Smith: Kaunas clash is bigger than UEFA final

WALTER SMITH insists next week's Champions League qualifier against FBK Kaunas is a bigger game for Rangers than last season's UEFA Cup final.
The showpiece against Zenit St Petersburg in May provided a first European final in 36 years, albeit the Ibrox club left Manchester empty-handed.

But because of the financial implications of the Champions League Smith insists taking a step closer
to the lucrative group stages of Europe's top club competition is even more crucial.

"This match against Kaunas is more important to us than last season's UEFA Cup final," said the Rangers boss.

"It's a major anxiety. You find yourself now in a situation where you've got awkward games and they come at the wrong time of year. You don't even get the benefit of three or four competitive games.

"But if you have aspirations these are the things you've got to overcome. The financial aspects are an enormous part of it. You have to be prepared if things don't go well for you.

"The Old Firm should be up there with the leading clubs but, unfortunately, because of the financial aspects of football and the difference between 12 and 15 years ago, it is now predominantly a financially-based game.

"Nobody can run away from that aspect of it. I'm listening to managers in England spending a fortune in transfers and wages saying 'We're not going to break into the top four'.

"And that's at that level of spending. It's a financially based game but supporters probably will not accept that. What we've got to watch is that we don't accept it either. There are other aspects of football we hope can make up for that."

Both Rangers and Celtic have progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League in recent years but have so far failed to breach the last eight.

Smith admits the current financial climate means the Old Firm will continue to struggle against the continents' big hitters but says Rangers will continue to strive for success on the European stage.

He added: "If you look at the Champions League, a country of five million people – or even double that – is not going to win the Champions League.

We still want to be in there competing at that level, though. But there's got to be a level of realism that the Champions League might be beyond us."

Should be easy for the Hearts feeder club to progress into the knockout stages. Gers are old and decrepit and the manager has had his one good season last time out, back to normal for the gers and trophyless 08/09

ur no a hh or a jambo, ur a tim or a hibee, what a rubbish headline, more rubbish from Mr Smith, this should be an easy game for Rangers, his patter is turning it into something it isnt, the next round is the hard one, lets be honest Kaunas are rotten, our u19's should be able to beat them, "This match against Kaunas is more important to us than last season's UEFA Cup final," said the Rangers boss. WHAT? is it really? how desperate we sound. His priorities differ from the fans.Thats a problem.

2 so you have to support hibs or celtic to point out rangers are mince now is that what your saying.
I think in May you will see i was spot on.
Kaunas will be a threat for the CL pot of money which Rangers desperately need to pay for all the auld foggies wages don't kid yourself on, back to the odd league cup and mid table for Rangers in the coming seasons.

you dont think rangers fans know we are rubbish? of course we do, we have had to watch negative football since Mr Smith came back because "apparantly" he doesnt have the money to buy the nakamuras, vennegoors and the borucs, well how about he hired better scouts to find better talent, that would help, every passing day is getting worse, we need a solid injection of 2 or 3 players at 3-4m, he has wasted 6m on 3 strikers so he must have plenty left, or does he think Cousin is still worth 3m and might get a fee for him?, maybe he would get the 2m back he wasted on McCulloch?, but we are Rangers we dont SELL players we give them away.2 mickey mouse cups are not enough for this rangers fan, when we should have had 3 maybe even 4.

So a team that reached a European final, won two cups and went very close to winning the league is "rubbish"?

Walter Smith knows the team needs more strengthening, particularly in midfield. He presumably judges that we can get past Kaunas with what we've got. He should be right, though the tie is certaihnly not a formality.

As for Hearts fans, it's kind of touching that so many of them have almost immediate faith in their latest coach....

#5 eh, yeah, we are poor.alexander, broadoot, 39 yo Weir, Dailly, unfit Barry, Adam, McCulloch, Beasley, Darcheville and Cousin, yeah we are poor, we were lucky against Bremen and Lisbon, Zenit were there for the taking without there top scorer and Walter went defensive against an attacking team, surely you make them defend?, we didnt. The 2 cups were won with numerous replays against 1st division teams, poor performances, even playing defensive against them too and getting lucky. We lost the league because our squad wasnt strong enough, we were let down against top 6 sides especially away from home.Im not moaning about extra games, i would love to play for Rangers every day for free, but my body would only allow 3 games a week, that would do me lovely, the players believed the "tiredness" press. Its all about attitude. McGregor, Papac, Cuellar, Tommo, Whitts, Miller, Boyd, Laffs and Velicka would stay in my squad, we then build on that strength, we havnt. The tie v Kaunas should be a formality, remember were not just an SPL side, were Rangers.

you`re not wrong mate, too many, have forgotten what shape we were in before Walter arrived.
I`m sure he wouldn`t mind a few bob more in the transfer kitty.I`ve seen a few punters slag him for not splashing out,he can only spend as much as he`s given.

its his ability to spot talent and negotiate the move thats another problem, so far he has signed more flops than good players, only cuellar and weir have been a success for him, i think, although Velicka is a cracker,i cant forget how bad we were before Walter took over, no one will, but its not that much better, we still have poor players, we still struggle away in SPL and we do well in Europe, exact same as Le Dud. The talent being signed by Rangers is questionable, especially in midfield Dailly, McCulloch, Beasley, new contract for Adam who hasnt kicked a ball since, its not good enough to out fight or even beat most top 6 sides in SPL, thats proven with the fact we cant win away in the league. Our defensive set up is easy to play against, its easy to combat, we always give the ball away, retention is non existant at Ibrox.Creativity is non existant at Ibrox, for the moment anyway. Its seems like we lost Hutton for nothing, remember him?Our only creative player and we were robbed.

#9 you should know gorgie bhoy, most football fans in Edinburgh support the Glasgow Rangers.Im sure everything will be ok this time, the young team and neds cant travel alone, especially to an expensive destination like Lietuva.dour 2-0 at Ibrox and 1-1 away, thats what i think, hope im wrong, hope we thump them twice, Velicka hat trick.

Wouldn't surprise me if Durrant and Mcoist pull the boots back on for this season. He likes his pensioners, even tried to sign Steve Banks who is young at 34 for Walter Smith.

Take Ceullar out and very ordinary indeed and how much spent!!

HULLO...HULLO....WE ARE THE.....OH F***!

High comedy from the Weigie Unwashed - and after boring their way to last years UEFA Cup Final then dragging the name of Scottish football through the mud in Manchester, I feel no sympathy for them whatsoever. See you at Tynie soon for a guid tankin' by the resurgent HMFC!!

BTW - isn't our new home kit is the smartest in years?

And finally - no apologies for commenting on a non-HMFC thread. Plenty RFC 'fans' jump on JT threads with their bigoted drivel and Cardboard Gangster 'banter' - RIGHT BACK AT YE!!
