A ROSS FORBES volley and Eggert Jonsson's dismissal completed a miserable afternoon for Hearts in Lanarkshire as the Edinburgh club suffered a defeat at the hands of Jim Gannon's impressive Motherwell.

Ross Forbes (left) gives Motherwell the lead in the 55th minute

From Yassin Moutaouakil's 55th-minute cross, Forbes drove a powerful volley beyond Janos Balogh to open the scoring. Twelve minutes later Jonsson tugged the shirt of the outstanding Jim O'Brien and, having denied a clear scoring opportunity, was instantly shown a red card.

Ironically, Hearts produced their best football of the afternoon between Jonsson's early exit and the final whistle but, despite seven minutes of stoppage-time, an equaliser remained elusive.

With midweek goalscorer Michael Stewart precluded by an ankle complaint, Jonsson returned to the starting 11 in a holding midfield role but was a picture of frustration leaving the field early and must now serve a suspension to boot.

Jose Goncalves assumed the captaincy against a capable looking Motherwell attack, with O'Brien supporting the imposing figures of John Sutton and Lukas Jutkiewicz. It was O'Brien who first threatened when he fell inside the box under Ismael Bouzid's 13th-minute challenge, prompting howls for a penalty from the Lanarkshire crowd. Referee David Somers remained impassive.

Motherwell's pressure continued and only the fingertips of Balogh prevented Shaun Hutchinson heading the opening goal. Following Sutton's chested lay-off, Jutkiewicz's first-time attempt bounced wide. Hearts required to gain a foothold in midfield but their efforts were countered by the lively Giles Coke, Tom Hateley and Ross Forbes, who were both industrious and creative in equal measure. O'Brien flighted a free-kick across goal on 30 minutes which begged a conversion as it bounced across the six-yard area. Forbes then struck an indirect free-kick into the crowd after Goncalves was judged to have played a backpass to Balogh.

After the interval, play resumed with the hosts still probing. O'Brien volleyed Sutton's lay-off narrowly wide from 18 yards and Ruben Palazuelos, bandaged due to a cut head sustained in the first half, was forced off for further treatment. He had only just returned when Forbes struck. Moutaouakil's deep right-sided cross was met by the midfielder's precise left-footed volley and, although Balogh got a hand to the ball, he was beaten by its sheer power.

Injury curtailed Christian Nade's involvement shortly before the hour mark and he was stretchered off to be replaced by Gary Glen. Any hope that the alteration might imbue Hearts with a greater sense of purpose was in vain, though, as the visitors were soon reduced to ten men with Jonsson's dismissal. The Icelandic international attempted to nod a bouncing ball back to Balogh under pressure from O'Brien, and his tame header allowed his opponent to take possession. Jonsson then tugged O'Brien back on the edge of the penalty area and incurred the subsequent red card for a professional foul.

Hearts seemed to derive some inspiration from the ordering off and went on the ascendency. Andy Driver's run and cross was perfectly placed for Glen to score but his left-footed attempt from six yards was blocked by John Ruddy, the hitherto largely anonymous Motherwell goalkeeper.

David Obua, another inactive figure, brought the loudest cheer of the afternoon from the travelling support when he was substituted on 88 minutes. Six minutes previously the Hearts fans had jeered Craig Thomson's withdrawal given that he was one of few in maroon who achieved pass marks. The others were Jose Goncalves, Lee Wallace and Ruben Palazuelos, but overall it was a day to forget for the Tynecastle side.

Motherwell (4-3-1-2): Ruddy; Moutaouakil, Saunders, Hutchinson, Reynolds; Coke, Hateley, Forbes; O'Brien; Sutton, Jutkiewicz. Subs: Fraser, Humphrey 75 (for Forbes), Jennings, Lasley 85 (for Jutkiewicz), Murphy 85 (for O'Brien), Archdeacon, Page.

Hearts (4-2-3-1): Balogh; C Thomson, Bouzid, Goncalves, Wallace; Jonsson, Palazuelos; Obua, Black, Driver; Nade. Subs: Kello, Kucharski, Witteveen 88 (for Obua), Novikovas 82 (for C Thomson), J Thomson, Glen 59 (for Nade), Mulrooney.

