MARK McGHEE has told Hearts he will not be pursuing their managerial vacancy after backing out of a planned eight-day trip to Lithuania yesterday.
The Tynecastle club confirmed there will be no further discussions about luring McGhee to Tynecastle.

The Evening News can reveal he spoke with Mindaugas Nikolicius, a financial expert from Vladimir Romanov's Ukio Bankas Investment Group, today to convey the message that he would remain as manager of Motherwell.

"Hearts today confirmed that Mark McGhee will not be interviewed for the vacant managerial position at Tynecastle," said a statement on the club website.

"The club continues its search for a new manager who can meet the aims of the board in delivering on-field success for Hearts."

Hearts were refusing to give up on their pursuit of McGhee this morning as he has yet to sign a new deal at Fir Park.

However, following a telephone call between Nikolicius and McGhee, who is at home in Brighton, Romanov has reluctantly accepted that he must now look elsewhere for the man who will transform Hearts.

McGhee failed to board his flight to Lithuania yesterday afternoon, where he was scheduled to spend an astonishing eight days negotiating terms with Romanov for the Hearts vacancy.

As he waited at London's Stansted airport for a flight to Vilnius, a persuasive phone call from Motherwell chairman John Boyle convinced him to rethink his intentions.

Although the Fir Park club posted a statement on their website last night claiming negotiations had been "successfully concluded" to keep their manager, Hearts believed they had a chance of persuading him to swap Lanarkshire for Edinburgh.

McGhee and his assistant, Scott Leitch, have been offered a salary increase by Motherwell but nothing in the region of the £375,000 a year Romanov had dangled in front of McGhee.

Leitch was due to fly out to Lithuania today to engage in further talks with Romanov alongside McGhee, however that plan has also been aborted.

Nikolicius wanted to give McGhee every opportunity to rekindle negotiations today and but the former Leicester City, Wolves, Millwall and Brighton manager has declined the chance to replace Hearts' outgoing caretaker Stephen Frail.

McGhee had previously met Romanov face to face for initial discussions but the Russian businessman will now focus on alternative names on his managerial shortlist.

I am utterly ashamed at the mess Hearts are in.

Before people start berating me I would ask you to hear me out. Whether you believe McGhee is the right man for the job or not the fact remains that he was the club's first choice.
Hearts aproached MOTHERWELL to take their manager with an offer of more than three times his salary and the chance to come to a club with the third biggest fan base in Scotland and the fact he even had to think about it tells it's own story for me never mind the fact that he turned it down.

You have to be honest here guys it was not because Motherwell will play two games in the UEFA cup next season that he didn't sign was it?

Levein left us part way through a UEFA Cup campaign to move to the Championship.

I think that the statement about hearts being a bigger job and not a better job tells you everything you need to know about what caused this deal to fall through

Oh dear he's obviously waiting on the hobbits job around January next year in the vain hope of the Celtic job coming up the year after, he may regret this descision as Motherwell could easily be in the relegation mire next season and we'll see what kind of loyalty they then display to him. Vlad bite the bullet and go and get Craig Levein now!!

To be so public about their interest when it now appears to be quite obvious that a McGhee deal wasn't 'Done and Dusted' (like many jambos have claimed for months), just shows the arrogance of the people that run Hearts. Who do they go for now. The next 'candidate' will now knowhe's second choice and that he will have to place a clause in his contract to do his job.... namely pick the team.
22

Chas Niceass,

27/05/2008 12:35:24
You know, this is no bad thing. Quite the opposite of what many think, this is the dawn of realisation for Hearts hierarchy.

Managers are not ten-a-penny, not of the value of a Burley or a McGhee anyhow. They cant be dispensed with at a whim.

Whoever may get the job next, assuming he has credence, can probably thank Mark McGhee for ensuring they will get a fair crack.

I dont think Romanov can gamble on an Eastern European any longer, it doesnt work and he will lose, football matches and money.

