight can aid his cause.

Hibs have leaked a disappointing 18 goals in seven Intertoto Cup and friendly matches during a high-profile pre-season and have netted just twice, but Yantorno wants to end the poor sequence with a first victory.

Ahead of the home meeting with the Premiership team, he said: "I don't know if I'll play , but I'd like to. I'm on the squad list and I'll find out if I'm playing in the morning. I only played for 30 minutes against Clyde and before that against Cowdenbeath. I feel good, every day I feel a little bit better.

"I've spoken to Mixu and he wants to give me more minutes in a game, so hopefully I can get more time tonight. I know how much a win would lift confidence.

"If I can play a little bit more, then I'll need to speak to Mixu or look at another club.

"The season is starting this weekend so I need to know my future, if I'm staying here or looking for another side. I think Mixu is happy with me and my attitude. Hopefully I can stay. I want to stay. I've not heard from any other clubs."

Yantorno has been pleased with his rehabilitation and admits he is getting no reaction to his injury. The Montevideo-born player added: "I know I'm not yet 100 per cent fit, but as I said I'm feeling better every day.

"Maybe I can get 45 minutes or more against Wigan. I want to get fit as soon as possible."

Paatelainen knows he still needs to strengthen the squad at Easter Road, with only David Van Zanten, Steven Thicot and Joe Keenan having been added so far this summer.

The French trialist forward who impressed against Middlesbrough, setting up Steven Fletcher's second goal, will also be given another opportunity by the Hibs manager this evening.

Paatelainen said: "He can do better, I'm positive he can, and hopefully he will show an improvement.

"I have done my homework on him, I've spoken to various people about him, including Franck Sauzee, who said he believes he could be a very good player for us."

I'd keep the same back four and midfield, but put Grof in for McNeil, and play Yantorno and Sauzee' guy up front.

No point putting Grof in goals, he won't be starting against Killie, the team that starts tonight needs to be as close as possible if not the team that starts on Saturday..

If I may say so, that's a crazy idea. Firstly Yantorno is 5ft 8 inches and primarily a midfield player. Secondly, the French trialist seems to me to also be a midfielder or even a winger but not a strong striker.

If Yantorno stsrts, it will be in place of Keenan or Deano who have both done enough. The trialist could be in place of O'Brien who has done very little. This is a possible starting 11 with Jones being injured.

Grof (please!!)
van Zanten
Canning
Hogg
Hanlon
Yantorno
Thicot
Morais
Le Trialist
Nish
Fletcher

Why start with Grof?, is he any better than what we presently have?, putting him in in front of McNeill will that not de-stabalise an already shaky defence?

I think that Mixu will save some players for the Kilmarnock game and of starters tonight who would play at Kilmarnock, some will play only 45 minutes. He is keen to see Yantorno play and this is his last chance to give him a longer stint as a trialist. He is certain to play in my book. He may also give Rankin another chance (unfortunately).

OK - put Hogg in goals then he cannot deflect the ball past himself. If it were me, I would bring McCann back as van Zanten is not up to it. On Saturday I would play Canning and Jones as the central pairing. Murray has to be left out tonight as he is suspended for the early games having been sent off twice last season.

6. Rankin has had some decent games for Mixu, and he's the sort of guy who'll put pressure on those in a jersey. That said, I'd start with Yantorno and the Trialist, wherever that may be. We should give them both a good 60 minutes.

Still not quite sure that I subscribe to the theory that we need a new keeper. Cast your mind back to last season - prior to being injured, Big Maka was establishing himself, he was providing consistency between the sticks and was very unfurtunate to lose the jersey to injury. His performances after a shaky start were becoming more and more impressive.

I'd give him the jersey which would hopefully instill some confidence in the big laddie.

In the meantime, a new striker and a good solid midfielder are stand out priorities. Still don't subcsribe to the mass doom and gloom though.

#21 totally agree mate, no need for a new keeper,

A midfielder and a striker, and a left back perhaps are needed before anything else, i'm not convinced McNeil is the answer in goals, but until Maka gets back from China he's the chosen one...

Once Keenan settles in he may answer the midfield role, and really if Nish was to wake up he'd answer the striker role, which leaves the left full back
