MIXU PAATELAINEN looks set to shuffle his pack again tonight when Hibs take on Raith Rovers at Stark's Park.
The Easter Road manager made three changes to his starting line-up in Sweden at the weekend, bringing Andy McNeil, Alan O'Brien and Ross Chisholm into the fold in place of Yves Ma-Kalambay, Brian Kerr and John Rankin.

And tonight's friendly in Fife will allow Paatelainen the chance to give some of his fringe players a run-out, with those not involved in the InterToto double header, including Clayton Donaldson and Thierry Gathuessi, who were left at home as the rest of their team-mates flew out to Gothenburg, all in line to make appearances.

Rovers boss John McGlynn admits he expects his side to be chasing the game for much of the 90 minutes as they come up against an SPL side.

But he insisted that bringing his players up to match fitness was the main aim of the game and said: "SPL teams are used to playing at a higher tempo and we'll probably be doing a lot of chasing," he said.

"The players might not be able to match them for 90 minutes but if they can take that kind of tempo into a game against a Second Division side, the other team will find it hard to handle us.

"It's all about getting the players match-fit and these types of games will help us do that."

Meanwhile, Donaldson has admitted his disappointment at being told he is not going to be part of Paatelainen's plans for the coming season.

The striker signed for the Easter Road side from York City at the start of last season when John Collins was manager but has since failed to establish himself in the starting line-up.

However, the frontman insists that, while there is still a chance that he could remain in Edinburgh, he will continue to fight for his place in the side until a move comes to fruition.

He said: "I had an indication that they were going to listen to offers, basically because I haven't really been playing.

"With the manager changing, it hasn't helped at all.

"It's absolutely killed it for me, really.

"There has been interest from other teams, it's up to the club if they accept an offer.

"As far as I am concerned, I'm still a Hibs player and I'm still going to fight for my place as long as I am here."

If Paatelainen has said "Donaldson is not in my future plans" i cannot see the point in playing him tonight against Raith.

Am i missing something here? Given the performance towards the end of last season, the Inter-Toto results etc, I for one am concerned about Mixu's thought process.

Firstly its the 'journalist's' opinion of who will be in the team. Secondly, while Hibs have indicated they will listen to offers for Donaldson, until he actually goes he is a member of the squad and is receiving wages. So why not play him and see how he is performing?

That Donaldson should be in the shop window. Jenners, with a price tag of around £25.00 on his head. He can take that O Brien with him as a BOGOF. The pair of them are pretty dire. We need some decent new signings.

#4 I'd rather see Gatheussi as part of the BOGOF than O'Brien. He hasn't showed what he can do since last pre-season but he's another that hasn't really had a chance. Gatheussi on the other hand cost us points last season.

I had to laugh at Donaldson being miffed at Mixu, stating that because of him, his career's down the pan, especially as I'm a YCFC exile up here.

He did well at York, but, in context, we're non-league and there were other guys doing the same thing for their own teams at the same time as want-away Donaldson.

In moving to Hibs, he was given the opportunity to shine but he's only speeded up his next career move into car sales.

#9 Sorry Dubs but most of that is utter tosh. The Riordan thing just isn't going to go away until the wee squirt actually leaves Celtic and I get the feeling Strachan is going to just let him sit and stew as revenge for Deek's outbusrt in the papers earlier in the year. Maka/McNeil, so which one. I'd rather keep McNeil myself, I have no faith in Maka. Michael Stewart? nah. He'll cost money as he could have left for nothing if Hearts hadn't taken up the option on the final two years of his contract. Since he is still there we have to assume they did. Danny Livesly ? who he?
17

Glorious Hearts,

15/07/2008 13:43:39
I don't usually post on Hibs stories, but this is just to confirm that Hearts had the option of releasing Stewart at the end of May.
When they didn't release him that automatically triggered the extra 2 years of his contract.
If anyone wants Mikey Stewart they'll need to pay a fee as he's a contracted player and being honest, I can't see Romanov negotiating the sale of one of our players to Hibs.
18

Iain Bhern,

15/07/2008 13:49:08
#17 Interesting that they gave him a year with a two year option. Seems like they weren't sure he would come good. Watch around January time though especially if Hearts are in the mix with crucial high stakes games. If Stewart is out through stomach trouble then a wee hunch I've had for a while may be on the money. I'll keep the hunch to myself meantime though and reveal all if he's out with aforementioned stomach bother.
19

stanton4,

15/07/2008 13:56:45
so we are not getting anyone then.

Does mixu not know any big huge Scandanavians. It doesnt matter if the are pi$h bound to be better than the small p1$h ones we have now

#22 it was in one of the articles yesterday that the option for the final two years had kicked in, much as #17 said. Personally I can't see Stewart moving straight back to Hibs (he is a self confessed Jambo after all) and I can't see Petrie shelling out money on a player alleged to have been a troublemaker when we had him. I wouldn't say no if we got consistent performances from him but his temper worries me. He loses the place too easily resulting in silly bookings and red cards.

Nah he's a goallie and at only 36 still got a season or four in him yet. I'd rather have him, an experienced pro, between the sticks than the relatively young laddies we have now.

JJ - Will be announced by the end of the week

Niemi will not be at hibs, he is staying in the premiership

Hearts have been linked with Bobo Balde, with Berra going the opther way.

Hearts also asked about Chris Killen

Hibs will sign another midfielder - not yet confirmed, although it is not Grant Brebner or Mikey Stewart as rumoured

Keenan has signed 3 year deal

Hibs have tried and failed again to sign riordan (not down to personal demands)

For the record, how many times was i correct last year

You heard nish first, you heard broonie first, murray back first and killen back first

Interesting stuff, but I am am sure that your crystal ball is only about 15% accurate. In football we never rule out anything but here are some observations:

1. Johanesson - that's possible but not till end of Swedish season late September.

2. Niemi - agreed, unlikely at Hibs due to his high expectations.

3. There would be no sense to Hearts acquiring 33 year old Balde on 26k a week at Celtic.

4. Killen sh*t on Hibs already for 5k per week. Little chance of him coming back and then being injured for 25 games a season.

