A TRIP to Ayr is on the cards for Sandwith after the five-year-old landed a touch for former Glasgow-based bookmaker Matt Sawers in the Betfair Betting As It Should Be/Le Garcon D'Or Handicap at Musselburgh.
The 5-2 chance was always handy in the hands of PJ McDonald, who produced the favourite with a well-timed challenge to lead 100 yards from home and stretch two and a quarter lengths clear of Rothesay Dancer.
Sawers said of the Bob Johnson-trained
gelding: "I had a few quid on him (£5000 at 3-1) and he has done it well. I hope to run him in the Ayr Gold Cup and the plan is that Gunfighter will also run in it for me."
However, dreams of Gold for Sandwith may have to be put on hold this year due to his lowly rating and he will probably have to settle for a place in the consolation race, the Silver Cup.
Geoff Oldroyd completed a double with Infinity Bond in the IME Cost Effective Property Median Auction Maiden Stakes and Adozen Dreams, who dead-heated with Cutting Comments in the Ladbrokes Racecourse Team – Second To None Nursery. Adozen Dreams (9-1) also completed a double for Infinity Bond's rider Silvestre de Sousa and the Michael Dods-trained Cutting Comments (5-4 favourite) was doing likewise for Tom Eaves, who had earlier been successful on Nero West in the Gregor Shore Handicap.
De Sousa picked up a two-day suspension (July 21 and 22) for using his whip with excessive frequency and in the forearm position on Adozen Dreams. He was also cautioned for careless riding.
