Published Date: 23 May 2008
MOTHERWELL have refused Hearts permission to speak to manager Mark McGhee.
McGhee steered Motherwell to third place and UEFA Cup qualification in his first year at Fir Park, while Hearts finished in eighth.

The Motherwell board are eager to keep McGhee. A club statment said: "Motherwell Football Club can today confirm that it has received an official approach from Heart of Midlothian Football Club, seeking permission to speak with current manager Mark McGhee about the vacant managerial role at Tynecastle.

"After consideration, the Motherwell FC board of directors have decided to refuse this request."

McGhee is understood to have already agreed to the move on principle, but is still finalising details of his contract.

"We have requested permission from Motherwell to speak to their manager about the possibility of him becoming the new manager of Hearts," a spokesman for the Tynecastle club said yesterday.

If McGhee does move east, he is expected to take Scott Leitch, his assistant manager, with him.

Stephen Frail, who has been Hearts' caretaker manager since the turn of the year, has been offerred another coaching post at the club, but it is uncertain if he will accept that or choose to move on.

#2 why not come back in a year and we'll be able to tell you

the same old, same old ownership got us a scottish cup, second in the league and into the CL (yes, INTO the CL as CL qualifying stages ARE part of the competition according to UEFA. I suspect they know better than anyone else)

I'm optimistic

Maybe he'll get them into the top 6 next year. Take about 3 years to sort the mess out at Hearts and he'll end up resigning due to Vladimir's interference on team selection. Stay at Motherwell and lead them into Europe Mark!

Why would McGhee want the Hearts job with that muppet Romanov pulling the strings? No disrespect to Hearts, but it would hardly be a step up.

#8 McGhee will only take the job if there's some money on the table to overhaul the squad. May not be 12m, but Hearts still have a credit limit available and have been cutting costs and releasing players in preparation for bringing in some new faces - I hope in a more sensible way than last time. Hope we get a full coaching team in place, too, starting with bringing Elvis back and keeping Frail.

Could be a great appointment, if a risky one as if he does well the OF ad EPL (and Scotland if Burley goes to, say, Rangers in a year) but that goes for any manager in Scotland. I've come to accept that under Romanov Hearts will not be very stable, but even one year of stability under a McGhee would be a start. That's why Jim Jeffries was my top choice - proven SPL manager unlikely at his age to go anywhere else or be targeted by bigger clubs.

Spot on there mate. IMO McGhee's biggest asset is his ability to find good players for little money. I assume this is one of the main reasons Hearts are going for him. Warchest is complete pie in the sky. Some people will believe anything.

#23 Right, because all you need is a team of Scotsmen to achieve something... that's why Scotland have always done so well. Incidentally, Hearts have been playing more Scots than a few clubs, including Hibs, this last season. The right players in the right positions given time to settle and playing to a system they understand is all any team needs, regardless of nationality.

The free hand thing is what's being sorted out. The good thing is we can have an end to the "fax machine" gibes if McGhee joins as we'll know he's got control, although the fax machine hasn't been in operation since Frail took over - apart from players who get dropped because their agents are playing silly beggars. "Wild-eyed, giddy" - sounds good to me. Rather that than the Hibs fans who turn up like the morose, grumpy uncle at a wedding. Give me embarrasing dancers any day - more fun.

IF McGhee is going to take the managers job he MUST be left to do things his way.But get him in now if hes the choosen one and let him get rid of the dross that are meant to be footballers. I hope he starts with NADE what a waste of money he has proved to be,but there are a few more just like him. There is a lot of work ahead in sorting out the crap that we have. I hope Frail after all the work he has put into the Club will accept another job within the Hearts regime. But will Romanov keep out of the way I doubt it very much.

Back in January, after Collins jumped, MM was being touted as a possible replacement at ER. Quite rightly, following the death of Phil O'Donnell he stayed put.

Simple question Jambos on here this sunny afternoon, would you have been happy with him back in Jan? Or has he proven he could get it right since then?

30

Happy Hibee,

Don't normally comment on HMFC stories, but McGee would be good for the Hearts.

He has shown in the past that he is his own man, the question is whether Romanov will leave him to manage the playing staff or will the pair of them last a few months then fall out ?

If he gets rid of some of the East European numpties you have on the books and gets in some players who give a damn things will improve.

#11 Victorian,

Put away man... it's not polite to be creaming yourself like that in public!

Hey, if McGhee signs up as Hearts boss, I look forward to the abuse. I have said many times that I can't believe he would actually take the job. I really have no idea what's happening these days, save to say that reality really is stranger than fiction.