Referee: David Somers.

Attendance: 4830.

Oh look, we didn't score. That's unusual. So in 3 games we've managed one goal and that was from a penalty. Hibs must be shaking in their boots ahead of next week.

Much as it pains me to say it I think it's well worth a wager on the wee team next week. Wouldn't be too bothered losing money if we win tho!

Skinnybob squarepants so why do you assume that #1 is a knucklescraper cos he has a go at your DIDDY team.Your lot have as many bigoted knucklescrapers as Rangers and you know it.Having a go at the diddy team doesn't make him a knucklescraper! As for putting a bet on the wee team go ahead but they have a big fat lump who plays up front on his own cos the poor wee team can't afford to but any strikers. If you ask Yogi nicely he might lend you one of ours for the derby just to give our defenders a bit more to do.GIRUY

SIGH!!!!
Pathetic, how i long for the days of old when we, the mighty Hearts could compete with the likes of the mighty Motherwell, Hibs, Dundee utd or St Johnstone.
Could be second bottom next week, on the flip side we could pretend the 3 way fight for 8th place is exciting, nahh that just doesnt work.
Ta ta Shaba and to be honest good riddance, cant read anymore of his post match comments to much drivel.

Total p1sh yet again when it really matters in the league, not really a surprise but hey ho we go into the derby as extreme underdogs and it could well be another defeat. This season has been a joke we just cannot score worth a....

On you go Hibees - have a laugh at us. You deserve it because you're playing decent football while we're playing rubbish. However, in my lifetime we've always been better than you and i have the memories to prove it. I doubt your run will last but who knows - maybe you'll finish 3rd and if you do you'll deserve it. I'd rather you did than Aberdeen or the Arabs.
Don't get too cocky though - derbies tend to throw up the odd surprise.

Highly disappointing news that Christian Nade could be missing for the derby next week.

Yes, John Hughes is bitterly disappointed that the £8k a week (roughly £400k a year - arf!) star frontman may not be in the Hearts line up.

But hang on, Yogi's smile has just re-appeared. It would appear that David Pittenweem will replace him.

It may well do. I don't do derby predictions, never have. And I'm painfully aware that we don't have a great record when we're on the front foot.

I also tend not to frequent these threads in the run up to a derby due to the petty, pointscoring idiots who boast about what they're going to do to the opposition on the park.

Whilst I'm being constructive, Hearts supporters need to take a right good look at what's going on. A manager who is either two-faced or schizophrenic (please see a weeks worth of press interviews for corroborative evidence for this statement), a team of players who are disjointed, over paid primadonnas and an owner who is ripping the proverbial out of you.

All statements of fact.

so much hate and anger from the hobo's on here tonight!
However, fair play, they are getting results, and we are not... in the same situation, i would milk it for all I could.
I actualy dont mind hibs doing well, and, applaud them on their ability to keep producing good young players.
I would take any number of ambitious, dedicated local guys playing for Hearts before some of the total imposters we have wearing the jersey.
Laszlo might have had a decent season last year, but, the test of a good manager is following that up with a better one the next season.
Granted, we lost Karipidis and Aguair, our 2 best players by a mile, but thats all.... who else did we lose that was a star? not Neilson, as Thomson id a better player already.... so, what is wrong?
Easy answer really... the direction of the team.
Can anyone explain to me why Obua gets a game every week?
He is lazy, chicken hearted, one footed, and contributes absolutely nothing to the team.
Forget the pitiful penalty from Stewart mid week, he has been a disgrace for the majority of games he has played, yet is actually the captain of the team.
Why keep playing Driver wide right?
Why keep playing Suso wide left?
Why ever even strip the worst footballer ever seen in maroon... Witteveen?
Why sign Kucharskis, yet never play him?
Nade, I actually have some time for, I think he does have a degree of talent, but never as a lone striker, so why play him as one?
Why keep playing a system that does not work, and that every team knows you will play?
Why keep talking up the under 19's, yet never let them loose in the first team?
We are awful, and it stems from an inability from the top to change the methodology and personnel within the team.
Csaba... yer tea's oot.

