RANGERS manager Walter Smith expected nothing less than a nerve-jangling finale to the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League season, despite Celtic being written off as early as March.
Many fans thought the title was in the bag when Rangers won their fourth Old Firm derby on the trot.

Smith's men moved six points clear with one game in hand with that win but they go into tonight's Ibrox clash against third-placed Motherwell know
ing that defeat would take the destiny of the championship out of their hands.

While Celtic bounced back from that Ibrox loss, Rangers have dropped ten points in their last four SPL games, including two defeats at Parkhead.

But Smith is not feeling the heat after Celtic turned the tables to move seven points ahead.

Smith, in the first full season back at Ibrox, is pleased to be in with a chance of stopping Celtic winning their sixth title in eight years.

And the 60-year-old is well aware the two recent SPL triumphs which Rangers secured went to the final few minutes of the season. "Celtic have performed consistently well over the last couple of seasons, to their credit," Smith said.

"Nobody here would ever have expected that this season would have been any different. If you look back at the championships that Celtic have lost recently, they have all been late in the season. They have managed to win the last two fairly comfortably.

"This season, if you said to me with four or five games to go we would be challenging for the championship, I would accept that. I would have thought that would have been a good season for us."

While Celtic have just two games remaining, Rangers have five SPL games on top of both the UEFA and Scottish cup finals.

And Smith feels the European race could have an impact on the title race.

Motherwell come to Ibrox with a one-point lead over Dundee United and Hibernian, while Aberdeen have put themselves back in the frame.

The Gers could only draw at Hibs on Sunday and face United on Saturday in another vital encounter for both sides.

King of all that I survey!!!! Yep the last four league games have not been great for Rangers but in the matches against celtc, the refereeing was dreadful and but for that Rangers may have won them both. celtc seem to be getting many refereeing decisions going for thwm now - some appaling decisions in their favour in recent matches. Seems like the SPL and the referees want celtc to win it and will do anything to ensure that it happens.

When we Celtic minded watch the self destruct button being pushed daily at Ibrox, we cannot help by laugh if we are honest.

Celtic where in the same position back in 03, but we got on with it. Rangers should, if they have any sense lose in the league and go after the UEFA cup, we can fight each other next year for the league, but UEFA only comes along every once in a while.

If you want to win the UEFA cup, you must play that boring stuff you have been playing all season, otherwise Zenit will clean the floor with you.

Good luck, I hope the Bhoys take the league.

Rangers should go for all competitions, they do not need to sacrifice one for another. If they will all 4, fair play to them and if Celtic win the league well fair play to them also.

'But Smith is not feeling the heat'?

You can now buy dictation software that simply reproduces the spoken word as text. What makes Gavin McCafferty think he deserves his salary?

All we have heard in the last week is Rangers complaining about how they have been sooooooo hard done to. Smith and Murray have been bleating their hearts out and common sense has prevailed and the have been told to beat it..

This is the same Smith how stated 3 weeks ago that they didn't need an extension to the season.

The ibrox hordes know that even if they do win their last three games they still have to go to pittodrie and collect three points or they are also rans.

Tonight, Rangers just squeased it....how long can they go on.

Not so.

Three good wins and a draw at sheepland may do it. After all this isn't 1986 and Dundee Utd aren't St Mirren. Don't expect any 5 goal wins there.

Another thing. Rangers were far more worthy of tongihts win against Motherwell than your lot were last Saturday so how long can your lot expect the luck to give them a result.

#3 You certainly were not in the same position in 2003. You won nothing that year and did not have the fixture congestion that Rangers have. Had you been in the same position the Scottish Mhedia would have had a campaign for the SPL to help you out.Of that there is no doubt.

Reality check for the blinkered brother ! Talking about squeezing results how about St Mirren or Aberdeen or both OF games or Motherwell last week ..... you are right for once brother. How long can they go on ?
