BORDERS rugby clubs have agreed a new protocol over player transfers after increasing annoyance particularly around moves by Melrose to snap up the best young talent from across the region.
The recent Scottish Cup finalists have lost key Australian trio James Lew, Jordan Macey and Bill Wallace back to their homeland this summer, and David Whiteford, the back they signed from Peebles, is also heading down under in the hope of widening h
is rugby experience.

With only two Borders clubs remaining in the top flight since Hawick's relegation, Melrose coaches Craig Chalmers and John Dalziel have been tapping other clubs in a bid both to strengthen their squad for a tilt at the Division 1 championship next season.

Gala are set to lose Fraser Thomson, Tim Miskelly and Dean Keddie to their neighbours, while Michael Tait and Grant Shiells are heading west from Kelso and Rory Hutton, the Hawick stand-off, is now believed to be considering joining up at the Greenyards if a proposed trial with Glasgow Warriors fails to land him a full-time contract.

Players moving between clubs is hardly new, as coaches seek to improve their squads for the new season, but it appears that Melrose coaches' lack of communication with clubs was at the heart of this week's turmoil.

Some coaches and officials have become angry at discovering players were leaving in the media, before having an opportunity to speak to them about the move. There was even talk among some clubs of withdrawing from Melrose Sevens in the belief that the Greenyards club were using their takings from the event to tempt players with payments.

However, after a positive Border League meeting, Mike Dalgetty, the Melrose director of rugby, insisted: "The idea of a protocol where clubs speak to each other first about players was agreed as a sensible way forward. The issue was not just concerning Melrose, but all clubs, and the meeting was very productive.

"I will look anyone in the eye and say quite clearly that there has been no money offered to or received by these young lads for coming to play for Melrose next season. Talented players will always move for one reason or another; they want to play for a Borders club in Division 1.

"Yes, we do help some players financially, particularly those who come from abroad because you're asking them to leave jobs behind when they come here. We do not earn the vast sums people seem to think from the sevens; it costs quite a bit to run to be honest. It does play a significant role in keeping this club, in a small Borders town, going, but most of our income, like most clubs I expect, goes into the development of the club.

"It helps with youth development – £30,000 goes on that alone – support costs, admin, petrol costs for players to come back from university; things like that. But we do not pay all our 1st XV players – our club could not support that approach."

£30K on Youth Development !
You must be paying the Coaches top $
Why the need to tap so many neighboring players if your youth system is so good ?
That said, I am all in favour of the cream rising to the top. Other Clubs will just have to take their respective places in the food cain

Lazy journalism again from Scotsman - reading this you would think it was only Melrose at it.

At the reported meeting it came to light that Selkirk have poached two players from Jed, Gala are trying to get the Peebles half backs and Hawick are raiding Langholm again - but as usual it is all about Melrose where at least they are open about their intentions. What wasn't reported was also that a number of other Gala and Hawick players not named in the article, approached Melrose directly but were turned away!

If you look at who is going to Melrose it is young ambitious players, many part of the national academy set up, where they have been specifically told to try and play Prem 1 rugby to further their careers - the sad fact is that with only Melrose & Selkirk challenging at the top club level players will want to join them.

It is a vicious circle when Border teams need to try and retain talent to get back to Prem 1 their best player leave to play at a higher level - but it can be done and Selkirk are a great example of this.

It is a result of the open system we have and is really just rugby 'market forces' - time for the whingeing clubs to knuckle down, be innovative and stop blaming their troubles on Melrose and others.

This article has really rilled me. For large parts of last season when ever Melrose were reported on it was talk of how well the aussie imports had played in winning the game. Melrose as a club have been very lucky with the overseas players they have brought in but they are not doing anything that other clubs hadn't been doing. So now when Melrose replace foreign players with homegrown players again they receive negative press. I know personnally that only one player coming to the greenyards was approached, and he was asked to play in the second team anyway and through him others ASKED to come after a huge un rest was discovered at gala(not having a go at gala here). And every other player barring academy players has ASKED to come. Melrose can draw on only a very small pool of players, they have 2 senior teams and a 3xv/vets team and one under 18 compare that with Hawick and Gala's senior teams YM's etc. Would we rather these young borders players moved to Heriots/Watsonians or Melrose/Selkirk?? I could continue my rant!So to Mr Ferguson your piece is a joke and comes across very poorly.

Mr Ferguson, i have always thought you were a great reporter, but after reading this article i have been proven wrong!

As big bad broon says, all the players have approached melrose and not the other way round. you should get your facts correct before printing a story.

Can you blame young players for waning a crack at prem 1 rugby? no disrespect to gala or kelso but at the moment they are not competitive enough to be in prem 1, so think the boys have made the right move.

Also going back to bigbadbroon, i have been told that gala and kelso have approached melrose's second choice scrum half? It's going on at every club but as usual when melrose are involved it's all bad!!

This article is a total disgrace, pure jelousy I think Mr Ferguson has his Gala hat on. This is nothing more than an other jelous pop at Melrose because the success they have worked hard to achieve over the years.Surely Melrose cant be critisised because they have created a proffesional invironment where ambitious players want to come and be part off. All Border Clubs chase each others players and always have done. Melrose are a club who put players first not politics. Maybe certain Club's need to look closer to home and ask why there players want to leave and join other clubs especially when there is no money changing hands.

Just a thought........,

Whether this story is true or false......if I was a young player in the Borders and wanted to leave my current team for something bigger and/or better, I wouldn't be knocking on any other Border team door or even any of the Cityslicker sides for a game.......I'd be aiming a bit higher.....try knocking on the door in France or one of the other home nations...........take note Rory Hutton..........if you settle for second best.........you'll get second best......
