Yantorno signs two-year Hibs deal

Published Date: 08 August 2008
FABIAN YANTORNO will end his injury nightmare today by putting pen to paper on a two-year deal at Easter Road.
The former Gretna midfielder has been training with Hibs since March after being offered the use of the club's training facilities.

The now-defunct Raydale Park outfit released Yantorno from his contract because they couldn't afford to finance his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury – the Uruguayan had ruptured the cruciate ligament in his right knee following a collision with Falkirk goalkeeper Tim Krul back in January.

Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen stepped in to offer the 25-year-old training facilities at the club's state-of-the-art complex at East Mains – and the chance to earn a deal.

The player has been given the all-clear by club medics and has clearly proved his footballing ability as well as his fitness.

Paatelainen was delighted to have secured Yantorno's signature, adding to those of David van Zanten, Joe Keenan and Steven Thicot, and the Hibs boss said:

"He will come to Easter Road on a two-year deal and we are delighted that he is joining us.

"Injuries are part and parcel of football and, unfortunately for Fabian, he suffered a very serious one at the beginning of the year.

"But he has proved that he is match fit and the doctors and the club physios have agreed that there is no problem.

"He has featured in three of our pre-season games, although he hasn't yet played 90 minutes, but that will come.

"He is a wonderful player and is tremendous technically. He has great awareness and ability to pass and his link-up play is excellent.

"He's got a great work ethic and gives everything in training and in games and he will be a great asset to our squad."

While Yantorno has agreed to make his move permanent, Paatelainen has still to make a decision on fellow trialist Steven Pinau, who has a few days left at Easter Road to win a move.

Meanwhile, out-of-favour frontman Clayton Donaldson is reported to have turned down a move to Crewe Alexandra.

The striker has been told that he is free to find another club after failing to hold down a regular place in Paatelainen's starting line-up in the last campaign, however he failed to agree terms with Crewe after talks yesterday.

While the Finn refused to rule Donaldson out of the reckoning altogether though, he warned that Donaldson may find it even tougher this time around.

He added: "If I have a player available who is free to go, but who has been working hard in training and doing well and the situation arises where I have to use him them I will do so and it is up to the player to keep his place in the side. However I am looking to bring in more players so it will be even tougher."

If Yantorno can regain full fitness and avoids recurrence, his signing will prove good business for once at Hibs. All that has been said of him is true in my opinion though I must say he looks as though he`s more suited to a midfield role. He really caught the eye in midfield for Gretna but didn`t enjoy the high service he was offered against Wigan when he was played up front. As I say, good news in a very uninspiring pre-season both by way of match form and new signings.

Yantorno has skill and strength that is lacking in some of the other small midfield players. He also delivers a good corner and free kick so goals will come from that service. A good signing in my opinion and, from what I have seen a better one than Keenan who I am not really keenon. Yantorno is a good link player and Saturday Sammy is correct - no suitable for high ball if he is played further forward. Maybe in that role Dean Shiels and he will link well with Shiels sliding in passes along the ground.

My only memories about Yantorno from last season was that he did rather like a dive or two.

However, I'm sure that once Hibs fans start booing him for doing this then he will get the message and stop.

"While the chief puts sunshine on leith" possibly the most embarassing song a football team could come out to. Although come to think of it probably does suit going by pre-season which was needless to say an embarassment for the junior green & whites. Has Mixu been giving Nish tips on keeping his fitness up? He sure looks like he will scare a few defences with his...err...movement !! Ha Real after Fletcher? What as? The waterboy? If Portillo & Soldado cant make it at Real i cant see a player who struggles to make an impact in SPL big games gracing the Bernabeu.

If he has stopped diving then surely this is a good thing? Just wish that the likes of Miller at Aberdeen, Miko at Hearts, Burke & Novo at Gers and McGeady & Nakamura at Celtic would follow suit.

PS - if Velicka repeats his Darren barr theatrics this season does anyone expect the press to go to the same lengths?

Boyd, Naismith, D'Archeville, Cousin, Novo, Miller, Lafferty, Velicka and probably a couple more I have forgotten

all to fill 2 postions. They cannot put many of them on the bench due to the under 21 requirement so what's the point? Maybe some sales coming up?

Can't see this guy offering much - but he can't be any worse than the lad Murray that came to Ibrox a few seasons ago. He tried to make the step up, but to be honest, he embarassed himself at the higher level. Think he ended up back at Hibs - probably better for him, less pressure, and surrounded by inferior players who he could relate to better.

Actually a loan deal for 1 season is not so bad. Benji was clearly of colour last season and if he plays well there he can either be sold for a decent fee, or come back to Hibs and give proper service to the team. When on song he is a great finisher but he seemed to lose interest all of last season and not just under Mixu. I have watched him in a couple of reserve games and he seems to think that playing there is beneath him. Unlike Shiels for example who, under Collins, tried hard in the reserves and now has his reward with a first team place.

