George Burley's side are two places and 16 points behind England, who have moved up one place to 14th.
Fabio Capello's team have overtaken Cameroon, who have dropped two places from 13th to 15th, despite not playing since their June 1 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
Wales are now placed between Saudi Arabia and Hungary in 51st position after moving up three places, while Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland hold their places in 32nd and 41st respectively.
Spain remain top of the rankings after their Euro 2008 win while the team they beat in the final, Germany, have leapfrogged Italy to move into second.
Brazil's poor World Cup qualifying form has cost them two places in the rankings as they slip to 6th, their worst ranking for 15 years.
