Scotland manager George Burley has explained the three surprise call-ups to his squad for the friendly against Northern Ireland at Hampden on August 20.
Scotland manager George Burley has explained the three surprise call-ups to his squad for the friendly against Northern Ireland at Hampden on August 20.

Derby County winger Kris Commons, an Englishman who qualifies through his grandparents, is joined by Falkirk skipper Darren Barr, who is also named in the senior squad for the first time.

Preston defender Callum Davidson returns to the Scotland set-up at the age of 32 after six years in the wilderness.

On Commons, Burley said: "I became aware that Kris could qualify for Scotland a few months ago.

"I saw a lot of him when I was manager of Derby and he was at Nottingham Forest.

"He transferred to Derby in the summer and I had him watched.

"I think he will give us a different dimension. He is a boy with a lot of ability, he is a naturally left-sided winger and maybe we have lacked width in the squad.

"I spoke to the boy and he was keen and enthusiastic to join the squad."

Burley insists Barr and Davidson, who has been capped 17 times, bring a mixture of youth and experience to his squad for what will be the last friendly match before the 2010 World Cup qualifiers begin next month with a double-header against Macedonia and Iceland.

The Scotland boss said: "Callum is an experienced player who has played for Scotland in the past.

"He did very well for Preston and I watched him in a pre-season game against Motherwell.

"He is fit and injury-free and this is an opportunity to look at him.

"Darren Barr is one for the future. He was involved with the B squad last year and he is still finding his way.

"But this was another good opportunity to bring a young player in."

Calum Davidson back - jings crivvens, help ma boab; what happened to the boy McEveley, who I thught did all right when in the squad - inconsistency of selection there.

Whittaker in - c'moan Burley, ye'r havin a laugh - Broadfoot has been playing better, which says it all.

Who's going to make the square passes without Bazza? - still we might get some momentum going.

1# fair enough whittaker but Badfoot cmon are you wearing blue tinted specks that ye cannae see how much he losses balls and cant tackle. This is a friendly and Burley wants to try something new, the guy has great football tactics, and knows how to spot a player so wheeeeesht n let our manager do his job and judge what happens on the pitch rather than jump the gun.

Your surely can't mean the Kirk Broadfoot who turns out in a Rangers strip do you? There must be another Broadfoot somewhere that you know about who is actually a good footballer? Seriously, you must be at the wind up, he was out of his depth at St. Mirren!

Oi, #2 and #3, try flippin' reading the guy's post before leaping in with both feet - he's not advocating a call-up for Broadfoot, he's saying that if even Broadfoot's playing better than Whittaker, what's SW doing in the squad in the first place?

gee, I wonder who you could be talking about? Before your paranoia runs away with you, I very much doubt Mr Commons would have chosen to play for Scotland if England had been calling for him as well.

And that's the difference, he is not turning down his own country to play for Scotland. The same way Ray Houghton, Tommy Coyne and Owen Coyle took no abuse from Scots because they chose Ireland when it became obvious they weren't going to get picked for their own country.

Mercenary rather than reasonable I would have said. it's his choice but one it would be unrealistic not to expect abuse for.

On Commons, give me a break. are you seriously suggesting if he thought there was any chance of a game for England he'd be choosing Scotland? I have no idea if he's good enough for Scotland either, but he will at least be able to prove this one way or another.

If people think he's Scottish that's up to them to defend, no me. He will get my support when he pulls on the jersey though.

Everyone and their uncle will be giving their two cents of criticism of the lineup, but Burley will do better than we give him credit.... And mine would be:
- pull Mcfadden out of the front often lone striker role and put him in the left wing... been doing a good job of that at Birmingham of late. One of our best players in one of our weakest positions.
- bring Paul McGowan into the squad. In form at Celtic lately.
- where is Allan Hutton?
Good luck

I really have no desire to go over the McGeady issue again for the 10 millionth time, but since you ask, are you at the wind-up?

Butcher was born in Singapore to English parents and lived in England for almost his whole life. He's English. Why would he choose to play for Singapore?

