FOUR days after his Ganassi Racing Nascar Sprint Cup team was closed when it hit sponsorship problems, Dario Franchitti's hopes of continuing in the Nationwide Series suffered a blow when his young stand-in qualified on pole at Daytona.
Bryan Clauson, aged just 19, powered Franchitti's No.40 Dodge to a maiden pole position for the Winn-Dixie 250 at Daytona although he could only finish the race in 19th spot as Denny Hamlin won in his Toyota.
"We feel like we can win with this car," said Clauson, who finished sixth on his Nationwide Series debut at Daytona in February.
"We took it back to the body shop and made some improvements.
"And hopefully we earned some friends and got some help getting to the front."
Franchitti (35), meanwhile, who has a three-year contract with Ganassi and who switched from IndyCar to Nascar this season, is expected to confirm his plans for the remainder of the 2008 season this week.