And Vlad, while we are at it, sell the ground, make us homeless, kiss goodbye to 135 years of history, let Cala build flats, and give us back our football team.
Homeless Hearts built on an identity with a loyal Edinburgh support, is a far more appealing prospect than the utter rubbish being served up by Lithuanian Hearts.
I am certain a few of the Hibs fans will have a laugh and a few quick quips to post on here in reply, but I dont care... I am past caring now.. I am sick of everything that has happened to MY club, and of the posturing and flambouyant statements coming from both the manager and the owner.
I would actually only keep Driver, Wallace, Goncalves and Thomson from the current set up.... the rest are pitiful.

Sorry, pitiful is not descriptive enough, but I keep getting barred from using the descriptive terms I would like to employ.
All time worst Hearts team?
Here is a good attempt... see if there is a common denominator....
1. Balogh/Kello/Kurskis
2. Barrasa
3. Zaliukas
4. Kinchelskis
5. Mikoliunas
6. Pilibiatis
7. Beniusis
8. Obua
9. Ksnavacieus
10. Kingston (total imposter)
11. Beslija
Notice anything about that lot? Every one of them from the Romanov era, every one of them total mince, or posessing a totally mince attitude.

Is it so much to ask for a return to the days of Robertson, McKay, Colquhoun, Clark, Kidd, Jardine, Smith etc etc etc..... not world beaters, but guys who gave you everything, every game, and who you could excuse a bad performance every once in a while.....
They would wipe the floor with the current crop of "stars"....... McDonald and Jardine as managers.... Csaba will never know as much about the game as those guys forgot.

Despite Hibs winning this week and Hearts losing most weeks there is nothing cut and dried about the Derby next week. Nade has scored the winning goal against us before.

I don't believe he will do it again but anyone from either camp who thinks this is a foregone conclusion can only be about four years old.

There's a lot said about teams winning when they play badly and Hibs showed today that they can do that. The problem will be doing it regularly like the OF.

It has become a bit of a cause celebre for Hearts supporters that all the team needs is a striker. It needs a bit more than that. If Nade was missing sitters every week it may be a point but he's not because the team (midfield) are not creating many chances.

So here's hoping that we get back to the days (Not long ago)when the Edinburgh derby was the best in the calender as far as good football is cocerned.

And why are the InFirm threads closed down? Due to the punters religious, sectarian bile that offends the population.

Do you see any evidence of that above? No, what you see is local supporters ripping into each other, grabbing bragging rights. It's called banter. Winding each other up in a non-offensive way.

The Old Firm - Scotlands Shame.

42 Agree with that to an extent and i can understand the over reaction to hibs current form, as it's such a rarity. You're wrong about the chances we are creating, we are making them, it's sticking the ball away that is the achiles heel, as it was last season. Big difference is goals came from all over last season where as no one is scoring this time out.

Derbies are derbies and rarely confident on form alone. Not a quarter of the season done yet but you would have thought hibs had just won the league, not you to be fair but 95 % of your fellow fans, awell i guess if Hearts win next week these cretins will do a disapearing act as per the norm.

#Hammy, i applaud you, i just can't believe some of the hearts fans that still have their heads up their bahooky.
You seem to see what is happening and instead of hiding behind the usual garbage excuses and conspiracies.
You know pre-Vlad, most hearts fans i knew, including a few very good and old friends, were reasonable about the football, Since the "Vlad empire" every single hearts fan i knew bought in to what Vlad was promising.
This was where the "big team" insecurities started.
You all felt like you had to tell anyone who cared to listen that this was the case, a sure case of an inferiority complex, anyway...
If any one in the SPL were to be honest, then they would admit that once again, hibs were ahead of the rest, in sorting out their finances, they can now reap the rewards.
So to all who slated The mouser for being a "tight git" and laughed at Hibs for showing no ambition, it surely now has been proved beyond doubt that a healthy balancing of the books can work wonders off the pitch, AS WELL AS ON IT, as is starting to prove now with the Hibs, who incidentally happen to be sitting second top, as in equal 3rd bottom.
Didn't mean to go on a rant, but fair play to you mate for seeing through the it all, and more so, admitting it.

