Czechs hand Burley his first defeat but Scots debutant gets his name on the scoresheet in tough test

Czech Republic 3 - 1 Scotland
David Clarkson marked his Scotland debut with a goal – but it was not enough to prevent the first defeat of the George Burley era against the Czech Republic in Prague tonight.

Former Rangers misfit Libor Sionko claimed a double and Michal Kadlec was also on the scoresheet as the home nation ran out comfortable winners.

This was Burley's first away game and he always knew it would be a tough test against a country ranked sixth in the world and heading for Euro 2008 this summer.

Like Burley's debut against Croatia in March, the build-up to this match had been overshadowed by withdrawals, with six pulling out of the squad this time around.

James McFadden and Alan Hutton both sustained injuries with Birmingham and Tottenham, respectively, and Rangers duo Steven Whittaker and Kevin Thomson were quickly added to the casualty list.

Kris Boyd and Steven Fletcher checked in at the national team's Cameron House base in Loch Lomond earlier in the week but also cried off with injuries.

That left just 18 fit players to make the trip to Prague, with Burley insisting the friendly was still a worthwhile exercise ahead of the World Cup qualifiers which begin in Macedonia in September.

In truth, this match had 'end of season' written all over it until a late flurry of action.

Around 1,800 Tartan Army travelled but the game clearly failed to capture the imagination of the locals and the AXA Arena was hardly bursting at the seams.

Burley handed a debut to West Brom midfielder James Morrison, while Motherwell pair Clarkson and Ross McCormack and Hearts defender Christophe Berra also earned first caps as second-half substitutes.

The home side could have opened the scoring early on when Rudi Skacel's cut-back found Sionko in front of goal, but the ball was cleared before he could pull the trigger and Jan Koller fired over.

A Gary Caldwell foul on Koller 30 yards out provided the Czechs with another opportunity to put Scotland under pressure but Tomas Galasek's free-kick was comfortably held by Craig Gordon.

The Scots managed a few ventures forward themselves but failed to put their hosts under too much pressure in the opening spell.

At the other end, a great cross from the right from Sionko set up Koller for the header but the towering striker was off-target again.

Scotland then failed in their attempts to win a penalty when Barry Robson claimed he was pushed by Marek Jankulovski, but Dutch referee Eric Braamhaar ignored the pleas.

The Czechs still looked more likely to snatch the opener and Gordon was called into action to block a thunderous long-ranger from Jan Polak. Jankulovski pounced on the rebound but rifled into the side netting to the relief of the visitors.

A Robson free-kick 25 yards out provided hope of a breakthrough for Scotland before the break but Chelsea's Petr Cech was untroubled in the Czech goal as the first half ended goalless.

The Czechs made five changes at half-time and one of the substitutes, David Jarolim, almost broke the deadlock soon after the restart.

Polak raced past the static Gary Naysmith before squaring to Jarolim at the back post with the gaping net at his mercy, but a last-gasp block from Paul Hartley kept the scoreline level.
Scotland's best chance followed when Miller slipped a pass through to

Morrison who looked set to mark his debut with a goal but the shot cannoned off the body of Cech.

Burley made his first change when stand-in skipper Stephen McManus made way for Christian Dailly to make his 67th appearance.

And the Rangers utility player could have done better seconds later when the Czechs took the lead with an hour gone. Sionko gathered Zdenek Pospech's pass on his chest before firing home from just a few yards out.

Morrison was replaced by Shaun Maloney, before Gavin Rae made way for Clarkson to earn his first cap.

Motherwell club-mate McCormack also made a first appearance but time was running out for the Scots.

The home nation netted again with 83 minutes on the clock when Kadlec, once linked with a move to Celtic, rifled low into the net before Scotland pulled a goal back two minutes later.

Naysmith was the provider and Clarkson celebrated his first international goal when he deftly switched from his right to his left foot and fired home past Cech.

Sionko then claimed his second of the night with a minute to go when he looped a shot over Gordon.

Richardinho,

Looked good until Dailly came on.
Why is it that Scotland always have to persevere with duds long after they've passed their sell-by date?
Hearing about players in their mid twenties being described as 'one for the future' is just ridiculous.

Brother Walfrid,

If you offered me £100 to watch this game I'd say shove it up your ass.

Minimum £25k to watch this match.
5

Novafone,

Ok we got humped, but I thought this was quite different to a Berti era humping ie we made chances and the team looked like it knew what it was trying to do.

