ROSS HIGH coach Graham Paris today heaped praise on his players after they clinched the East League Division One title with a 36-6 win against Dunbar on Saturday.
A large crowd turned out at Hallhill to see the clash between the East Lothian sides and an upset looked to be on the cards when the home side took a 6-5 lead into half-time. However, the men from Tranent stepped up a gear after the break to overwhel
m their hosts and become champions, with East Regional SRU Championship Committee representative Barry Sinclair on hand to present the silverware to skipper Chris Hutchison.
It means Ross High have bounced straight back from last season's relegation and have lost just four of their 17 league matches so far. Paris, who joined the club as coach last summer after a call from Ross High stalwart Mark Urwin, said: "It was a scrappy game on Saturday, but the guys' fitness showed in the second half and I am delighted for them.
"It is no secret that the club has been in freefall in recent seasons, but the players have turned out in good numbers and worked really hard for me. There is a lot of potential at this club."
As well as the first team, the seconds have been going well this season and with 12 or 13 colts set to step up to senior rugby next term competition for places will only intensify as they look to cement a place in the National Leagues.
Club president Scott Glynn added: "Graham Paris and the players have been terrific over the last few months and there is a real buzz about the place again."
Ross High will be joined in National League Division Three in 2008/09 by Hawick Linden, who just pipped Penicuik to the second promotion spot.
Leith's home draw with Hawick Harlequins on Saturday means the men from Easter Road drop into Division Two along with Earlston.
This coming Saturday sees Dalkeith take on Meggetland in the title decider in Division Two. Both are already promoted and both won on Saturday, but with some bad blood between the sides it promises to be a spicy affair.
Meanwhile, in the National Leagues, RHC Cougars won at Langholm to tighten their grip on a third place finish in Division One.
Forrester also look likely to finish third in Division Three, although a home loss to Howe of Fife on Saturday saw the latter clinch the title.