As for McGhee, you cant knock his decision but ultimately whatever Boyle has said to him I would imagine was tantermount to emotional blackmail and will more than likely end in tears in the not too distant future.

Only a smidgeon of disappointment, candidates aren't leaping to mind but personally I'd like to see Aidy Bothroyd in the frame.

This is all now down to Hearts compensation package - Hearts offered £75,000 - Mothwerwell want £200,000...

Hearts will get him for £125,000/150,000

Dinnae panic - Vlad is willing to go to £250,000 The Wookie

Will at least have the cohonies to come back on and admit they were wrong and apologise. However my opinion on this is they will shirk away and change usernames, so be prepared for lots of new names appearing shortly, Some have already started to appear.

Thats not how business is done in Easter Europe though lad...

Any prospective "employee" must bow before the great man who is willing to give him a job in the first place.

Us in the West are all nuts about how we run business dont you know if Vlad is to be believed.... Unions? Benifits? Do your job without "state" intervention? Absurd, ludicrous, corrupt even...... We need not listen to those with expertise as a Tsar such as myself knows all... & when it goes wrong I'll blame everyone bar myself and go and hide in my submarine before entering a dancing competition...

Hence McGhee's snagglepuss impersionation by "exit, stage left....."

Such vitriol from the Hibs lot today. Deary me, its only someone nae wanting to shift job because there is a very obvious emotional attachment.

Calm down lads, they hadn't even got close to deciding whether it would be a Canon or whether they would purchase 2 new blackberries (far more modern you know!)

If Vlad is going to continue to pick the team does it really matter whether or not the manager is a Lith ??

You say that foreign managers have not worked but did they have any more say over the team than Rix or Frail. Where the manager is from isnt really the problem.

Besides, we have a big Finn, and the previous bloke ( who's name escapes me ) must have been foreign as well, judging by the suntan.

"MR ROMANOV" will now turn his attention to a siberian sand monkey called butch with a bumper salary of £1million peanuts per week, Butch is said to be mulling over the move and could become Hearts of midlithuanias new manager within the next few days. He is poised to bring Edward Malofeev as his number 2, Malofeev was also spotted at his local Machine Mart placing an order for 25 new wheel barrows
42

Chas Niceass,

mon-the-hertz,

I think Boyle will have told MM carry on with the good job you're doing now and an improved job offer will come eventually (eg Celtic). There's more to some jobs than just money and over this last year MM has built a relationship with Motherwell in a similar way Levein has built one with Dundee United. Both of these 2 would be good for Hearts but it's not the end of the world if we don't get them - in our current state a lot of managers out there will be an improvement for Hearts.

And to all the Hearts muppets that gloated about him signing I hope you're happy to put up with the Hibs muppets gloating now. There's too many wee daft kids that ruin this board from both teams.

Romanov will have to tread very carefully with his next moved now. There has been an uneasy tolerance of the performances towards the end of the season as Hearts fans have been given the impression Mr Romanov has seen the error of his ways and was ready to go down a different path and improvements (starting with a decent manager with full control)would be made.

If Hearts end up with yet another yes man and promises are again broken it will be the straw that breaks the camels back for most fans.

What is funny here from the hibees point of view is not the fact you lost out on Mcghee (because we never thought he would go), but idiots such as 'Wookie' and others who said it was a done deal, McGhee on his way, mccormack to come with him, 15 million war chest, I have that from a 'credible' source. But if you think about it, why was he about to fly to Lithuania. Because he wanted the job or to talk about it. He's not getting more money from Well than Hearts offered, now I know they had a good year but generally Hearts do do better than Motherwell.
There is only one thing that sticks in my mind and bearing in mind how poignant Sunday afternoon must have been at Parkhead, there is little doubt in my mind, the emotion spent at that club is the tieing factor to Fir Park for Mark McGhee.

