FRANCE centre Mathieu Bastareaud has been taken to hospital after admitting that he lied when he said he had been attacked after a defeat by New Zealand, his club president said yesterday.
"Yes, 'I can confirm it," Stade Francais president Max Guazzini said when asked about reports that the 20-year-old Bastareaud had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

Guazzini declined to elaborate, saying: "We have decided not to answer journalists because we believe they are largely responsible for the situation."

Bastareaud said he had been attacked by up to five people as he returned to the team hotel following a 14-10 loss to New Zealand on 20 June in Wellington. He later admitted he had lied after CCTV footage from the hotel showed him walking in uninjured.
