Published Date: 01 July 2008
SCOTLAND rugby star Marcus Di Rollo today confirmed his time at European rugby giants Toulouse is over.
The 30-year-old centre, from Edinburgh, has resigned himself to being victim of an impasse arising from conflicting medical opinion over a cardiac issue he has carried since birth.

A short statement in the French media today indicated that the de
al which saw Di Rollo leave Edinburgh last summer for Toulouse where he was to play just one minute of rugby in the subsequent season as a result of his heart problem was about to finally fall through – prompting mixed feelings from Di Rollo.

On the one hand he will soon be free to pursue rugby employment virtually anywhere other than France where doctors refused to countenance him playing, albeit Di Rollo stressed nothing has yet been decided so far as future assignments are concerned.

The down side is that the former Watsonians ace knows full well the quality of the club he is about to leave, having been on the staff as they reached the Heineken European Cup Final before wrapping up the French domestic title for the 17th time at the weekend.

"Nothing has been decided other than the fact I will not be a Toulouse player next year," said Di Rollo. "There are still one or two things to get sorted out and it is slow going.

"The whole matter has been going on for so long but when I return to Toulouse in a couple of weeks from Edinburgh I'll hopefully get things sorted. I can't get anybody to talk to in the (club) office."

It was when Di Rollo undertook a seemingly routine medical on joining Toulouse that a heart abnormality was revealed.

Scottish doctors had long been aware but had cleared him to play and he has been able to reach the 21-cap mark so far.

Di Rollo added: "One of the difficulties has been being in limbo. I had a letter which must have been from the International Board clearing me to play in the World Cup, ironically in France, and there have certainly been ups and downs in the past year.

"I would come for tests in Britain and return to France with good results only to find it didn't help over there.

"The condition was something I was born with and so long as I kept getting checked out they (doctors) were happy.

"Anywhere else, including the UK, I'd have got on with my rugby. I was looking for a fresh start and a fresh challenge in Toulouse.

"It certainly would have been an awesome season to have been involved but the European Cup run had everybody asking questions again. The questions were the same in Scotland and in France.

"Sometimes things were looking good for to get back playing, then it would look pretty bleak.

"That's life I suppose ..."

In vowing to draw strength from his rugby ordeal, Di Rollo has paid tribute to his wife Leanne and other members of his family for the support they have afforded him, while national coach Frank Hadden also received a special mention.

"Leanne has been through this with me every step of the way and I'm grateful for all the support I've received," he continued.

"I spoke with Frank Hadden after he picked me for the Scotland A squad for the recent Barclay's Churchill Cup in North America (Di Rollo was subsequently forced to pull out) and it was encouraging that he was obviously keen to get me back in the saddle.

"Yes, I do believe in that saying 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' and hopefully I can draw on that in the future."

No disrespect Marcus, but your leaving Edinburgh made way for the further development of both Cairns and De Luca. With Houston and especially Macrae as very able back-up and even Webster able to play at 13, I trust the SRU will not look to bring back Di Rollo to Edinburgh.

Would Glasgow benefit from Marcus joining them?

If not, then it will be interesting to see if MDR attracts offers from outside Scotland.

My own club could do with a decent centre. Maybe Marcus fancies dropping down the leagues a bit (well a lot really).

As far as international caps go, Marcus. Think Blackjack. Stick on 21!

I really hope the SRU don't waste money in signing him, maybe he could get a contract at Lasswade?

#1, are you trying to sabotage Glasgow by suggesting marcus joins them!

He will be signed up immediately by the SRU and placed on Glasgow's books. SRU - the fall-back pension plan for failing and aiing rugby 'stars'. (Only friends of Frank Hadden need apply.)

It is interesting that Di Rollo would be medically fit to play in Scotland, whereas Barry Stewart could actually play in the GP and yet not turn out for Scotland because of his neck.

He is rubbish - I hope the SRU don't sign him.

He's a waist of money

He thought he was too good for Edinburgh....... now look who's begging Hadden!!

#2 I hear Lasswade are spending big this season. Good luck to them.

#3 Not at all. I think the answer to my question would be no. However, Gibson has been poor, Barrow is off, so the Warriors only have Morrison & Henderson for centre (unless I have forgotten someone - tried to look up the squad online, but need to register on Warriors site and that is taking research too far!).

#4 I too thought of the irony around Barry Stewart, but the difference is that what stops BS playing for Scotland is that the insurance paid out after his injury and if he played again for Scotland, then this money would need to be paid back.

I hope you are wrong about Hadden putting pressure on SRU to bring MDR back, but suspect you are bang on here. MDR himself seems to allude to FH still thinking Marcus has an international future. They are both on the same wavelength as they both seem to think that rugby is a non-contact sport.

He's a totally underrated player and one of the only outside backs we have with world class handling skills (which is why Toulouse signed him).