Hibs have not yet announced the squad numbers for next season so maybe another signing by tomorrow? I wonder if players like Kerr and Donaldson will be given squad numbers, maybe in the high 20's or in the 30's? There is a big squad at the moment so maybe 29 for Kerr and 30 for Donaldson. Where is Gatheussi these days? Is he away on trial somewhere? I would venture that he is a cert to be found guilty!

Serious question bud, why do you think that Hearts will do so well? Is it purely becouse you have a new manager? Way I see it Hibs have stregthened the team and Hearts have not really. Obviously its too early for either of us to know the quality of the new Hibs players.

Im not going to make any predictions until I have seen all the teams in action. Right now however my gut feeling is that it will be a poor one for both of us.

Lenny. What I feel is that, for the last 2 seasons, we have had a decent bunch of players but they have had pathetic coaching and zero motivation.

The signs are that this season might be different and that is why we are confident.

Yeah,we've lost plauyers but none of them, except Ibby Tall, made a significant contribution.

BUT, we can;t expect to turn around 2 years of mis-management straight away so I fully expect an inconsistent season which will fall short of the expectations of many Jambos. Personally, i'll take a season where I don;t feel like burning the ground down in frustration!

As for Hibs, they will be the same I reckon. Win some, lose some but just as big a step into the unknown as Hearts.

I don;t think Aberdeen or Motherwell have strengthened, Dundee Utd have lost Hunt so 3rd is still the target.
71

Ronaldo Stuffed Everyone,

#69 Joking apart, I think Csaba will make a difference however we need two strikers and at least two defenders.
Hibs - Sheilds is about the best and I think he'll have a good season. Would take him in a minute. Fletcher - still not convinced. The rest of the midfield and defence are weak.
I know you won't agree, but I think Hearts are sure to improve and we could get 4th or 5th. Hibs will struggle badly towards the end of the season under Mixu.

Obviously the stories of a bust up have substance as there's no way that on potential ability/impact, this player should have been as marginalised as he has been. I cant understand the thinking. Even if there were irreconcillable differences you would have thought that hibs would have played him in the shop window and got a decent return on him. Sad end to a sorry affair.

#75 Yeah, sad indeed. I`m struggling to understand why Mixu even considered trialists all summer when he had a gem like Benji in the squad ready and waiting. This is an absolute madness and all my doubts over Pataalainen have now been realised. I couldn`t care less about Benji`s frailties, his attributes far outweighed them. Jees man, if Hibs fans criticise Benji for being lazy then what in hell`s name did they think of Riordan .... the laziest, most selfish player I`ve ever clapped eyes on ......... but what a striker eh?

Hearts have a decent squad, but last year was a total hash (for the want of a better word)

CL will have all pulling 'together' and that will make a difference. We have seen it before. A new manager comes in and changes the mentality of the players he has.

Look at teams who have had a manager come in mid season and work so called 'miracles'. He is indeed the 'Miracle Man' (tongue in cheek before i get bombarded by the Hibs contingent)

If we lose the 1st game of the season is it the end of the world?? NO!! 38 games in a season!

#83 Is that coz you've had a dose or 3?

Great signing wee Fabien but to allow Benji to leave is utter madness when we're struggling to score. He let Mikhail Ant Courier go as well & I believe he'll rue the day he allowed Benji to go. I'll not be heading to Rugby Park now as I fear the worst for this season. At least Benji had skill, guile & always did the unexpected. He got us to the final last year then scores a brace. Mixu obviously likes a big battering ram type of centre. Hoofball again in 2008/09? Not for me I'll vote with my feet.

See your out from under the bed. Was it biscuits or buckie that tempted you? Never mind the Gers are back to their level on Saturday playing with the bairns.

#86 No he calls himself semi 2006 to remind weeteamers (hobos) who have very little if anything to brag about that their team were humiliated on and off the park in the biggest derby in over a century. As your name on here suggests, you have virtually nothing to brag about and only Hearts failure's keep small minded Hobos going?! Keep suffering following your wee club, after all they do have a record of having the worst derby record in Europe!! PMSL!!

#90. Our far superior record in derby games is just an expression of our far superior record in the league.

You can't say it doesn't matter because the fact is that the hobo fans were orgasmic last season because they finished 6th in the league, but ahead of Hearts - we all know that this is hibs' only ambition.

Hearts have finished above hibs in 75% of the last 20 seasons, get used to it!

Just passed haymarket 100s of yams standing in pouring rain, with the brown tops on (yams new strip) smiling to passers by,

One fan had a cut out of the SPL trophy,
Maybe its just a festival turn?
