Published Date: 24 March 2008
EDINBURGH Accies coach Ian Barnes has taken a further swipe at Murrayfield bosses over Scottish rugby's youth policies.
Speaking after his side had lost 18-14 at Boroughmuir to leave them requiring a win at Heriot's on Saturday to have a chance of avoiding relegation – GHA and Stirling County can also still go down though in the case of the latter the prospects of tha
t happening are slim – Barnes hit out again at the way young players are taken from clubs for development.

"We are pulling players through and not buying players in (and not signing) former pros…

"Then the SRU kick us in the b**** at every opportunity," said Barnes in referring to himself as being on a "hobby horse". That was a throw-back to comments last month when Barnes claimed top prospects signed under the SRU academy system were then prevented from training with their clubs on the traditional Tuesday evening session and in some instances given fortnight-long breaks between matches.

Provoking his ire was a question linking Accies' present precarious plight with the possibility of continuing to give a Premiership Division One platform to a host of up-and-comings, the latest being teenage flanker Murray Smith who came off the bench for a debut.

With obvious pride in the BATS youth development set up comprising of themselves and two other North Edinburgh clubs, Broughton and Trinity Accies, Barnes said: "We had a really young side. At the end there were nine guys under 20 on the pitch. (For example] Murray Smith is a Penicuik lad with no rugby background who joined us and has come up through the Bats."

A former internationalist and Edinburgh European Cup coach, Barnes has long argued that promising players should be kept at clubs to draw on the experience of other individuals who have instead been allowed to become disenfranchised.

What an arrogant plonker!!
Next year they will be in Prem 2 and have even less chance of keeping decent players, not unless they are planning on spending even more to keep them.
I am fed up hearing him harping on about the BATs set up, often forgetting that they are but one of many youth development systems that deserve some plaudits.

And so, it was written - the SRU would one day fall from grace....

Be still, my tender flock!

Blessed be those who believe and live a life of true sanctity, particularly those souls who do not steal from the collection tins and the mouths of hungry widows and orphans in grassroots clubs throughout the whole country.

Indeed, the snarling scribes, the pharisees, the pisspoor president in his ceremonial robes, his nasty naked cronies and horrid hunchbacked henchmen will one day be held to account.

Go forth and look at :

Go on Barney! They don't like it up 'em at Muddlefield.

No doubt Mr Barnes will be invited to SRU Towers for a chat re his comments.

I now know how those dudes in Tibet feel at not being able to speak their mind....

I presume that this has happened in the past has slipped barnes mind in this interview. I'm pretty sure he has picked some pretty good players from other clubs at some point... But that probably doesn't count in his own world.

I seem to remember reading that there are some academy players have played every game for their respective clubs this year

SRU were a problem for Scottish rugby when I first played the sport there 40 years ago. Nothing has changed.

In my many years in the game I have seldom (nay never) agreed with Ian Barnes but this time he is right. It's of no consequence that in the past he has failed to practice what he now preaches. Everone is allowed a trip on the road to Damascus. Sadly I do not think the SRU will join him. They really are a shower.

whats arrogant about that?!??!!
Accies are developing young players and talent something that very few clubs do in Scotland.
I am sick of watching the drivel that Scotland play and one way to stop this is top get young players in to the setup to get rid of the likes of Parks……
There should we a quota for league 1 teams which ensures the ongoing of development young players.

11 snudge,

I agree with what IB had to say but this
"Accies are developing young players and talent something that very few clubs do in Scotland."
is utter and complete nonsense and is a slight on a large number of dedicated people/clubs who never get a mention/thankyou in newspapers .
Suggest you get around clubs away from Prem 1 - there IS life outwith that level believe me !!
Take in Stew Mell, RHC, Musselburgh, Forrester , Haddington , Peebles to name just a very few who have strong youth set ups and you will see how very wrong you are

Astonishing how that Barnes fellow manages to hold down his job on Sky TV in addition to doing such trenchant coaching stuff & SRU-bashing in his spare time.

BAH!!!! Must be burning the dashed candle at both ends, what? Either that, or totally fuelled up on the jolly old pink stuff....

I know what I'd prefer. Eh, sweetie??? She's such a dear.
