LEWIS Hamilton and McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen were due to start this morning's Malaysian Grand Prix well down the grid after being demoted five places for impeding Nick Heidfeld and Fernando Alonso by driving too slowly during qualifying.
It provides a major boost for Ferrari, for whom Felipe Massa claimed pole position with team-mate Kimi Raikkonen alongside him on the front row. The Italian team are looking to bounce back from a disastrous opening weekend in Melbourne which saw both drivers fail to take the chequered flag.

Hamilton and Kovalainen qualified fourth and third respectively, but, having crossed the line with seconds remaining, they chose to slow dramatically, preventing BMW Sauber driver Heidfeld and Renault's Alonso from completing flying laps.

It means championship pace-setter Hamilton will now start ninth with team-mate Kovalainen one place in front.
