THE SRU'S bid to bring more high-profile sporting events to Murrayfield will take another step forward on Monday when it is announced that the Heineken Cup Final is to return to the Scottish capital next season.

The prestigious European final was first held at Murrayfield in 2005, when Toulouse defeated Stade Francais after extra-time, in front of more than 51,000 supporters after three times being hosted by Cardiff and twice each in France, England and Ir
eland.

The final returned to Wales' Millennium Stadium in 2006, London last year and will next weekend be contested again in Cardiff, by Toulouse and Munster.

The European Rugby Cup organisers will be back at Edinburgh Castle on Monday to confirm that the final is heading back to Scotland at a time when the two remaining Scottish teams appear to be in better health than at any time previously.

Meanwhile, Colin Gregor, the Glasgow stand-off and sevens star, returns to the Scotland sevens squad for the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s, at Murrayfield on 31 May-1 June. The final event of the IRB World Sevens Series will be the first opportunity to see the squad in action on home soil since winning the 125th Melrose Sevens as the Scottish Thistles.

The Scotland women's team play Wales this evening in the quarter-finals of the FIRA-AER European Championships at the National Rugby Centre in Amsterdam. If the Scots win, they will face the winners of France v Holland in the last four.

Scotland 7s squad: S Forrest (Ayr) capt, M Adamson (Glasgow), B Addison (Stirling County), G Anderson (Ayr), C Fusaro (Heriot's), C Gregor (Glasgow), G Laidlaw (Edinburgh), S Lawrie (Edinburgh), C Shaw (Glasgow), J Thompson (Heriot's), A Turnbull (Edinburgh), R Vernon (Glasgow).

Scotland Women (v Wales in Amsterdam, 5.30pm): H Lockhart (Hillhead/Jordanhill); S-L Walker (Watsonians), B Dickens (Murrayfield Wanderers), Jill McCord (RHC) capt, L Wheeler (Blaydon); L Moffat (RHC), L Reid (RHC); K Holdsworth (Watsonians), S Gill (Murrayfield Wanderers), E Kerr (Richmond), C D'Silva (RHC), S Newton (Blaydon), R Fitzpatrick (RHC), T Griffiths (RHC), L Millard (Murrayfield Wanderers). Subs: J Hutchison (Hillhead/Jordanhill), L Forsyth (RHC), A Pratt (Watsonians), R Slaven (Murrayfield Wanderers), L Dalgleish (RHC), L Steven (Murrayfield Wanderers), L Douglas (Richmond).

There doesn't need to be a Scottish finalist for this to be good for Scottish rugby. Obviously we can all dream that Edinburgh or Glasgow can show more consistency in Europe and finally get to the Quarters after a long absence but I, for one, just hope that the final next year isn't between 2 French sides as it was in 2005 in Edinburgh. I went to the game and it was bloody boring. If Edinburgh and Glasgow can put Munster to the sword in the Magners League then they can do it in Europe, they just have to realise that they are playing the same falable team. Munster don't become awesome just because it is a European match...they just have the big game mentality that, until recently, has been lacking in the Scottish game. The recent form of Edinburgh and Glasgow suggests that a Quarter final or even Semi in Europe may not be too far away from the Scottish teams.
I for one am quite proud of how the teams played this year. Role on the 2008/09 season!
