HERIOT'S lost the battle but won the war. They needed just one point from this closing match of the season to squeeze ahead of Boroughmuir in the Premier One table and book their place in the inaugural British and Irish Cup next year, and they managed that on two counts – by scoring four tries and finishing within seven points of their conquerors.
There was some satisfaction for Accies too, in that they managed to cobble together a team this week capable of claiming the scalp of their near neighbours and bitter rivals.

Alongside league champions Ayr, the Goldenacre men will take a step into
the unknown next year. But head coach Bob McKillop is in no doubt about the value of this innovation.

"If Munster put out their A team, they ran the All Blacks close so we know what to expect there – but it is a fantastic opportunity and the guys are really stoked about it," he said.

Given the significance of this match, switched to Lasswade because of the hardness of the Raeburn Place pitch, McKillop had opted to go with ten of the players who started Sunday's SHE Cup final against Melrose, as well as Jamie Parker who played most of that game, and for the first 35 minutes it looked as if he might have asked too much of his squad.

They took a beating up-front as Accies raced into a 17-0 lead with tries from Mike Campbell, Stuart Walker and Ed Stuart.

It was the 35th minute before Heriot's managed to get any meaningful possession and when they did they were quick to show the killer instinct which served them so well against Melrose on Sunday, with Richard Mill dancing inside his man and touching down between the posts.

That seemed to give Heriot's the shot of adrenalin they had been waiting for. Graham Wilson added the conversion then kicked a penalty before Jamie Parker rumbled over from close range to reduce the gap to two points at the break.

McCall showed his pace to put Heriot's ahead at the beginning of the second half, and with half an hour to go Wullie Blacklock grabbed Heriot's fourth try to secure the bonus point which ensured they would be playing cross-border rugby next season. No matter what happened from now on, it was a case of mission accomplished for the Goldenacre men – which is just as well, as far as they are concerned.

Accies battled on, with youngster Euan Bonner kicking a penalty. Then Tom Drennan came inside Tom Brown to square it before Bonner kicked two penalties to secure the win for his side.

Scorers: Edinburgh Accies: Tries: M Campbell, Walker, Stuart, Drennan; Cons: M Campbell, Bonner; Pen: Bonner 3. Heriot's: Tries: Mill, Parker, McCall, Blacklock; Con: Wilson 2; Pen: Wilson.

Great advert for all action rugby . Thr ref did his best to spoil the game and Accies can feel hard done to as many felt their sending offs were a bit much and had a big effect on the final result . Accies found themselves playing for 1/4 of the game short handed and Heriots would have been well out of the game if the cards had not been shown and second spot in the league would have been a distant dream , but their good fortune has followed them from Saturday and they got the result they required . I hope they put up a good show in the cross Border competition but I feel that the full time English Nat 1 teams will be far too strong , especially up front . I know Melrose beat Rotherham two years ago but what must be remembered was that the Rotherham coach , Andre Bester , had left at the end of the previous season and was followed by the core of the team who moved on to Guiness Premiership or full time Nat 1 teams . The new coach came in to a decimated squad and resultantly the team just escaped relegation . Melrose played them at the Greenyards this season and were blown away by their overall power and this Rotherham team were candidates for relegation again and only got out of trouble at the end of the season with 4 wins out of 5 games .
I hope we dont see a poaching situation where the two teams qualified for this competition now trawl Premier 1 for the top talent as this will kill the league and result in a situation similar to football where Rangers and Celtic dominate .

Interesting Observation,

Make no mistake, Heriots will trawl the country trying to poach talent from any and every club, as is their norm, only this time it will be even greater and no doubt the promises even bigger. No wonder the world hates them.

No doubt the SRU will help their favourite club by moving Rory Hutton to Heriots giving them even more academy players! Would it not be better if the moved Rory to either Selkirk or Melrose and keep im in the Borders.
Its also likely the Heriot will raid Hawick as they usually do every summer.

i am struggling to agree with ur comment here. i find it hard to believe that only heriots would be interested in bringing in better players to their club, and i am positive the attraction of money that the likes of ayr, watsonians etc have will be a decisive factor in what players choose to do thi ssummer. heriots' attraction is that they are current scottish cup holders and will be playing in the british and irish cup next season. i think players anyway will be wanting a shot at that and if they are looknig to move, may see heriots as a plausible option, seens as they play attractive and exciting rugby anyway, rather than heriots trying to poach players....thoughts?