McGeady was born in Scotland, to Scottish parents and has lived here his whole life. He's Scottish.

you're being disingenuous. Residence, birthplace, Parentage and Ancestry are the key components of nationality. Terry Butcher is an Englishman who was born in Singapore. Aiden McGeady is a Scotsman who chose to play for Ireland. Butcher qualifies for England through three of those criteria.
McGeady qualified for Ireland through ancestry only. I would humbly suggest that if you are born in a stable, to two horses, you are a horse. Even if one of your grandparents was a mule ;-)

you must be at the wind-up, I was right. Once more then, slowly, because it's getting tedious.

Nationality is made up of 4 factors, as a I said before. Parentage, birthplace, ancestry and residence. I'd argue that parentage is the most important, and the other three are fairly interchangeable, but all are a part of it.

McGeady's nationality is Scottish, to me, because 3 of those things make him so. Butcher is English because three of those things make him so. They're both pretty clear cut cases.

People get upset with McGeady because the perception is he chose Ireland for selfish reasons when he is quite clearly Scottish. There is no doubt he is qualified to play for Ireland.

41..Who decides the criteria for natioality? You? Wikipedia? the RST?
McGeady chose Ireland after he was sidelined by the SFA at schoolboy level..the boy could see that there was no chance of getting on in the set up there so,like every footie player, weighed up his options and chose the route of so many that have fallen foul of the mandarins at the SFA and signed for their ancestral countries...

I dont, for one moment, believe that McGeady could tell you who the taoiseach is but thats not important to an ambitious football player who wants to make the best of himself..Just ask a certain Spanish defender currently looking for digs in Birmingham

I always tell people that I gave up playing football because at that time you HAD to play for the country of your birth and as I was born in Bedford during WW2 that meant I would have had to play for England which of course was not on. Joe and Gerry Baker played for England and the USA respectively despite being as scottish as tablet. Aiden McGeady is obviously good enough to play for Scotland but feels because of his heritage he would prefer to play for Ireland which is entirely his perogative. At least he won't get booed by a large section of the crowd then.
I have a pal who was born and bred and still lives in London, both his parents were Irish and so he feels more Irish than English and apart from cricket always supports Ireland in all sports and there is nothing wrong with that.

Seriously, what are you blathering on about? Where did I ever say McGeady wasn't eligible for Ireland? I've explictly said twice that he is, and is perfectly entitled to make that choice. That doesn't mean that people have to agree that it was a good choice.

I don't boo McGeady, and i'm not bitter, he's made his choice and that should be the end of it. but I understand why people do abuse him for it. As I said in my first post, it's not, in my opinion, because he chose to play for Ireland (see Coyne, Houghton, Coyle) whe nhe is Scottish, but because he chose them in preference when Scotland needed good players and he was still eligible to play for Scotland.

They're no 'my' rules btw. Those are the four criteria on which you can play for a country. Birth, ancestry, parentage and citizenship (usually achieved through residency)

And I've already said Commons is English. he will remain English. He's eligible for Scotland though . the difference between him and McGeady is that England aren't beating down his door to ask him to play. and if they were I'm pretty sure he would be choosing England.

I'll be happy with Commons if he's good enough.
I'm no happy McGeady chose Ireland but it's his choice

I think my 'desperate differentiator' is the main difference I'm afraid. McGeady was asked by Scotland and Ireland to play for them. he chose Ireland when he is obviously Scottish. Unless you know something I don't, Fabio Cappello isn't sitting devastated having been rebuffed by him in favour of a dream Scotland call-up.

So the cases aren't the same. they are only the same in that they both qualify for the country they have been chosen by.

Your last point betrays your agenda for me. You want to believe that people turned on him for his celtic connections. that might be the case for some, for most it is a feeling that he has snubbed Scotland despite his Scottishness.
41

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

#52 The action is not the same as no player, including Commons, has chosen to play for Scotland when asked to play for England. So Scotland fans have a right to show their displeasure at McGeady's decision to join a rival team in the way football fans do anywhere - boo and shout. His nationality is not relevant as he is Scottish through and through so can hardly be abused for being Irish!

Do try to separate Scotland fans from Rangers fans. We don't all live in the west but we do all know that many Rangers and Celtic fans have a thing about Ireland for different reasons. The majority of Scotland doesn't know or really care what all that is about as we don't experience it. McGeady was a glory hunter pure and simple - like most OF fans from Ireland, Scotland or wherever -as Scotland were rubbish at the time of his decision.

