SIR Alex Ferguson believes South Africa has "a lot to offer" and will be equipped to host the World Cup in two years' time.
A number of concerns have been expressed about the nation's ability to complete building work and stage the tournament.

The main focus appears to centre on whether new stadia will be finished in time and whether there will be adequate transport li
nks.

But the Manchester United manager is confident the authorities will rise to the challenge and put on a show for global football fans.

Ferguson said: "South Africa has a lot to offer. Yes they have a job to do in terms of infrastructure. But they can manage that because they have major areas to host games in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

"Johannesburg, which is the biggest platform for the World Cup, is a massive city and area. From a professional point of the view, the stadiums at the moment are great. They deserve a chance."

Ferguson has seen a massive change in the South African sporting landscape in the past few years as the country continues to bounce back from apartheid.

"The country is growing – it is a developing country," said the United manager.

"It is also a sporting country. The changes have been phenomenal since Nelson Mandela (who was released from prison in 1990) came back. South Africa has got a great future and deserves a chance."

Ferguson believes club football in South Africa is also beginning to develop.

United have had two tough, physical games in the last week against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the Vodacom Challenge.

The fact that former Dutch star Rudi Krol is now in charge of the Pirates is an indication that coaching standards are also being raised.

United chalked up a 1-0 victory against Krol's side on Tuesday but not without a fight, and Ferguson has nothing but admiration for the man who was in the opposition dug-out.

He said: "He was one of the most fantastic players I ever saw. To me there was Cruyff, who was world class, and then Krol. He was a magnificent player."

Ferguson expects another hard work-out for his side tomorrow, whether it is against the Pirates or Kaizer Chiefs, who play for the chance to face United.

United then move on to Nigeria and a friendly against Portsmouth on Sunday before flying home.

Johannesburg.... is a massive city and area. .... They deserve a chance

Alright for Ferguson & other dignitaries ferried around by armed police and shacked up in luxurious fortress hotels. Mere serfs like the rest of us will potentially have to put up with rampant, indiscriminate gun crime, literally zero safe transport and HIV epidemic. I almost hope we don't qualify as Joburg especailly is quite terrifying!

Send the Celtic craicsters who'll spread peace & love and sort it out

I'll leave the politics to one side, but I will go further than #1 and state that i hope Scotland do not qualify for the finals should they be held in RSA. This is no means a certainty despite Mr ferguson's opinion.

Regarding the football, the extremely healthy financial strength of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs when compared to the other PSL clubs does not regularly show itself in the final league position and is seldom exhibited in the CAF cups. Ferguson has to try and show that these are the best clubs in RSA because the better sides who finished higher than OP & KC last season (Supersport Utd, Ajax CT, Santos, Sundowns and Free State Stars) are left out of this money fest for millionaires sponsored by Vodacom. Did any journalist ask why he was palying the 6th and 8th best teams in RSA?

It would appear that the super rich only really take care of each other.

Going to Jo'burg and SA again next month visiting family etc.Hope to catch up with the Joburg Celts for a game or two!!!!

Looking forward to checking out the stadia and seeing the progress from last year for World Cup 2010.

I hope Scotland do qualify and SA proves itself a worthy host of this huge event.Be another huge step for a great country.

Yes there are social problems and violence in Jo'burg is an issue however the people are extremely friendly, love their football and the weather is great.

When you do visit just keep your wits about you(Glesga style) and it will be all good in the hood.

Hello Robbo,

I've got a good mate who's moved back to Cape Town from England and we visited him there last year-fantastic place though we over did it on the wine at his old place in Stellenbosch!!!!

I have to be honest before I visited Jo'burg I was a little apprehensive due to press coverage which my partner who is from Soweto was rather amused by-'Don't believe everything you read in the press'

After 48 hours in Joburg I thought 'this place is awesome'.

Met many expats on our travels who only had good things to say about their adopted country despite the crime.

Glad to hear the stadiums going well in Cape Town as we won't make it over there next month by the looks of things.

We'll be getting married in Swaziland in December,so will be regular visitors to a truly great country.
