CRAIG CHALMERS has launched an outspoken attack on Frank Hadden, accusing the national coach of losing the dressing room.
In a scathing outburst Chalmers says the honeymoon ended for ex-Edinburgh mentor Hadden following the "nightmare" start against Italy at Murrayfield last season.

Then 21 early points were conceded from which Scotland never recovered. Phil Godman,
who occupied the stand-off role filled by Chalmers in 60 internationals from 1989-99 was dropped and hasn't played internationally since despite some observers believing he was following Hadden's tactical plan involving kicking over a rush defence.

Chalmers tells his column published today in Rugby World magazine: "There has been a loss of trust between Frank and his players and I think it stems from the nightmare start against Italy last year when we conceded 21 points.

"We've never really recovered from that and have played a lot less rugby since then."

Currently Melrose's coach, Chalmers pulled no punches when calling on Hadden to step down.

"Over the course of the (Six Nations) Championship I'd give Scotland three out of ten – there was no ambition and no end product. Frank's reign has run its course.

"We've become less ambitious as the years have gone by. Where is the purpose and creativity?"

Chalmers reserves most ire for the switching of Chris Paterson between positions notably prior to the loss in Rome last time out when he moved to wing when Nikki Walker dropped out with Dan Parks introduced at stand-off. He said: "The decision to move Chris Paterson to the wing ... was a disgrace.

"If you pick someone as a first-choice then you must keep him there.

"It must have been so demoralising for Chris to prepare to play (number) ten only to be shuttled back to the wing and hardly get a pass.

"It was such a negative selection. Why didn't he bring in Ben Cairns?

"It was mucking Chris about and in the end Dan Parks (at stand-off) had a shocker. Most of the Scottish public have lost faith in Dan at that level and it's not fair on him either to keep slagging him off."

Chalmers' remarks come as coach Hadden prepares to announce his squad for a two-Test tour of Argentina next month.

On the prospects of the tour, Chalmers added: "Frank will have Andy Robinson and Sean Lineen on board but it is fudging. Either Frank can do the job on his own or he can't."

Well said Mr Chalmers......it's good to see someone prepared to put his head above the parapet and tell it like it is. Far too many ex internationals are quite happy to keep quiet on this subject.

Fair Comment Chalmers (this time)

By putting the rest of the rugby nations thoughts into print Craig has probably scuppered any chance of him ever being involved with the Scotland set up. The beaks at the SRU dont particularly like up-starts pointing out the blatantly obvious to them.
But hey Craig never bottled it on the park so why start doing so of it.

Ok fair comment but chalmers should in future sit down and shut up. He won a mickey mouse cup thats most likely going to be scrapped in a couple of seasons so who does he think he is. Im no fan of frank Hadden but really scotland are so far behind and i dont mean England but teams like Italy and Argentina that no coach will improve the nation squad, improvement must start with kids then the senior squad will improve.

Well done Chick and well done Bill Lothian #4 Scotland aren't far behind Hadden has picked poorly in crucial positions. I would go as far as to say he is responsible for the ruination of Craig Paterson's career. He is a stand off if he isn't good enough don't pick him, his career has been judged as a full back, winger, part time stand off. He is now known as a utility back, what a pity Brian O'Driscoll and Jiordan Murphy aren't Scottish they would make fabulous utility backs also. Hadden picks schoolboy teams, ie put the best players on the park irrespective of specialist positions.

Fair comment Chick. Strange this interview was published in the same week Chalmers expressed his desire to coach at a higher level. Little or no chance of that happening in Scotland now.

Bones #5 - I agree with your post. However, Hadden is responsible for the continuation of the ruination of Paterson's career. The Italy debacle (2008 edition) was just the final straw. However, a succession of coaches continued to play Paterson on the wing and full back rather than play him at fly-half. Ireland's careful handling and development of O'Gara (eg using Humphreys for 60mins or picking a fly-half to suit the conditions) was surely the model that should have been employed by McGeechan and Williams. Hadden is just following the accepted theory. The problem for Hadden is: Paterson's lack of pace at international level has now caught up on him. It is a crying shame.

#4 What has Hadden ever won, the Scottish School Cup ? Chalmers has 60caps and many other playing honors. I think he is in a good position to comment.

at last an ex internationalist telling it as it is (hang your head scott hastings). of course no one will take any notice. perhaps a humping in argentina will do the trick or will hadden say the usual we will learnfrom this pumping and take forward the positives,
Used to like him but the fact that the gutless wonder let his asst coaches be hung out to dry to say his skin says it all about the man

While we're on the subject of Rugby World magazine, I note that they gave their 6 Nations 'Thumbs Down' Award to Frank Hadden for his treatment of Chris Paterson!

#8 well done on your stereotypical Scottish attitude. So the be-all-and-end-all is to beat England is it?

Get a grip.

Well done to Chalmers for saying what everyone else is thinking.

hardly a blistering attack, just telling it how it is and everyone knows it.

Chalmers is a complete prat. What a waste of column inches, Chalmers dredging up the same old same old. 2 years old in fact. And great timing to come out with this "losing the dressing room" nonsense with less than a month til the Argie tests, idiot!!!

#13 Are you living in that dark, dank broom cupboard in King Cod McKies office alongside Fun Time Feckless Haddock?

"Dredging up the same old, same old of two years ago" -

What does that tell you about the way the blazers, buffoons, alcohol consumers, business buddies and funny hand shakers at the top of the game are running it?

"Gottle of geer, gottle ov geer"!

luckyrugger,

Because it's just too bad he couldn't grow himself a pair in time to say it when it mattered; the Six Nations review is over, two of them for that matter. Instead he waits until the day the squad is announced to undermine the coaching staff. Brilliant, anyone can do that. Why does his opinion deserve any credit whatsoever?

In my eyes, he's a prat.

#13,16 Beating England is great but take a look at our present standing in world rugby and compare it with 1990 grand slam and 1991 world cup semi (very close to final).
You may not be a lover of Chalmers as a person but his rugby brain is miles ahead of Hadden’s and you have to respect that. Add to that, he is a winner.

luckyrugger,

Glasgow 08/05/2008 10:42:40
I don't dispute that, I am as unhappy with Hadden as most others. But my point is the timing of these comments. Chalmers is making these on a purely selfish basis, trying to undermine the current coaches (he said this week he would love to get into Pro team coaching). There is a time to shut up for the greater good and let them get on with the job, but by making these comments at this time, Chalmers has shown that he would rather Scotland fail just to prove himself right. That is dispicable.

Animal82,

Agre with No.7, disagree with No.8. Chalmers was part of a scottish team who won the grand slam, and went to the world cup semi final - a demoralising 17-18 years ago. I think he therfore has the right to speak up on what has been one of the most depressing years since 1990, in terms of international performance. I've said it before, but Hadden's continued employment stinks of mediorcity and amateurism.

King O The Picts,

Hadden has got problems but this is rich coming from the fat assed dwarf who forgot about Scotlands backline and screwed a million opportunities by running everything back into the forwards.
The fly half is the pivotal link between the forwards and the back line, how many times did this wee nyaff, rob the backs by running off the scrum base straight back at the opposing forwards, getting pinned down and leaving no link player to get it out to the wings.
I guess its easy to fling crap at others when you spent so long being crap Eh Craigie