#56 Just back from the game, got the train today have a few shandies. Anyway, next week will be differnet. You lot are winning, but are very lucky, Ibrox last week you had a last minute goal against you incorrectly chopped off, today we hear of two sendings off and two goals in the last two minutes.

Come on that luck wouldn't be with through the season. You much flaunted forwards seem to be struggling to score week in week out.

Another defeat for Hearts today, and another rubbish display, well can't say it came as a surprise. Thankfully the form book goes out the window now as its derby week, and no doubt it will be a game of few chances hopefully big Nade can fluke one or something, I'll go for 1 nil to the JT's.

The hobos might be 11 ahead, but at one stage last season them and Utd were 12 ahead of us and how did that pan out ? Oh yeah we came third and you struggled to make the top six and had to relie on St Midden to stop Motherwell getting top six at your expense. Hobos pesh since 1875. We've had no luck so far this season, hopefully saving it for the derby. Bring it on, nothing like beating the hobos to kick start the season.

one or two sensible replies, one or two from the usual selection of hard of thinking... to those of a green and white persuasion with the ability to take my comments as realistic, thanks for the understanding, for those who cant, who cares, next week might prove the perfect chance to shut you up...
Seriously, i welcome a strong hibs, not at the expense of a strong Hearts... but collectively, put the evil firm in their place.
We are pants this year, you are not, end of, but, would it not be better if we both were good... imagine the wailing from the west if the OF were outside the top 2... and it's possible.
THAT is what really annoys me, and thousands of others, about the crud getting served up at Tynie.

Hello Hibbie. Pleased to see you have been missing me. Unfortunately, my business interests require my attention for at least a few hours every day, including Sundays, however I am here now.

I must confess that I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my predictions. While my prediction that Hibs would escape the drop is looking extremely accurate at this stage, conversely my prediction that Hearts would do the treble is not looking so promising.

Never mind, it is a glorious sunny day here today and a few chardonnays followed by a roast dinner beckons in a few short hours. I will contemplate the league cup semi over the chardonnays and thus gain a warm glow.

Finally, your presistence in mis-spelling my name displays a mean intelligence. If you want to raise my expectations of you, stop doing it.

Do Tescos produce their own bottles of Chardonnay then?

Hello Harry,

Expect you will be al tucked up in bed now but you might see this in the morning, as indeed may my good friend Hibbie.

We don't have Tescos here. I get my stuff delivered by the case from an outfit called the Fine Wine Company.

Pinot Gris is the in thing at the moment - at least I think it is. To be honest, I can't really tell the difference. As long as it's cool and tastes good, I am happy.

I will be very happy soon as the first couple start to hit the spot and prospects of yet another cup success come to mind.

Kiwi dug, pleasant comment from you this morning, your Chardonnay must have hit the spot easier than Hertz can hit the back of the net, and no I am not going to change your name, I like it as it is :-)

I think some Jambos on here have to calm doon.We are on a very bad run of results and not playing well. But sell the ground go back to the 1980s for a team?
Get real we all know things are going wrong at the momment but how long have been a football supporter?A supporter of any team who has been through a run of results like this.Time to calm down girls I think.
If you made your mind up to follow the Hearts or Hibs for that matter this is what its about, this is where being a follower is not the same as a supporter.
Hey If its too much for you go play golf or with yourself if you want but try keep it real.
Nobody likes it at a time like this and its really is a drag, but be a big boy take it on the chin Hibs are getting good results and the wee rub of the green just now so good for them and if you cant stand a bit of ribbing dont read it.
The Hibs experts have had us out the box 100s of times over the last few year, thats there fun,so what get over it because we are still here and that is down to one man. That man like it not is Vlad,If we could change things we would but we cant so get on with it and support your team and dont be such big cry babys.
JT for life.
