MOTHERWELL have refused Hearts permission to speak to manager Mark McGhee.
McGhee steered Motherwell to third place and UEFA Cup qualification in his first year at Fir Park, while Hearts finished in eighth.
The Motherwell board are eager to keep McGhee. A club statment said: "Motherwell Football Club can today confirm that it has received an official approach from Heart of Midlothian Football Club, seeking permission to speak with current manager Mark McGhee about the vacant managerial role at Tynecastle.
"After consideration, the Motherwell FC board of directors have decided to refuse this request."
McGhee is understood to have already agreed to the move on principle, but is still finalising details of his contract.
"We have requested permission from Motherwell to speak to their manager about the possibility of him becoming the new manager of Hearts," a spokesman for the Tynecastle club said yesterday.
If McGhee does move east, he is expected to take Scott Leitch, his assistant manager, with him.
Stephen Frail, who has been Hearts' caretaker manager since the turn of the year, has been offerred another coaching post at the club, but it is uncertain if he will accept that or choose to move on.
