Published Date: 24 March 2008
ROSS HIGH coach Graham Paris today heaped praise on his players after they clinched the East League Division One title with a 36-6 win against Dunbar on Saturday.
A large crowd turned out at Hallhill to see the clash between the East Lothian sides and an upset looked to be on the cards when the home side took a 6-5 lead into half-time. However, the men from Tranent stepped up a gear after the break to overwhel
m their hosts and become champions, with East Regional SRU Championship Committee representative Barry Sinclair on hand to present the silverware to skipper Chris Hutchison.

It means Ross High have bounced straight back from last season's relegation and have lost just four of their 17 league matches so far. Paris, who joined the club as coach last summer after a call from Ross High stalwart Mark Urwin, said: "It was a scrappy game on Saturday, but the guys' fitness showed in the second half and I am delighted for them.

"It is no secret that the club has been in freefall in recent seasons, but the players have turned out in good numbers and worked really hard for me. There is a lot of potential at this club."

As well as the first team, the seconds have been going well this season and with 12 or 13 colts set to step up to senior rugby next term competition for places will only intensify as they look to cement a place in the National Leagues.

Club president Scott Glynn added: "Graham Paris and the players have been terrific over the last few months and there is a real buzz about the place again."

Ross High will be joined in National League Division Three in 2008/09 by Hawick Linden, who just pipped Penicuik to the second promotion spot.

Leith's home draw with Hawick Harlequins on Saturday means the men from Easter Road drop into Division Two along with Earlston.

This coming Saturday sees Dalkeith take on Meggetland in the title decider in Division Two. Both are already promoted and both won on Saturday, but with some bad blood between the sides it promises to be a spicy affair.

Meanwhile, in the National Leagues, RHC Cougars won at Langholm to tighten their grip on a third place finish in Division One.

Forrester also look likely to finish third in Division Three, although a home loss to Howe of Fife on Saturday saw the latter clinch the title.

Good luck to Meggetland for their next game, hope you beat the moaning Dalkeith! Hope you use the association rules and ram it right up them!!

Big Smoke...how exactly do you come to the conclusion of 'moaning Dalkeith'? If you mean by them identifying bare faced liars, abusers and flagrant breakers of league rules and a team showing utter disrespect to other teams in the league, while officialdom refuses to take action for political reasons, then I would encourage all teams Dalkeith to take up moaning!

I would remind you that they have raised this from day-one, long before league positions became an issue!

Scottish Rugby is in a big enough mess without this sort of crap going on.

Meggetland RFC (Ringers From Colinton?) can field whomever they like on Saturday and even if they win 200-0, Dalkeith will still have the moral high ground and I know personally where I would rather be. A local team, which cannot currently field a seconds due to injury and unavailability!

Your comments on previous threads have shown that you have no time for anyone from Dalkeith having the temerity to question wrongdoing and bad sportsmanship, but then again you have also never seen fit to reply to the pro- Dalkeith man who continually trumpets this being about integrity... comments John?

Big Smoke,

unfortunatly I don't have to come back on and argue my case about Dalkeith. I am in the know, I have seen emails from 'offialdom' that show that Meggetland have done nothing wrong, exept from one occasion play a player that was not registered for any club, and the responce is that every other team in that league has at sometime done the same and they have.
I have only heard 3 clubs in the east leagues complain about Meggetland, they are Northern, Liberton & Dalkeith! Every other club official I have spoke to from other clubs have said Meggetland have done nothing wrong and are not bothered and relish the challenge from them.

Well done on promotion to east 1, but don't put down ambitious clubs like Meggetland that are looking at giving more folk a game of rugby on saturdays, maybe if Dalkeith & the rest of east 1 & 2 fallow their lead they might progress abit!

I suspect this Wednesday's meeting of the Edinburgh Clubs at Portobello will produce more bad blood than next Saturday's game.

Have the East Region Committee hired Kofi Annan to arbitrate?

Basically, and I have this on awfy good authority from a Muddlefield source, that Meggatland have been fingered on more occassions that a lady of the night down Salamander Street during the course of the season for flouting of the laws of the game.

However, time and time again these allegations have been akin to those that have cost the Daily Express a wad of notes last week with the McCanns' - without foundation.

And there is only one team going up from East 1 - Duns dropping down to replace Ross High who, I understand, were by far the best rugby side in their Division this year.

Gents, I can assure you that the continued Meggetland rule-breaking has been reported at length to officialdom and substantiated. It also involves more than one player and one match as unregistered!

However, as #2 points out there is no POLITICAL will to take action against them, despite them breaking the same rules that cost Gala YM so dear in 2006/07! This is what has really got peoples back up!

Big Smoke... Liberton, Dalkeith, Inverleith, Northern, and Walkerburn have all voiced concerns over MRFC actions. Leaving Gala YM - pots and kettles, BATs - not interested as another shadow club, two student sides and 6 men and a dug at St Boswells! Therefore, all bona-fide local clubs ARE concerned!! Presumably you spoke to Moray House and Dick Vet???

How it can be claimed that they have done nothing wrong when the count so far is..
1. Lied to league clubs over accepting promotion.
2. Lied to league clubs over playing only their own pool of registered players.
3. Have not informed officals or ref in any game of associated players playing for them.
4. Played unregistered players.
5. Assured East League committee that rules would be followed to the letter post Christmas.

