QUEEN of the South's first European adventure ended in brave defeat last night as they failed to reach the Uefa Cup first round.
The Irn-Bru First Division club were unable to overturn their second qualifying round first leg defeat to Nordsjaelland but were more than a match for their Danish top-flight opponents.

Bob Harris' early stunner gave Queens hope of an upset, but the home side took advantage of their need for a second goal with two late Martin Bernburg strikes.

Gordon Chisholm made three changes from the Queens side beaten 2-1 in the first leg, on-loan Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell replacing Bryn Halliwell. Jamie Adams and Harris came in for Jamie McQuilken and the injured Gary Arbuckle in a 4-5-1 formation.

Harris immediately justified his inclusion with a stunning second-minute goal. A Queens free kick 30 yards out was touched to the defender, who unleashed an unstoppable swerving drive into the net.

Queens were denied a good opportunity to go ahead in the tie in the 18th minute when Benjamin Kibebe gave the ball away deep in his own half. The panicking defender responded by felling Sean O'Connor on the edge of the box, rightly earning a booking. Stevie Tosh hit the wall with the resulting free kick.

Ten minutes before the break, the visitors went close to doubling their lead when Paul Burns burst forward and released Stewart Kean, who was put off by a challenge and blazed over.

Nordsjaelland began to get on top in the second half and Chisholm responded by withdrawing Adams for Stephen Dobbie shortly after the hour mark, before Richter sent a 25-yard rocket narrowly wide.

Queens went straight down the other end and O'Connor and Dobbie exchanged passes before the former's left-foot finish hit the legs of Jesper Hansen. But the goalkeeper nearly gifted Queens the goal they needed with 14 minutes left when he punched the ball straight to Burns, who shot too close to Hansen.

The visitors were becoming increasingly desperate and were caught upfield as Henrik Kildentoft broke away and crossed for Bernburg to sidefoot the hosts level. All hope for Queens was extinguished in the final minute when a long ball found Bernburg, who held off his marker and finished.

Nordsjaelland: Hansen, Kibebe, Kildentoft, Lundberg, Simon Richter, Bernier, Jonathan Richter, Christensen (Neilsen 89), Petersen (Fetai 69), Karlsen (Dahl 46), Bernburg. Subs Not Used: Pode, Storm, Pedersen, Theis Rasmussen. Booked: Kibebe, Petersen, Christensen.

Queen of the South: Bell, Reid, Harris, Thomson, Barr, MacFarlane (Robertson 80), Tosh, Adams (Dobbie 64), Burns, O'Connor, Kean (McQuilken 70). Subs Not Used: Halliwell, Aitken, McGowan, McLaughlan. Booked: Adams.

Referee: Tony Chapron (France).

Attendance: 3,452

Hard lines Doonhamers. A brave effort and they were unlucky to lose both legs.

Here is the link to the BBC Sport Predictor:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotland/predictor/

I have set-up a minileague for all posters on here willing to join.

It’s just a bit of fun and it starts with this weekend’s SPL fixtures.

All you need to do is go to the link and create your own membership. Try and make your user id as close to the one you use on here, so we all know who you are.

NB. If you are already registered and have points on the board, please re-register with a slightly different user id for this minileague, so that everyone starts on ZERO points. Anyone joining with points already accrued will be removed.

Once you’re in, select “My Minileagues” and enter . . .

The Scotsman Forum

. . . as the minileague name.

The password is . . .

thescotsman

Once you have joined the minileague, you can start making your predictions. You get 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score. After each set of fixtures you can check the minileague table to see where you are and who is on top etc.

Enjoy it. It’s just a bit of fun.

The SFA should not be sending diddy teams into Europe.

#22 - You're doing a great job as ambassador for "your" club, h*ndit.

No wonder Rangers "fans" are held in widespread contempt...

Harlem Tam,

thepundit - why are you so negative and abusive to other clubs? Let's face it - without the other 10 clubs, Celtic and Rangers would be left to play each other every week.

Then we'd get bored beating you every week :)

All football fans should be speaking out against Gordon Brown's plans for a team GB at next Olympic games as this will risk ending Scottish clubs' participation in European competitions.

No one invited Queens or "sent" them into Europe. They qualified fair and square according to the current rules. They deserved their day.
Having said that, I think it is time the "runners-up" spot in the cup final was pulled as means of qualifying. Since the Cup-Winners' Cup was jerked, it seems logical that in the event of the national cup winners qualifying for a "bigger" event, the next representative should be based on finishing position in the top division.

BTW why are we talking about team selections for the OF game on Sunday on this thread?

Hard lines Queens, they played as well as could be expected.
While agree Scottish Cup runners up should not play in Europe, it was good to see supporters that flew the Saltire and knew which country their team was representing.

#30 Bluenose....... you have a short memory. Remember Manchester? Now thats what one calls embarrasment. The Scottish people were once again put to shame by low life sectarian thugs wearing Glasgow Rangers colours.

Queen of the South we are all proud of you,you played with passion and went out of the competition with dignity. Well done.

As for Scotland's shame? well I dont really think that there will be many changes in that department,as the plankton Rangers support are beyond help.

Go and just die mate... Getting on at Queen's for punching above their weight and only narrowly losing out to rangers in the Scottish Cup and then playing some good 'ATTACKING' football (Remember that?) with a decent travelling support in a European away leg.

That is ten times better than a ramshackle team of pensioners captained by a ned and managed by a dinosaur playing 10-0-0 to bore their way to a final where they were roundly horsed and then proceded to drag our country's good name into the mire by going on a rampage infront of the British press... Followed by being torn apart by Kaunas and put to the sword by a guy who was so poor he couldn't get a game in a struggling eigth place Hearts team and earned himself the name 'Pilly-biter'.

Rangers: Scotland's Shame!

Well done Queens and better luck next time... At least you actually attacked the oposition and scored a few goals.

Strange eh? The fans of every other club come on here and offer commiserations to QOS on a plucky performance and then there's Rangers fans.

Scotland's Shame: RFC

2 Scottish teams pumped out of Europe at the first hurdle by diddy teams. Fair play to Queens, they gave a decent account of themselves. The Danish team probably thought that they were also playing a diddy team before the draw was made.

As everyone else is talking about Sunday now, can any Rangers fans tell me they have been totally convinced by Bougherra? He has a lot of pace but looked very casual every time he was on the ball on Saturday.

If the handball reference was with regards to McManus' goal at the weekend, it came off the top of his arm if anything, now i have joked in the past about Rangers fans and interbreeding, so i guess its safe to assume thats where your hands are being a Rangers fan....

If its about Caldwell the week before, fair enough!

Bleeding Heart...,

#38 h*ndit - like it or not, you represent Rangers on these pages. In fact, you promote the idea yourself, don't you?

And boy, what an advert you are for them.

You're a bit of a caricature, h*ndit. The arrogant, dismissive, boorish, Rangers fan. Did you have to take lessons - or did it all come naturally to you once you started attending matches at Greyskull?

As "Jamboy" says "The fans of every other club come on here and offer commiserations to QOS on a plucky performance - and then there's Rangers fans."

At least you're not alone. Your pal "Bluenose" seems to be even more cretinous than you...
