Smith: Cuellar sale has lifted Rangers' play

RANGERS manager Walter Smith admits the cloud that hung over Ibrox following the sale of Carlos Cuellar has had a silver lining in his team's improved football.
The £7.8 million received from Aston Villa when the Spaniard invoked a sell-on clause has helped fund the purchase of midfielders Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis.

And the performances of new centre-back Madjid Bougherra have dissipated the anger fel
t by many Gers fans when Cuellar left one year after joining from Osasuna.

Bougherra has been solid at the back while the new-look midfield has a panache sometimes missing during Rangers' successful but functional displays last term.

Rangers now go into tomorrow's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash at St Mirren aiming for their sixth victory on the trot.

"We have a situation there where, not through our own choosing, Carlos leaving gave us a level of money to improve the team in one or two areas," he said.

"That's helped us, but it was not through choice. We have shown improvement in our overall football aspect, we just have to make sure that when we go to places like Love Street we can still produce that.

"The new boys have come in and – Davis aside because he had already played with us and has played extremely well since he came back – Mendes and Bougherra have started really well."

Come on Tim. I would expect a little more after such a long Sabbatical (although having been largely absent myself, maybe you've been back for a while and I just haven't noticed).

Rangers ARE a better team than last year, however. and given that we won two cups, reached a European Final, and took the League to the last day, that's really saying something.

Bougherra has filled in admirably for Cuellar, Broadfoot and Papac have grown more comfortable in their un-natural full-back roles, Davis looks better now that he's a bona-fide Rangers player, Mendes has added real quality to the central midfield, and Miller is really starting to look like an asset up front. With Barry due back soon, there will be real competition for places.

Our start to the SPL season has been excellent (who could have expected us to win with such ease at Celtic Park and Easter Road), and with no midweek distractions, I can see a domestic season par excellence on the horizon.

C'mon the 'Gers.

Tim

Good to have your unique input once again. I've only been posting about once a week myself over the last month or so. Can't say that I've noticed any imitators. There can only be one Tim Malloy, which is much more than enough, IMO.

A little harsh on Hutton, who had half a season then a bad injury, and Cuellar, who's only played a few games. They'll both do well in the Premiership, I reckon.

I'm pleased that Walter looks like utilising 4-4-2 as his standard formation this season. At least it looks like we're actually trying to win games this season, and I'm greatly encouraged by the start we've made in the SPL.

On a personal note, I've actually invested in Setanta for this season, and I've already watched our victories at CP and ER. Two excellent performances by my reckoning. I know that Celtic ain't gonna roll over though, so I look forward to another epic battle for the title.

May the better team prevail.

Have to agre with BE regarding Hutton. He has a pretty good rep down here and one of my bosses is Spurs mad and thinks highly of him.

As for Cuellar time will tell.

Agreed about the fee but nowadays everyyone is a multimillion pound player. I still think he will come good with more experience. He did after all look pretty good in our European matches against some top sides.
Cuellar played at a decent level in what I always consider the best league in Europe. Watching it now in fact. Barca are awesome. 5 - 1 up on Athletico and not even half time.