They have some class players and we'd need to field a full strength team to get near them over 90 minutes. Thought the full backs did well though obviously Hutton would have provided more options going forward. Overall pass marks for most though how Caldwell continues to get a game I'm not sure. Must be because he plays alongside McManus (class act) week in week out.
6

Richardinho,

30/05/2008 19:03:58
Caldwell played well I thought, and was instrumental in passing the ball out of defence-as he does so well for Celtic. I know I'll be attacked by the bigots for saying this, but the turning point was Daily coming on for McManus.
7

nineinro,

30/05/2008 19:09:48
Got tae laugh at the game too far bhoys that would be on their knees if they had played 68 games this season ... Hartley would struggle tae get a game for Hamilton accies how many club games has he had and is it double figures! I thought that after a nervous 1st half Morrison looked okay and a nice finish by Clarkson wae the left peg !
8

jerrymanders,

Over the Hill 30/05/2008 19:35:36
Dailly. Aye, he's one for the future. Him and Weiry have years left in them if they give up International Fitba, like their younger team mates.

BEMUSED EXILE,

I'm always amazed at the ingenuity of posters with regard to their ability to turn almost any thread into an Old Firm argument. Cease and desist!

Watched the game on a little window on my laptop measuring about 4" wide by 3" high, so my apologies if I make any mistakes. I thought that this was a half-decent performance from Scotland, but it was a game played at a less-than-frenetic pace, with a real end-of-season feel to it.

I agree with Richardinho (won't happen often) on the age issue. George Burley should be looking ahead not only to the 2010 World Cup, but also the 2012 European Championships, and he should be assembling a squad that can develop together throughout that period. There is no point in Weir, Dailly, etc continuing to be selected. Their time at the top level is virtually up, and they will become passengers sooner rather than later. Players aged around 30, such as Anderson, Ferguson, Hartley and McCulloch should be the oldest players in the set-up.

I'd like to have seen the likes of Hutton, Brown and McFadden out there, just to see how tough we could have made it for opposition such as the Czech Republic, who are surely on a par with the Dutch, who we will lock horns with soon enough. The new lads did themselves no harm though, and the likes of Morrison, Clarkson and McCormack represent hope for the future, alongside the likes of Berra and Steven Fletcher.

All in all, I'm fairly optimistic about the coming campaign. We've given ourselves a tough opening double-header, but if we can succeed in those games, I would hope that we might build a momentum that would be good enough to ensure second place and maybe even represent a real challenge to Holland.

Keep the faith.

Just a wee joke there.

Aye, I support Rangers, but their call-offs are a disgrace. If you don't want to play for Scotland, fair enough. But a wee injury and you don't show up is not good enough, IMO.
16

Tim the liar straightener,

Never saw the game but by all accounts it was a poor performance.

No shame in losing to a good international side abroad but why oh why, do the SFA do this stuff.

The season has been a long grind, half the first team pulled out the other half are knackered or half fit - we go thousands of miles away to be fodder. Why?

Gordon Smith is really a joke.

He made a hash of the Burley announcement - making it a pointscoring exercise with his old media mates.

He made a hash of the interview process - forgetting to tell candidates how they fared.

He has done ZILCH to stamp out sectarianism - when he said he was going to.

He has done ZILCH to stamp out cheating - when he said he was going to.

He tried his hardest to get Rangers an easy run in without even considering all the other clubs including St J.

He defended the undefendable in Mike McCurry after the Rangers-Utd cheatfest. I don't see him running out to defend McCurry's integrity now that some character flaws have been exposed.

Now before anyone starts on me calling me a bigot, let me just say I wanted Smith in the job from the outset. Why did I want him? Simple he's a guy who has at least played the game and has business experience, has been involved at the coaching level and has wide media experience - his CV looked the part. But he has failed miserably and it is time he took a hike.

Chief Exec should be Adam Crozier or even myself.

That last line would be funny if Smith was not so pathetically poor.

Funny it is to hear English football reporters on Sky reporting on Rangers v Zenith...opening line "Losers Rangers...."

Then they report on Celtic winning the title again and they close with "meanwhile losers Rangers...."

Maybe we should re-name Rangers, Losers FC.

I think this would actually be better for Rangers than being called Rangers FC. As the name Rangers FC is mud in World football.

I ma sure looking forward to beating Losers FC next season. Should be good doing FOUR yes FOUR in a row.

#59 Aaaaaaaaaaah! thank-you.
Some of the other posts have mentioned that McNauaghton played OK(?), except for one of the goals. As far as Dailly goes, I just don't get it. I've been on about this for years, countries should treat their teams like clubs, you have a first team and then a squad for injuries etc, what is the point of having a squad player (thats what Dailly is at this point) who is of an age that there is a doubt whether he will play the next season (qualifiers). We know what he can do, play a young player to see what he can do. Simple.

George Burley stressed that he needs his best players back after he suffered his first defeat - to Czech Republic - as Scotland boss with a patchwork side.

"For any nation, you want your best players available and hopefully, come the World Cup qualifiers, we will have them," he said after the 3-1 defeat.

Sounds to me like Barry Ferguson, Alan Hutton, David Weir, Kris boyd, Kevin Thomson and Steven Whittaker were sorely missed and will step straight back into the team as soon as they are ready.