Not once did you hear anything from within Tynecastle saying it's a done deal - it's nearly signed etc. It was all said by pi*s poor journalists who thought they'd jump the gun to write an exclusive and who now look stupid.
And for all those who think it was just publicity to get more people to buy season tickets - get a grip. I doubt many people went and bought season tickets on the back of that and if it was publicity - why was McGhee on a plane to Lithuania?!
We'll get a manager one way or another and will be above Hibs next season. Whether that's in the top or bottom 6 i don't know but Mixu is a ball bag of a manager and is taking Hibs down with him.

As a Dons fan i think McGhee has just made the biggest mistake of his career not taking the Hearts job. Lets face it, in the SPL we have had the worst season for a long time and only because of some dodgy refereeing did we end up 4th instead of 3rd. Motherwell bottled it near the end of the season and were very lucky to land 3rd. Im sure every other top flight team outside of the OF would agree that they were pretty poor this season. Next season everyone will up their game and motherwell will be fighting for relegation. After Accies performance at Pittodrie theres no way they are going down next season.

I think Mark should have phoned Neil Cooper (ex AFC legend) what its like to be a manager with no money and staying at home with your mum. When Mark is jobless he'll wish he took the £425k on offer.

Good luck Motherwell next season , you will need it.

Aberdeen clearly have a bigger fan base that Hearts. They may not have a full house at every home game but how often do hearts sell out their entire allocation at every away match?

and yes i admit that Hibs are probably the fifth largest fan base in Edinburgh behind Chesney Hawkes!!

He wasnt our 1st choice but is a good manager and thats why we held out. it hasnt happend and thats that so we will move on and keep looking.

thats football.

we will have a guy in place for next season and i for one dont care where he comes from as long as he can get the players playing then thats all that really matters.

Maroon Specs

John Collins was the manager and he left as he felt that he had taken the club as far as he could.

Which meant that he wanted the Fulham job. That is why he is ridiculed. He played decent football but lacked the guile and egde or Mr Mowbray.

#51 Victorian "we'll get someone eventually" that really fills me with confidence in our search for a Manager that can do the job and deal with the interference.

Chas there is no way that you will get Elton John as your next manager. He would not put up with Vlad, he just wouldn't!

"McGhee turns down Hearts manager job to stay at Motherwell"

So judging by the headline he was offered the job..Nope i dont think so.He was offered an interview and didnt want it.

I questioned the ambition of MM yesterday on these boards and am pleasantly suprised that he has chosen not to enter the race for the job.
Good..Now onto the next bod.

It has been very quiet the last few days without the usual Hobo experts chuntering on about all things Hearts.
Glad to have you back for a wee while anyway.

#84 So what you are really saying is that Aberdeen "Clearly" have a bigger away fan base than Hearts. The hardcore fans if you like. Obviously in your eyes selling out your home games is less of an indication of your fan base than selling out your away games!!! Hmmm ... interesting way of looking at things!

Ok I know I'll get grief for posting this but who is in the frame now, realistically?

Billy Davies

Craig Levein (Prob won't come)

Jimbo Jeffries (Wouldn't take him)

Aidy Boothroyd (Not sure if he would leave championship)

Graeme Sounness (always touted for it)

And here's some outragous suggestions but you never know:

Nevio Scala (although he's not British he's been touted before)

George Graham (been out of football for a while)

Steve Clark (No 2 at Chelsea for years wants a shot on his own)

Alan Irvine (Preston Manager may look to SPL as a step up?)

David O Leary (He aint worked in a while)

Peter Reid (Former Sunderland gaffer)

Steve Mclaren (Low profile job to come back into)

Sam Allardyce (Again may relish the opportunity)

Martin Jol (has anyone offered him a job lately?)

Brian Laudrup (his brothers a decent gaffer)

Brian McLair (respected Man Utd coach)

Alan Shearer (beggining to run out of ideas)

Paul Lambert (Wouldn't take him)

Geovanni Trapatonni (Pull out the big guns)

Joe Jordan (Portsmouth coach and former Jambo)

I'll await for the usual..."No-one in their right mind would come to Hearts" and "There's more chance of Duncan Shearer being the new Hearts manager", "Keep on living in dreamland" etc etc.