Commons is NOT Scottish therefore should not be picked for Scotlands national side, it's simple, aye, fifa rules this that and the other, the simple fact is that it is SCOTLANDS national side, not a club side.
It is irrelevant how good he is, Scotland is not a cast offs team and should not be treated as one.
If yer Scottish yer Scottish if yer not then you should not be playing for Scotlands national football team end of story.

#58 All I know is McGeady is a Scot who chose to play for another country. As a Scot (who is more Irish than him incidentally - at least I have one Irish parent) I find that strange to understand, but then I'm not from Glasgow. It could have been any country ad I would feel the same. You're right - it's his decision but that doesn't mean Scotland fans (not Rangers fans) have to agree with it. It's a sad indictment of Glasgow that someone can be born and brought up in Scotland to Scottish parents yet feel Irish. The Irish themselves have a name for people who crave being Irish, whether they're from America, Scotland or wherever - Plastic Paddies. However, I would feel the same if the other country was England or Poland. If everyone in Canada or America or Australia played for the countries of their grandparents those countries would have no teams. The main issue here is how it's possible for someone to feel closer ties to Ireland than Scotland after growing up in Scotland to Scottish parents. Maybe you can explain how that works?

#64 Whatever his reasons were (and I've read conflicting reports - the one I've read most from him is it was down to his grandfather and holidays in Ireland), the one thing that is trues is that he still could have chosen to play for Scotland - every Scottish schoolboy's dream. As I said, it's hard for me to understand. I would get pelters from my friends if I chose to play for a country other than Scotland. Anyhow I should know better than get dragged into the murky world of Old Firm obsessed "football fans".

McGeady aside, and let's leave it aside cause it is a dull, dead issue which the two sides disagree on, I'm quite happy with the make up of the squad.

Burley has got rid of the old blood (only two players aged 30 or over) and is going for technically good players over some of the carthorses such as Lee McCulloch. I would hope he picks as close to his 1dt choice team as possible in the first half, then gives guys like Fletcher and Barr a run out against a team who they could do well against.

Its a pity that the lad chose ROI. as Scotland could certainly have used his talents on the park, but the player has made his choice.

I do think that when the player made it known what country he wanted to play for Scotland were well behind the ROI. in the FIFA rankings, if my memory is correct. I just wonder if that also was part of the lads decision not to play for Scotland. Just a thought.

Yes he chose Scotland because of his background and he felt close to his Irish roots. As I said before, the Irish call these people who go on about their Irish ancestors and say they're Irish when they are actually American or Canadian or Scottish Plastic Paddies. So it was his choice but a very unusual one. As I said, if everyone played for the countries of their ancestors, countries like Australia would have no players if everyone felt that way and Ireland's team would be full of foreigners. We need McGeady and he turned us down. If one of the most talented Irish players selected Scotland over Ireland because of his Scottish gran, I'm sure Ireland's supporters would feel betrayed.

For me, the fact that McGeady grew up in Scotland with Scottish parents yet felt a closer bond to Ireland represents what is wrong with the west of Scotland. Nothing against Ireland - everything against the divisiveness and tribalry that goes far beyond football and has allowed the Old Firm to grow to the size of clubs they both are. They're not this big because they're football's any good after all!

Just my opinion anyhow. I'd qualify for Ireland, England and Scotland (if I was any good) but my parents and grandparents didn't spend their days telling me I was IRish/English/Scottish, although I am very close to the various family strands. I grew up in Scotland with Scottish mates supporting Scotland, therefore am Scottish. McGeady's is an unusual case - nothing like Canning, Houghton or even Owen Hargreaves (Canada and England are hardly similar in stature as with ireland and Scotland, plus he hardly grew up in Canada). Incidentally, he's not that popular with hard-core Canadian "soccer" fans for turngin his back on his native country (what few of them there are).

If ever a rule should be earmarked for the dung heap it's surely this one.
The finest Scottish teams in my days were 100% home bred and Burley should forget what they do in England and concentrate on our own youngsters for the future.
England would sign "Auld Nick" and claim him to be related in some way or other if they thought he would help them to win a match! Where would they be without black and coloured players now? Probably, in a worse state than our Scottish team which normally gets scant recognition south of the border at the best of times.