5. Grant Brebner a possible. It was Mowbray who got rid of him as he said he was too dominant in the dressing room.

6. Keenan?? He does not seem to come hightly recommended by the guys who have watched him in Australia. Probably 2nd or 3rd rate.

7. Riordan?? As an earlier poster wrote - this will not go away till he leaves Celtic. But who would sign him in the Championship or EPL when he has not played for 2 years? Only those who know his capabilities. Coyle at Burnley, Mowbray at WBA?

not so neautral observer that is your opinion

JJ is signed - that is that will be unveiled this week

Well done on niemi

Balde - Hearts have enquired about him and Killen, i never said he was going nor did i say Killen was going to HIBS

Keenan - Has signed a 3 year deal, not interested in whether you think he is good or not i am merely reporting what I KNOW. Unless of course you know different, if you kknow anything on this to the contrary let me know.

Brebner - will NOT i repeat NOT be back at hibs.

Riordan - I said hibs had tried to sign him, unsuccessfuly, Gordon Strachan will not let him go to another premier league club - that includes Aberdeen.

Leaving - Donaldson will go to Carlisle - FACT
Benji - will go to Anderlecht
On hibs net Mccann is going to dunfermline on loan??

Fletcher???

Thanks for your further information. Will remember who broke the news when these signings come to pass. Willie Groves, so good they named 2 streets after him!

I read what you wrote about Killen again in post 27 and I had obviously interpreted that wrongly i.e.

'Hearts also asked about Chris Killen'

Riordan still has one year left on his contract I believe so, if he is of a mind, he will sit that out and Celtic will get no transfer fee. He might just do that.

Grant Brebner had been injured for all of the last A League season, and he is still injured, he also has one year left to run on his present contract with Melbourne Victory, so he's not going anywhere.

Hibs need some good decent signings urgently, as presently they are very very bad..
49

jamtart,

Beechboro Western Australia 16/07/2008 03:24:44
Have watched Grant Brebner over here and he aint exactly setting the place on fire.
The Australian A league is one of the worst leagues in the world and if he can't mix it here the Hibs don't want him.

I'm a Jambo but trust me on this one.
50

Warrnambool Hibee,

16/07/2008 04:32:21
Brebnar may not be setting the A-League on fire, however (when fit) he would be one of the first names on the Melbourne Victory team sheet. Unlike his team-mate Keenan, who struggled to get a game.

There were other issues to Keenans lack of performance irrelevant of his ability, so hopefully he will be more comfortable at Hibs and show the potential that got him signed by Chelsea.

Word here is that Keenan has signed a 2 year deal, Newcastle Jets have stated this as they were also chasing him.

IMO If Hibs had a chance to get Brebnar back (and he was not gambling) then they would be mad not to.
51

ozdon,

16/07/2008 05:01:44
#50 I agree with your sentiments mate, Brebner helped Victory win the league and everything else a couple of seasons ago, when he was playing well, last season he played injured the whole year, when the league was over he didn't play at all, and it looks like he is still injured so may not play a lot this year.

Brebnar if everyone remembers was captain under Tony Mowbrey until he got sent off, and gambling kicked in, Keenan had a great pre season last year, given the huge number of superstars Hibs have signed so far i really can't see Keenan being a bad thing at Hibs, at least it's a new face
52

Warrnambool Hibee,

16/07/2008 05:11:11
Just glad there is finally some evidence of someone being signed that is not from another SPL club. Gives us something to be excited about.

Hibbees Mad reported that he played against Raith yesterday and was BOG. Promising signs.

They also reported that a trialist keeper played which fumbled a corner ball and shanked a kick out of the park.... not so promising signs!
53

ozdon,

16/07/2008 05:21:46
Yves Ma'Kalamby looked fine in the games i watched on Setanta last season, so did McNeil mind you. I don't think goalkeepers are what we need, we need some defence and midfielders, most importantly a left back to begin with.

Keenan is not a bad pick up, not sure if he will set the heather on fire, but no worse than others already there
54

Warrnambool Hibee,

16/07/2008 06:28:14
I must admit, I have been a little critical of all the ribbing that Maka and McNeil have copped. I obviously have not been at matches to see them first hand but what I've seen on highlights etc. the majority of goals let through were the fault of defenders or midfielders not the keeper.

It was reported that Mixu was not happy with McNeil in Sweden, however also reported that one goal was a deflection and the other a cracker.

The goal keepers get blamed yet throughout both games strikers and midfielders missed some really good chances. I think we have really struggled up front since O'Conner and Riordan left. Too many good opportunities go wasted. Fletch is good but needs much better support.
55

ozdon,

16/07/2008 06:47:37
I thought Maka was ok, all the reports were coming through, sure he made mistakes but no worse than anyone else..........

Fletcher is an interesting one, he scored fourteen goals until christmas time last year, then struggled to score any, don't know why we ever let Killen go, and now i read that Hearts are looking at him!!!!
56

Warrnambool Hibee,

16/07/2008 07:33:58
I'm still a huge fan of Benji's when he has his head screwed on. Unfortunately I don't think Hibs will keep him and even if they do he does not seem interested. When him and Zemmama were both flying they were awesome to watch and complimented Fletcher well.

I don't think Fletcher is mature enough to play as a lone striker and I think after 14 goals teams realised that if they stopped him then we did not have much else in the way of quality scorers.
