Tragic footballer leaves £1.5m to widow
PHIL O'Donnell, the former Scotland footballer who collapsed and died while playing for Motherwell in December, has left £1.5 million in his will. The player left his entire estate to his widow Eileen, 35.
His will, published yesterday, revealed he had made plans in June 2006 for his estate to be left to his wife in the event of his death. But it also shows the 35-year-old and Mrs O'Donnell had made arrangements for a trust to be set up for their four children in the event of both of them passing away.
A half share of the family villa in his home town of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, was valued at £400,000.
He died towards the end of a match on 29 December. Fans created a shrine of scarves and football shirts at the club's Fir Park stadium. A post-mortem examination revealed he died from heart failure.