Given the rules free for all, I hear Dalkeith will be appraoching Musselburgh and Haddington for half a dozen players for Saturday!

Big Smoke; #2 does not ask you to come back and argue about Dalkeith, he asks for comments on integrity, which yet again you have side stepped!!!

I would also take exception to calling Meggetland an ambitious club. Boroughmuir have taken this action entirely for their own ends and their behaviour during the league season merely confirms this.

If the SRU had not chickened out over making a decision on league re-structure it might not have happened and the blame for all of this lies firmly at their door! You can guarantee that Mr McKie saw a cost implication within any league rugby review and vetoed it for the moment!!!!!

I have to say that my feeling is that the old Edinburgh committee would have this sorted out before Christmas, but the new structure leaves everyone in limbo.

Good luck to both sides, despite what the reporter says about bad blood that's all off the pitch hopefully and a good game can be enjoyed by all and everyone involved can have a good game. Can't we all just get along?

Cyber hugs all round then....

Dalkeith 25/03/2008 21:40:49
Big Smoke you really dont know as much as you make out. To say that every club in the league has played an unregistered player or a player registered to another team is completely WRONG.
I am the coach of Dalkeith and I can tell you categorically Dalkeith has not done that. I have even played my 16 year old son rather than break the rules. So anytime you want to apologise for that remark and admit you are wrong then I'll gladly accept. Sat will be a good game whoever wins and I'm sure lots of drink will be taken. Good luck to both teams (but mainly to mine)I've got a case of beer in my car that I will give to meggetland if they manage to beat us and win the league so you can forget your "moaning Dalkeith" comment as well.Would be nice if you were actually brave enough to identify yourself and put your money where your mouth is. Send a case of beer to Dalkeith and I'll make sure the winners get that too. Wont hold my breath for any of those things happening though

Congratulations to all the lads at Ross High, brilliant news and hopefully you can go on to bigger and better things.

#9 - Are you not breaking the rules by playing a 16 year old?

Perhaps Big Smoke is wrong with EVERY Club having flouted with the Laws, but I understand that 'Several' have played with either non-registered players or simply have not posted their Teams on-line as per the Competition Rule requirements.

Better try bottles of beer as it must be hard to get the ring-pulls off them tins with a fist full of thumbs.....

So, who's all up for tonight's Yawn-a-thon at Porty.....
12

Big Smoke,

Major 1, read the comment 'I am in the know, I have seen emails from 'offialdom' that show that Meggetland have done nothing wrong, exept from one occasion play a player that was not registered for any club, and the responce is that every other team in that league has at sometime done the same and they have'

So that means that comment comes from officials in the SRU that I am incontact with, that is how I am in the know and for the record I played for your club about 6 seasons ago on 2 occasions in the league and was never registered! Get a statto on that one to find out who I am!

and to start coming outwith, 'they said this at the start of the season' doesn't hold any weight unfortunatly!

Super woofer, it is ok to play 16 year olds in a game, as long as they are registered that is!

please remember the teams oppossing Meggetland, YOU had the reservations about them joining in the first place, YOU let them in, YOU live with it and infact I am a member of one of the clubs that you listed as voicing concerns and we have done no such thing and speaking to another club last night in your list also, they have done no voicing either!

Oh and has anyone actually asked Meggetland if they want promotion? They could still win the league and opt not to go up!!
13

Monstro,

26/03/2008 16:58:03
Big Smoke, the clubs I listed as having concerns were following conversations with club officials, not necessarily by way of official complaints, so maybe some have been disingenuous with me..or you!

The official e-mails only tell half the story and my post at #5 details those charges that everyone recognises Meggetland are guilty of even the East League committee!

Moreover, ‘we let them in’ after assurances on their behaviour, which they plain lied about, is that okay is it? Lying for your own ends? This is rugby for God’s sake, we are supposed to be one of the last bastions of fair play and sportsmanship, but the premier team in the country is hardly leading by example and the politics behind officialdoms lack of action leaves a really bad taste.

Stop making excuses for it and justifying anything that Meggetland have done since they made their false promises in June 2007.

For the umpteenth time, it comes down to one word INTEGRITY!!!!
14

Fat one,

Edinburgh 26/03/2008 17:29:03
Hope the Major is who he says he is, at least we know there are some people out there to play/coach and enjoy winning rugby. It appears that as usual, there is a small minority in all the clubs causing hassle and moaning non-stop. I would point out that the suggestion that city clubs have massive resources is false, they have to penny pinch as much as anyone else, you would probably find more cash and payments in leagues 2 & 3. As for the suggestions that clubs such as Meggetland pick and choose from the Boroughmuir squad sounds like moaning, they are not going to win Prem 1 by putting some of their players in the Meggetland squad each week, it is more likely that they lose players up the ranks when there are injuries or down the ranks when they are fielding a 4xv. Pleased let common sense prevail snd ignore the ignorant few.

The Super Woofer,

Bring back pies and beans after matches. A pint with your opposite number and get teams to mingle instead of sitting at opposite ends of the clubhouse.

Get rid of useless SRU Committees (Google the word nepotism and SRU is surely one of the first items?) and let those who run the Clubs run the leagues.
16

Monstro,

26/03/2008 18:20:36
For the first time I am in complete and absolute agreement with you!!!!