He had one below par 6 nations but he's got a lot to offer. Particularly given the lack of skill in our midfield this year pre Argentina.

The headline makes me laugh the most....RUGBY STAR....

I saw an add in the Toulouse Local paper already advertising for a new boot boy.........

If you read this Di Rollo, many real and decent rugby players dream of a Scottish cap so you just take yours and hide behind your father and Haddock.......

#7 exactly the opposite, he had 1 par 6 Nations plus Edinburgh season and the rest of the time well below. I remember at one time that season raving about his superb tackling and his handling, but he was too up and down to justify continued selection and just never gave the impression he could break through any backs line or create gaps like Cairns, De Luca and Dewey can/could. I'd much rather have John Houston and Matt Dey in the Edinburgh team than MDR as the next layer after Cairns and De Luca.

#7 "He's a totally underrated player and one of the only outside backs we have with world class handling skills (which is why Toulouse signed him)"

Either I am very drunk and hallucinating or someone has just described MDR as having world class hands – now that’s funny :).

These world class handling skills – just how many tries has Di Rollo set up with these at Outside centre for Scotland – eh none would be the answer to that.

The greatest mystery ever in rugby – why Toulouse signed MDR?

MDR is a fine young man. Unfortunately, can't say the same about Feckless Frank(enstein) Hardcock.

#5 Bawbag!!!! When did he ever say he was too good for Edin??? He got the oppertunity to go on the books of 1 of the biggest clubs in world rugby and grabbed the chance!!! You me and a million others would have done the exact same thing!!!
If you have nothing sensible to add why post at all?

Alistair Macintosh,

SRU PLEASE DO NOT RE SIGN HIM!!!!
Every team that played Edinburgh targeted him as the weak defensive link. Teams worked moves just to run through De Rolleyover.

I remember playing against him when he was at school. He was really poor in defence even then, although he was bloody quick. I will put my hands up and say he went round me twice in the game I played, but I would also say I ran over the top of him every time we went to tackle me. I was always confused at how he played for Scotland so many times.
The easy way to decide if a player is good is to imagine playing against them:
Brian O'Driscoll - no thanks, he'd make me look fullish
Rob Dewey - no thanks, he would have my ahoulder broken within an hour
Ma'a Nonu - no thanks, he would be like playing a combo of Dewey and O'Driscoll
DiRollo - yes please. Rush him in defense and run at him all day long...great!!!
I have a few mates playing for Edinburgh and they confirm that when he was there, he had a clause in his contract that he had to be the highest paid player on their books! I don't think the SRU need any more pre-madonna's with a one dimensional game. DiRollo's one dimension was good at Watsons, steady at Edinburgh, but poor for Scotland. I guess people need to realise that a good club player doesn't necessarily make a good international player!

I find it sad that you guys have nothing but horrible things to say about Marcus. He has played every age group in Scotland and played for edinburgh for 7 years. he is home grown talent and stayed loyal to Edinburgh and Scotland for a long time turning down various deals to leave along the way. He was one of the nicest players at Edinburgh and would always have plenty of time to speak with the fans after the game. I think that you guys have far too much time on your hands and clearly know nothing about rugby. What i seem to find pretty hard to understand is that you critisize him yet Guy noves the most successful and well respected Coach in European rugby chose to sign him!!! you guys must know alot if you know better than him. I wish him all the best in the future and hope his health problems are resolved.

CB1,

#18, Di Rollo is clearly one of those players that was in the right place at the right time. He has never been a great player and in my opinion should never have been given a cap. Now i dont know him personally as you appear to, all i have to go on is how he played on the pitch and that is enough evidence for me. I just feel sorry for the players who might have slipped through the net while Di Rollo kept his place.

I am sure MDR is big enough and old enough to take all of this in his stride.

As a big fat forward, I want to see my backs have a bit of backbone.

All too often when watching both Edinburgh and Scotland I would witness MDR backing away from contact, not commiting to the tackle or making a heroic dive at the player instead of tracking down.

Mate of mine went on tour with Marcus a few years back and said he was good craic. Still does not make him a international class player.

jaad,

EDINBURGH 03/07/2008 07:17:33
#12 That is the point, if he'd realised that he's rubbish he wouldn't have left and now wouldn't be unemployed.

he can't have honestly thought he was going to go to one of the biggest and best clubs in the world and got a 1st team place.

sometimes you have to look at the big picture.

thank god he did leave Edinburgh, it freed up a lot of cash and now we have MUCH better players that have "replayed him"

He's pump, when has he ever controlled a game or been described as "awesome" other than by himself
22

Big Smoke,

03/07/2008 14:24:48
If he has good craic on the beers, he might get a game down broughton. Their giving beer away for good performance. I hear they are playing in Sky blue and white stripes this year!!