I look forward to a summer of the loyalists on here giving it tight to Hibs, all other fans, all Jambos who don't BELIEVE, and anyone else who expresses their doubts.
34

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

23/05/2008 16:32:38
I'm not sure why people think McGhee wouldn't take the job if he can control the team. Fair enough - he'd have a difficult boss to work with but that's hardly enough to turn down huge money to do something you enjoy, managing a club with undoubted potential? I still think Strachan might jump ship while he's on top and McGhee could go there - if not this season, then next.
35

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

23/05/2008 16:34:41
#38 Strickly speaking, with a pre-approved credit limit of 40m, we probably do have 12m to spend after the recent transfers and releases, and a very large reduction in the wage bill. But I would rather focus on youth with a few good pros thrown in personally for a fraction of that amount.
36

Indigo Nightlight,

23/05/2008 16:40:44

That's no the way it works though, is it? The £12m in transfer fees only means that we will probably make a profit in the next accounts, it certainly won't be a £12m profit though. We made massive losses last year, and our interest payments will be on a far larger sum this year. I'd estimate £3-4m of that at the very maximum would come off the debt. Which is better than nowt, but until wages are a much lower percentage of turnover we are continuing to spend far too much.

There is no doubt that McGhee is a good manager, but more often than not guys like Mark do well with lower teams because the expectations are so low. There is no pressure to win, no pressure press to deal with, so it is easier. But once he is put into a position in which he needs to win, I am not so sure he will be as effective.
No disrespect to Mr McGhee, he is an icon of Scottish football and he was a tremendous player but Hearts need a bigger manager! Problem is, managers know that working at Hearts will mean answering to the Romanov's and that just isnt very appealing.
39

FINLAYBAR,

23/05/2008 16:47:14
lets just wait and see if he comes.

cant believe for a moment that he would even consider comming to us if he hasn t got full control of all aspects of the playing side and for that reason i dont think he will.

how is vlad going to react when he tells him that the lithuaniun lads in the squad are not of the desired standard and have to go. not well i would have thought. the worst bit is miko is now one of the better ones!

too many players have plenty of ability but dont care enough about the club. overpaid and under motivated. they need to be moved on but will vlad be man enough to admit he has got it all wrong?

the squad needs to be halved in size at least.

12 million on new players! nice thought but that is not going to happen.
40

Indigo Nightlight,

23/05/2008 16:54:23
Anyway, rather than spending vast sums of money, I'd rather see us get rid of the non-achievers in the current squad. He worked wonders with a team who nearly got relegated the previous season so it would be interesting to see what he makes of the players at Hearts. I think every player at the club should be assessed by him (as they were under Birley) and maybe he can get a better return out of some of the talented players we have.

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

#42 We don't need to make a profit to spend 12m - it's just Ukio have approved an overall borrowing of 40m, and we're not near it yet in real terms, not last year's accounts. I also don't want anywhere near that spent on the team though. Motherwell rejected the approach but then the SFA turned down Birmingham City for McLeish and that still happened. Still hope it goes through.
44

Mike D W,

I know this is a Hearts thread and I'm a Hibee, but just want to say a couple of things.

I think Mark McGhee would be a very good manager for any SPL team, including the Old Firm. Therefore, Hearts should go after him.

However, I am amazed that McGhee is considering this as he has done very well at 'Well and should be looking to build on that success.

Money talks and loyalty is non-existent.

He might be using Hearts to get more money at Motherwell or entice club down south to bid for his services. Or he might just think he can be the man to make Hearts great.

Good luck to him and to Hearts. However, if I was a Motherwell fan, I would be furious.

I really hope this happens. This is exactly what we need an established manager who is 100% picking the team and is definitely not a puppet. there will always be doubts over an inexperienced or lithuianian manager over what influence is being exerted from Vlad. I think most Jambos would welcome McGee and at the end of the day if he has agreed terms with hearts then there is not a lot Motherwell can do!

If twenty five years of following football has taught me nothing more, it has taught me that it's always a gamble when you appoint a manager. We could appoint Mourinho....it might just not work out or we could appoint an untested manager from the Scottish third Division (Levein) and he might do well. The bottom line is whomsoever we appoint he must be allowed to do his job.
54

Andrew BOD,

Aberdeenshire 23/05/2008 23:07:11
If this is to go ahead then I sincerely wish Hearts all the best. Anything that will challenge the dominance of the old firm and will improve Scottish football. McGhee like Burley, will definitely do the biz for the club, but the real question is: Will he be allowed to? Vlad has this club in a financial stranglehold which can be a double-edged sword. He needs to change for Hearts to be a real success.

Aberdeen should have gone for Levein or McGhee when JC's contract was up at Pittodrie. He's taken them as far as he can and will only ever be challenging for third place.

Genial (59)is dead right. If McGhee comes and Vlad just concentrates on the business end of the club we might do very well.

Despite the fact that I have posted stinging criticisms of the current regime, I would still much prefer our position to that of our friends in the East. I do not for a moment believe that winning the PL is beyond us if the club is properly managed.

The sky is the limit for a Capital City, progressive club.

Let's hope Vlad has seen the error of his ways and we will be storming back into contention for everything in a few short months.
