WALTER Smith has been criticised by Bolton signing Danny Shittu for not returning phone calls during the former Watford defender's botched Rangers move.
Shittu almost joined the Ibrox club in a deal worth £1.5million last month but the centre-back's move collapsed following talks over personal terms in Glasgow. The player said Rangers' formal salary offer was substantially lower than the level first discussed.

Yesterday Shittu clinched a £2m switch to Bolton Wanderers and a source close to the 27-year-old said: "Danny left messages with Walter Smith himself to explain there must have been a misunderstanding when he went up to Rangers.

"But Walter didn't call him back at all. Danny was unhappy and very, very disappointed about that.

"It was the most upsetting thing for him, as he wanted to put the record straight."

Shittu is understood to have asked for £25,000-a-week wages, with Rangers offering £20,000. The source added: "Danny was so looking forward to Rangers – but what they did wasn't fair. He wasn't being greedy."
