COWDENBEATH grabbed a vital win in their fight to avoid the Second Division relegation play-offs, coming out on top in an entertaining encounter in monsoon conditions against a Queen's Park side that now have a lead of five points on their visitors.
The rain fell throughout the first half, but the visitors settled well and took the lead in 32 minutes. Scott Gates got the better of home goalkeeper Zander Cowie in the race for a long through pass, with the on-loan Dundee youngster slotting hom
e the loose ball from six yards out.
Three minutes later Cowdenbeath doubled their lead when Dougie Hill rose unchallenged to nod a free kick across goal and Paul McQuade turned the ball over the line from less than a yard out. The Spiders got back into the game nine minutes after the break through Mark Ferry.
But the visitors went two ahead again in 78 minutes when Gates broke up the sodden Hampden turf before releasing sub Denis McLaughlin who finished in fine style. Sub Tony Quinn set up a tight finish when he grabbed a second for the home side, but Cowdenbeath held on.
