Published Date: 07 May 2008
AN EDINBURGH rugby club today denounced plans by Murrayfield bosses to scrap the national knock-out cup next season as "criminal".
The attack by national league side, Broughton, comes as formal notification to petition for a change that would see localised friendlies introduced instead is posted on the SRU website.

The issue was revealed by the Evening News on April 24 and s
ince then other sources have also indicated the governing body wish to clear the decks for even more representative fixtures.

Mark Brown, president of Broughton, says the Cup must stay, arguing: "We have had some cracking games at Wardie over the last two years. To deny players the chance to play and the club the opportunity to raise vital cash from these glamour ties is criminal."

Brown contacted the Evening News to say that last weekend's finals day is proof of interest.

"I am sure that the 6,000-strong crowd plus the clubs would disagree (with plans to drop the cup). What better feeling could any amateur player have than to play in a Cup Final at one of the world's most famous sporting arenas? Now the SRU want to deny that 'tell your Grandchildren story' fairytale to all players."

The SRU explanation of the thinking behind a motion to be proposed by SRU chairman Allan Munro and president George Jack says: "The scheduling of competitive fixtures on international weekends has met with considerable criticism."

I'm not a rugby man, but how can the SRU contemplate scrapping a national tournament in favour of "more representative fixtures"? Scrap the meaningless friendlies that they seem to think are preferrable. I'm quite sure the majority of players and supporters would prefer their chance at Murrayfiled glory over any localised fixtures.

Just have to agree with Broon.

There are too many fixtures to fit into the current season. This is because we have 12 team leagues playing 22 league games.

So what is the answer from George Jack? Scrap the Cup.

There are clubs still fulfilling fixtures in May. This means they have had a season running from mid July (start of pre-season) to mid May. And we wonder why we are losing grassroots players.

Btw, by grassroots I do not mean the P1 player who trains 5 nights a week, but the player who wants to train once or twice a week and have a hard, competitive game on the Saturday. The same guys who would love to play at Murrayfield in a cup final. However, more importantly, the target market for international and pro-team support.

Well said Mark Brown !!!!
I agree with all he has written - a golfer can stand on the same tee as Arnold Palmer at St Andrew's etc., but the chances of a club player ever running out at Murrayfield are remote.
I was lucky enough to play twice in the sevens at Murrayfield back in the 1950/60's and am now able to do the 'tell your Grandchildren story' bit !!

I have only missed one finals day ( this year due to ill health) although only once was a club I support playing.
Everyone was a great day out and a triumph for "real" rugby !!
Keep the Cup pleaaaaaaase !!!!!!

King Cod's lost the plot completely. Time to tell this halwit to feckless off, along with his broom cupboard dwelling muppet puppet Haddock.

Does he realise that Scottish Rugby consists more than two mediocre so called professional teams?

It's a very poor decision.
