HAWICK have launched an initiative twinning the rugby club with four other clubs around the world.
Ballymena in Northern Ireland, Poneke in Wellington, New Zealand and Australian clubs Norths in Brisbane and Wests in Canberra will be twinned with Hawick, although the Borders club has stated they are looking for other similar agreements in an effort to improve the potential of sharing players, coaches and fund-raising ideas.

Hawick RFC president Terence Froud explained: "It is commonplace for towns and cities to be twinned, so why not rugby clubs? More importantly, it will help protect the ethos of the game.

"A lot of our players are keen to experience playing rugby in different countries. The twinning idea will help formalise these trips and give the players confidence that there are strong links at the twinned clubs."

But didn't Jim Hay say during the season that it should be people from Hawick who represented and played for the club?

Don't worry Jim Hay will soon change his tune. He always puts his mouth where the money is.....

Hawick is one of those clubs with something worth while to export, I would expect the balance will be about even. Many Hawick lads playing for other Scottish Clubs with HRFC received nothing in return.
This is a good initiative and well done to Hawick.

Great initiative from Hawick. Over the years, many young Scots have taken a gap year to spend a season or two in Oz or NZ and have come back all the better for it both as players and individuals. Equally, two or three southern hemisphere players in a squad can bring a new seriousness to training, and an edge to playing the game. Formalising the arrangement is all to the good - not least from the parent's point of view. I'm sure that Hawick have set an example that others will want to follow.

#3 & 4 - couldn't agree more. Once again a bit of forward thinking from a Borders club. Only time will tell what might be gained or lost but at least they are thinking outside of the box.

think this is a great idea, especially for young players with talent who are trying to get a game in prem 1 but struggle, due to the fact most of the prem 1 teams have several experienced ex pro players I think our young talented guys would rather play abroad or be allowed to go to another team for a spell in order to improve themselves, its got to be better than sitting on a bench or playing 2s.

I hear they are also considering twinning with Baghdad, Helmund Provence, The Gaza Strip and Beirut. Joking apart, good initiative, well done.