But hey, all I'm doing is throwing some names out there, even though most would probably never come.

Anyone else got any suggestions I can pass on to Vlad, apart from the old Pinochio ones...

Ach. We have to hope there's a second choice here, they've had 5 months to come up with a list after all! As far as I'm concerned, all that's happened is we've asked for an interview with our first choice, and he's said no. Not the end of the world by a long shot. Time to judge is when we see the next steps, I just hope it's not a repeat of what happened to Newcastle - a short list of 1, offer turned down, and the panic appointment of whoevers easiest. Except in our case "whoevers easiest" would be some random Eastern European.
I'm not judging this mob on what they say they'll do with regard to a propoer manager, only what they do do. They've not done anything yet. Jury still out.

#103 GrahamL I agree with you, although I am always sceptical when it comes to Vlad, just because there has been no announcements coming out about the planned approaches for the job doesn't mean there are no plans for further approaches.

#83 you on the sheep dropping liquor again!!!! Dodgy refereeing decisions got you into the top 6 (Inverness and Falkirk). Motherwell ran all over most teams in the division this year (excepy maybe the OF). Yes they stuttered a bit towards the end but ended up 7 points clear of your garbage lot. I hope you enjoy watching Ritchie Foran tearing up the wings next season, well tearing up pubs anyway. What a joke team Aberdeen are.

I guess thats why the call it the blues.

Media Scotland, why would Irvine be tempted out of the Championship and not Bothroyd. I guess I know why you say that, after a spell in the Premier but that would rule out a good few on your list.

Lets go for Aidy.

AIDY IN AIDY IN

Thats my last post for AIDY today, before my employer cuts me off at 2, bad sh*t that!

As a Hearts fan I am now used to being kicked while I am already down.

It is depressing being a Jambo at the moment.

When will our club get some stability?

We truly are a laughing stock and I'm not surprised that the rest of the Scottish football community are enjoying the latest twist in the Tynecastle circus, god knows how much longer my sanity will hold out!

#108 Aye, there's a few folk round here bemoaning the lack of a plan B. McGhee only said no a couple of hours ago, I'm prepared to give Vlad a wee bit longer to make an approach to someone else. Not that I'm holding my breath mind...

105 not bad,

kinda throws out conversation from last night out the window.

Not going to cry over spilt milk as (even though i will take pelters from non jambo's) we are the only team in the SPL able to put up a decent fight to the OF (this season was a blimp) so lets get a manager in and get ready for the new season.
109

Johhny Jambo,

My sources (who have never been right yet) tell me Jimmy "Jaffa" Calderwood is next in line. His eye for a player (Duff, Consideine, Bus, Mackie and the evr improving Richardinho Foster) has proven attractive to Romanov. Also as a mini bear he will fit right in and no need to worry about not trying against Rangers.

Johnny Jambo,

#115 - Yes Graham I am not holding mine either, I think too many of Vlads decisions aremade on the hoof. Maybe he saw the press reporting over the last few weeks and said "Oh aye Hertz fans want McGhee I will just haud a wee chat wi him an see what he says" with nothing as back up.

I fear we will end up with another puppet, probably Eastern European.

#117 "this season was a blimp" A blimp is a balloon so you right there. Hearts went down the league like a lead balloon this season.

I understand from a good inside source ( not the same one as Wookie)that Graham Rix was on the list for a quick return due to the success he had which has not been matched, but he has also turned it down in favour of a job in Spain for Glenn Hoddle.

#122 JT&T yes I know, I was just having a wee bit of light relief.
But Most of Vlads decisions are made in that manner, I doubt if he really has a short list and even if he has who on that list would even want to talk about this "Poisoned Chalice" of a job.
